Mark Lawwell first recommendation to Celtic

338

Ange Postecoglou, by his own words, worked closely with Mark Lawwell during his time at City Football Group’s Yokohama F. Marinos and had a big influence in the appointment of our new Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment.

The tie goes deeper, though.  It was Mark Lawwell, who a year ago, told his closest contact at Celtic about an Australian he knew that was working in Japan and who would be a far better appointment than Eddie Howe.

The then incoming chief exec was understandably cautious about taking this recommendation, preferring to wait for Howe, a known entity.  When that line of pursuit was no longer open, the club took Mark Lawwell’s recommendation.  It was a radical decision and a huge risk, made at a time when two chief execs were in the building, with differing views.

The relationship between manager, head of scouting and chief exec can make or break a club.  They flourish whenever all three are working in sync.  On that basis, I’m encouraged by where we are ahead of the summer transfer window.

Uefa’s news yesterday, that Russian clubs will not participate in European football next season, confirmed that the cinch Scottish Premiership champions will gain automatic entry to the Champions League group stage.  We will talk more about what this means financially to the club at the appropriate time.  What you can be sure of is that a budget spreadsheet at Celtic Park has been updated, the recruitment team has been assembled and there is a clear sense of ambition at the club.

If Mark Lawwell’s player recommendations are half as good as his managerial suggestion, we can look forward to an interesting season.

Good idea , it would be great to hear then all going

    ‘ting-a-ling-a-ling’ .

Might even think of a song to go with it .

  2. When an advisory dies, or, is reported to be seriously ill, we should offer our condolences, or, good wishes, where appropriate. If some can’t/won’t do that, then silence is the decent thing.

I will never forget Walter Smith & Ally McCoist at Tommy’s funeral, and the occasions when Celtic management and players paid similar respect to Rangers figures on their passing. These are the standards we aspire to, unfortunately some are driven by other motivations.

JHB above at 6.00pm, I think the big difference is that Tommy Burns was a thoroughly decent person, as would be confirmed by anyone who knew him. Jimmy Bell was quite the reverse, I had the misfortune to meet the bigoted little so and so and I know many others who had similar experiences to me. He hated Celtic, all Celtic players, all Celtic supporters, the colour green…

You may be right that silence is the decent thing. Respect? That’s something else entirely.

Jimmy Bell was a sectarian bigot.

I take no pleasure in his death but a fact is a fact.

  6. Grew up in Jimmy Bell’s town.

A bigger bigot you wont meet.

He hated our primary school team cause we kept skelping the primary school hun teams.

    Benhar and Harthill…another bigotted villages.

  7. If Dermot Desmond happened to own a bus company and offered the free use of them to the Ibrox club, do you think they would accept? Do you think they would, for one moment, contemplate arriving at grounds up and down the country in a vehicle emblazoned with the name of the Celtic chairman?

Small gestures count. The cost of getting our own coaches is chump change for a club of our size.

At the Rangers game after Jimmy Johnstone’s passing, there was a minutes applause. Jimmy Bell was the only one of the collection of Rangers players and representatives who did not applaud. Even some of the Rangers players looked askance at him.

There is video of it out there somewhere, but I don’t have time just now to hunt it out.

DD made it clear publicly that managers had the final say on transfers

As such, each of our last few managers bought a few bad players. The rap sheet includes Rodgers, Deila , Mowbray and Strachan to an extent but i think O’Neil is mostly off the hook and Lennon is like the head of RBS corporate finance in 2007😎

  29. onenightinlisbon on

i’m not revelling in the death of Jimmy Bell. I just think honesty is the best policy when it comes to sectarian bigots, alive or dead.

  30. Mark Lawell is coming to Celtic after 9 1/2 years at senior roles in recruitment at the best resourced and possibly most professionally run football club in the world. He’s been in extremely important roles, and has been there for an age in football terms. He’s overseen recruitment for teams in England, USA, Australia, Japan and Uruguay. He has experience in every market in the world.

He already has an understanding of how Celtic function, he’ll know the executives, the structures and the strategy

More importantly he knows what Ange wants, he understands the sort of player he needs to play his particular sort of football. He has excellent knowledge of the Japanese market. He’s worked with him long enough already for the not to need to build a trusting relationship. Egos are unlikely to be an issue, a long and fruitful partnership hopefully

None of the above is wishful thinking. Its a very exciting appointment, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t see immediate results.
