Maribor, St Johnstone and resolving Murrayfield

565

Did you watch the European Super Cup from Cardiff last night?  Europa League champions Sevilla lost out to Real Madrid but the team from Andalucía got there after beating Maribor 4-3 on aggregate.  The Slovenian’s narrow defeat deserves some context: Sevilla also eliminated Real Betis, Porto, Valencia and Benfica.

Make no mistake, we’re up against a decent European team.  More on them later in the week.

Tonight it’s St Johnstone, who, like Celtic, have sharpened their wits with European football in recent weeks, and well as enjoying an opening day win in Dingwall at the weekend.  They have lost their talisman, Stevie May, which is a pity, as I would like to see the Celtic defence stretched as much as possible this week, but they will be as ready as any domestic opponent we could face at the moment.

Ronny Deila has two short games to sort out game plan, shape, partnerships and team spirit, before travelling to Slovenia.  It doesn’t need to be right for tonight, but signs of considerable progress on the Murrayfield debacle is needed.

The Kano Foundation are one of the greatest initiatives from any group of football fans I’ve heard about.  They bring the Celtic experience to childrens’ charities and groups, truly phenomenal work.  The Foundation was founded in the wake of the Bring Martin Home campaign, which brought our very own Kano home from life in a hospital bed.

You’ll see the volunteers outside Celtic Park before kick-off on Saturday with buckets, so make sure you bring something for them.

    quonno.No fella I didnt catch it. H.H.

Briefly. When PL took over in September 2003 we had just been to Seville, PA system was regularly proclaiming highest attendances in Britain. Also although I think it was spurious, Celtic was claiming a season ticket waiting list.

Today were are anyone of quality’s European punchbag, attendances are down, and Celtic are aggressively promoting the sale of season tickets.

So much so, that Fergus has been recruited to letter season ticket holders who have fallen by the wayside.

The above is not a matter of opinion, it is what has happened.

Here is another version of 1993/94.

Some folk like myself publicly supporting Fergus and being ridiculed for it by people like Michael ‘take the money and run’ Kelly and Gerry ‘the risible rebels’ McSherrie.

And don’t ever forget Celts for Change and folk like Brendan Sweeney. That was the real vision of 1994.

  6. SSN just reported that Celtic’s application to have a secured standing area inside the stadium have been denied.

Wee thought before I go for my tea.

In this day and age of the minimum wage and zero hours contracts, these hard done by whistlers are pocketing around £2.20 a minute for what is a part time job or even just a hobby.

Attitude over ability every time for me particularly when the ability is mediocre at best.

We need an alternative though, hope there is a Plan B in the background

I don’t think auld bertie was satirising or disrespecting the Celts for Change guys? That is not what I took.

It is not always right to rebel and it is not always right to obey the law. The circumstances will dictate to your conscience what is needed and what is not. Back then, our club was in danger of going out of existence. Just now, we are in danger of having a crap forward line. Hardly the same issue.

  11. Michael Portillo just got on my train at Stirling.

Please God he’s not our wild card striker signing.

Quonno. Ok would you accept that when Rangers died the MSM were forecasting Armageddon for Scottish football and as there biggest rival it was expected we would be hit hardest ? Now at this stage I would say Celtic are financialy secure and that is down to selling players for large profits and CL football. Now I will have to put my hard hat on when I say this most SPL Clubs have seen a rise in gates with the exception of Celtic now in my opinion a lot of that is to do with the lack of competion in the SPL.Now next season if and its a big if the Rangers are in the SPL the gates at paradise will increase again we also have had a bad period of recession so in my opinion taking these things into account our CEO is doing a fine job.H.H.

    JFH,

I’d say NL’s performances in the champions league added more money than player transfers I’d also say had he been allowed to build a team than money would have kept rolling in.

We’re all to Perth in the green. Looking forward to see what team and performance is. Shame about safe seating

  16. UEFA have a trending article on Maribor V Celtic, discussing the upcoming game on the first page of their website. Seems like done deal.

There are clearly groups and sub groups that post on here under various guises with relatively little consistency in their thought patterns….it can be called schizophrenia under some circumstances.

This blogosphere nonsense is all about opinion…….and just like a pooh tube….everyone has at least one.

JUST A FAN (I think) came closest when he asserted that most of us where in agreement with the principle of running a financially sound business that should be centred around the green thing in the middle called a football pitch.

What is at issue is to what degree and how this diktat should be applied to CFC by the current PLC board.

Capitalism demands that an economic enterprise is run to pursue “profit maximisation”…Which is just fine if you are a supermarket……..most of us shop for groceries on a price/quality like-for-like basis.

However CFC is not a franchise and means many different things to many different people but primarily it is the public face of our cultural identity and social aspirations or put simply:

When we are winning it gives us a sense of cultural pride and enhanced social standing in a society that struggles to accept us.

This trade off……..You give us FOOTBALL SUCCESS and subsequent feelings of higher worth in our society and we in return will give you our money to achieve that success is the emotional covenant we have with the badge and the Hoops.

Due to the current paradigm (business model) being enforced upon us by the current PLC there is a serious disconnect between us the supporters and the PLC board.

I have never once called for the removal of PL, the board, the incumbent manager, the tea person or anyone else for that matter but continually ask for a comprehensive review of the “profit maximisation” theory that is currently being practiced upon us by the PLC……if only we could click our posting history (Paul?)

See what I just did there?……..

Maribor?………Mmmmmm…..the proof is on that green thing in the middle called a football pitch which is what we are supposed to be about because it give us………..

    Remember?

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Neil canalamar. Im not an account so I dont know what brought in the most money but as far as I can tell money is still rolling in on top of season ticket monies since the start of the season a further 11.25 million from transfers. H.H.
