Maribor, St Johnstone and resolving Murrayfield

565

Did you watch the European Super Cup from Cardiff last night?  Europa League champions Sevilla lost out to Real Madrid but the team from Andalucía got there after beating Maribor 4-3 on aggregate.  The Slovenian’s narrow defeat deserves some context: Sevilla also eliminated Real Betis, Porto, Valencia and Benfica.

Make no mistake, we’re up against a decent European team.  More on them later in the week.

Tonight it’s St Johnstone, who, like Celtic, have sharpened their wits with European football in recent weeks, and well as enjoying an opening day win in Dingwall at the weekend.  They have lost their talisman, Stevie May, which is a pity, as I would like to see the Celtic defence stretched as much as possible this week, but they will be as ready as any domestic opponent we could face at the moment.

Ronny Deila has two short games to sort out game plan, shape, partnerships and team spirit, before travelling to Slovenia.  It doesn’t need to be right for tonight, but signs of considerable progress on the Murrayfield debacle is needed.

The Kano Foundation are one of the greatest initiatives from any group of football fans I’ve heard about.  They bring the Celtic experience to childrens’ charities and groups, truly phenomenal work.  The Foundation was founded in the wake of the Bring Martin Home campaign, which brought our very own Kano home from life in a hospital bed.

You’ll see the volunteers outside Celtic Park before kick-off on Saturday with buckets, so make sure you bring something for them.

You seem to deal in absolutes.

Based on your comments, I am clearly more willing to give the manager some breathing space than you. That makes “people like me” a board apologist.

I believe that RD has simply struggled to comprehend the magnitude of our club and this has been worsened by the clearly massive disparity between the football he seems to want to deliver, and the capabilities of the current playing staff to do so, not to mention their onfield reaction to the loss of NFL and the methods of RD.

If they’re such good players who’ve been playing well throughout the NFL era, why have their performances slumped?

I disagree with your assertion that because Celtic won the last 3 SPLs they are all good players. The nature of modern football means that if they were, we as a club would be fending off hostile bids for the services of far more than just FF and VVD.

I don’t think we agree on very much m8. You’re entitled to your view which is very black and white and absolute.

Supporting Celtic and worrying about the current situation means we need to deal in shades of grey. Or should that be green.

I have concerns about the manager but I’m prepared to look at the bigger picture and there being other factors involved.

IMO the performances of the playing staff leave a lot to be desired and their professionalism regarding personnel and tactical changes smacks of trying to get the manager the sack.

He needs to deal with this quick. It’s them or him and he needs supporting by his CEO, the board and us. I’m not sure he will get any.

Where do you find your league on the home page ?

    ___________

Once you have selected your team, go to the tab at that top that says ‘Leagues’ It will give you the option to join public & private leagues. Choose to join a private league and it will prompt you to input the code for the league.

Even within the current CL structure it is designed to help thealready super rich clubs

The likes of Bayern, Chelsea, Barca, etc all go into the group stages seeded in such a manner so as to facilitate their progress. Real Madrid for example know that the will not be drawn against other super rich clubs such as Chelsea, while the likes of Celtic know for a fact that they will

i dont understand why an unseeded team should have a harder route to the final, it effectively disallows teams like us from having a fair go at it, while facilitating the path towards the final stages for all the super rich teams

Look at how badly England performed at the WC when they didnt have the advantage of seeding to make sure that they only played against minnow countries. The CL cup would be far more entertaining if the super rich were able to be drawn against each other in the early stages

Even the method of calculating the co efficient is flawed, Why should Celtic have a lower co efficient because the likes of motherwell got beat? it doesnt even begin to make sense.

CL seeding is an evil and the CL rewards that get presented to the same super rich teams season after season are the prelude to the inevitable European super league.

I do agree that we need to give the young players a chance when the opportunity arises and that we haven’t taken advantage of that nearly enough. But I do have sympathy with the sentiment that you need to deserve your place. I think the guys you have mentioned have deserved their chances and to varying degrees have justified their inclusion. But there are plenty of players who given that step up wouldn’t make it right away, it may take a year or two under their belt, but they could end up better in the end than those who brake into the first team straight from the U19s.

    Tamrabam

    13:10

I don’t know how we would achieve it, but I’m sure there would be an opportunity or two in the coming years for a new team. But we have to get the agreement that a B-team would be allowed first. A Celtic B-team would certainly be more attractive to the Scottish game than most other options.

  8. Deila valuation of Denayer at £10m

It is worrying that the manager without ever having seen the guy play a single first team game, or even simply seen the whites of his eyes in competition. Yet our man values him at the same price as a guy who twice kept out Barcelona, and was arguably the best player at the club since Henrik, and a higher valuation than any of the players in the current side.

In other words, a player he’s never seen is somehow better than every player in the team despite having never played a competitive game in the professional leagues, ever.

I have no words except all those who were comparing him with our best manager ever have at least one thing in common with the new man at the helm.

  9. I would prefer the Europa League to the Champions League, but a defeat against Maribor would heap enormous pressure on Ronny.

  10. TamraBam, totally agree regarding CL seeding.

It’s a closed shop, design for TV audiences, not sporting competition.

But it is the structure we have to play in.

what I take that to mean is “he would cost 10m to buy from Man C”. That’s probably right – the big clubs can afford to pay, and charge, humungous sums for unproven, potential talent right now. How much was Shaw, ffs?

  13. Squire

Me personally, i think that the best players in our side HAVE been plundered for the last 3 seasons

I think I explained the basis for my thoughts about RD, and how/why that opinion will change based on his performance and i guess the basis for your support of RD is that the players spat the dummy and didnt try a leg to qualify. I do find that assertion hard to believe and quite baseless.

However if we all thought the same thing we would just read the Celtic View and be happy with everything that happens regardless.

We will have to agree to disagree, but thats the beauty of opinions. They can and do evolve depending on circumstances.

The EPL transfer their players for a fortune ..

CFC don`t have fortunes to compete

ergo…don`t look at EPL players …simple

this argument being run re the price of Long is a facile one insofar as CFC are concerned

another irrelevant excuse and no more relevant to the CFC squad than the fact that we cant afford Real Madrid players
