Maribor, St Johnstone and resolving Murrayfield

565

Did you watch the European Super Cup from Cardiff last night?  Europa League champions Sevilla lost out to Real Madrid but the team from Andalucía got there after beating Maribor 4-3 on aggregate.  The Slovenian’s narrow defeat deserves some context: Sevilla also eliminated Real Betis, Porto, Valencia and Benfica.

Make no mistake, we’re up against a decent European team.  More on them later in the week.

Tonight it’s St Johnstone, who, like Celtic, have sharpened their wits with European football in recent weeks, and well as enjoying an opening day win in Dingwall at the weekend.  They have lost their talisman, Stevie May, which is a pity, as I would like to see the Celtic defence stretched as much as possible this week, but they will be as ready as any domestic opponent we could face at the moment.

Ronny Deila has two short games to sort out game plan, shape, partnerships and team spirit, before travelling to Slovenia.  It doesn’t need to be right for tonight, but signs of considerable progress on the Murrayfield debacle is needed.

The Kano Foundation are one of the greatest initiatives from any group of football fans I’ve heard about.  They bring the Celtic experience to childrens’ charities and groups, truly phenomenal work.  The Foundation was founded in the wake of the Bring Martin Home campaign, which brought our very own Kano home from life in a hospital bed.

You’ll see the volunteers outside Celtic Park before kick-off on Saturday with buckets, so make sure you bring something for them.

    That’s not totally true mate.

The trickle down effect means we once lost out to the top half of the EPL on inbounds, then all of the EPL and then now the championship…

Our new bhoy is a sign of the reality for us. Take him on loan as the superrich Man City are building squads of obscene levels.

At the outgoings level little clubs like Hull or Swansea can flip a £30k a week salary at one of our goodyins and of they go.

I am pleased to hear VVD is staying. Excited about a potentially superior centre half partnership there forming this year. We’ll need it.

  2. Although the verdict should be academic, I do not like the delay for a decision to be announced. It is an open and shut case.

If UEFA are using the time to revisit the case details then we have a problem.

The sooner the decision the better.

So many people on here just don,t know their facts

Ambrose was at celtic for months before the Raith game

his debut was against St johnstone in the league cup and he played in midfield and was by far the best player on the park, the guy has real skill just loses concentration occasionally

this is the guy who was included in the champions league team of the week following his display away to Barcelona

As for Delia getting his formation and tactics correct no chance ,the guy is totally out of his depth

I’d hate to think we have lost Mr Z as a result of this. An absolute gentleman and I’ve no doubt is hurting.

I fear him coming back anyway now would prompt him to have to defend that sort of thing from some on the blog.

That’s the saddest part for me (and anyone losing their job as a result)

where did you hear VVD was staying? Delighted if that’s the case.

Bureaucracy trundles slowly. No appeal I have been involved in would allow for an instant get out of here response. They will be reflecting then deciding then communicating then preparing the optics of it and then releasing the message.

It’s the slow trundling noise of a behemoth institution in action.

Oh gawd….one of the copious amounts of material around Ronny’s interviews yesterday carried that statement. I’ll have a nosey

It’s totally relevant. The market for players is like the London housing market. Super Rich clubs are buying the top talent and parking them on the bench (buying flats for investment).

And the inflated prices are pushed down to the ranks below. Hooper was stretch for us to buy a few years back. A short few years later players like him Long, McCormack, Rhodes are out of the question.

Its a market with a limited product and there is a buy-sell chain linking them and us.

agreed. Mr Z is an asset to the blog, as was Edward Ursus. My scum comment only applies to the spokesman behind all the attacks on Celtic. Should have made that clearer.

Aye he is a good fella.

He knows those two lottery winners from Edinburgh. He has been on a few Scotland trips with them. One lives in the flats which back on to mine. They both drink in the Jambo pub up the road. Not sure what team they support but guess it will be Hibs. For some reason they all drink in a Jambo pub quite a few Tims too. One side of the boozer is quiet and boring the otherside is full of life and noise, much dancing and general madness.

You can guess which side the Jambo’s are on.

There is always a problem with the numpties of EUFA.

    It is known as EUFA.

  17. Im in the ‘kinda hope we put up a good fight but lose and go into the Europa League’ camp.

Strange that i ‘kinda’ want Celtic to lose this one

Just because I think it would be more beneficial to our develpment if we play in The Europa League instead

‘kinda’ like needing to crawl before you can walk

The Champions League could do more harm than good confidence wise ie to the players, to the manager…

This place would be horrible if we went out and got embarassed in th Group Phase… which is a distinct possiblity

    AND

Sure we ‘wouldnt get the money anyway’

    Sorry for the ‘inverted commas’

  18. Now that Neil Lennon is ex-Celtic and doing some meeja work

Is he going to be ex-Celtic in the meeja in the style of Nicholas, Provan or Burley

    or

    WGS or Tom Boyd ?

  19. Would anyone be surprised if UEFA came to a conclusion that meant the Celtic /Legia positions were reversed again?

  20. C’mon. Some bhoys seriously wanting the Hoops to lose?

    WTF is timdom coming to?

But I couldn’t care if it was 11 90 year olds playing in the Hoops I’d still want them to win every single game. Wanting and expectation are totally different though.

  22. Stuart Douglas on SSN asking for more money for refs. Apparently there has been a review carried out using other leagues in Europe and our refs should get paid more. No mention of performance related elements funny enough.

How about, if they make big enough mistakes, then they hand the cash back? :-)

  23. Not sure that the delay is bad news. If they allow the appeal then match arrangements for next round will have to be changed. You would imagine in that case they would act quickly to give all 4 teams involved a chance prepare properly. If they plan to refuse the appeal the later they give the verdict will shorten the time Legia have to appeal to higher Court. Anyways regardless of decision neither the Club or the Supporters should react or complain. Accept the decision and move on.

I guess our best case could be to qualify, come third and drop into the EL….

We get the money, hold our head high as a pot 4 finishing 3rd and potentially a wee run for confidence sake in the lesser cup.

At this moment of course and given what we’ve witnessed that looks a million miles away

Why bring MrZ into it, no one accused him of anything and better still, he quickly acknowledged his club were in the wrong.

You see the thing here is awe the ludge refs. ( of which there are many) are getting the angry mobs games at the weekend, and they can’t refuse them, that is the problem, unfortunately their bigot cheating comes with a price, GIRFU them.
