Mark Lawwell first recommendation to Celtic

338

Ange Postecoglou, by his own words, worked closely with Mark Lawwell during his time at City Football Group’s Yokohama F. Marinos and had a big influence in the appointment of our new Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment.

The tie goes deeper, though.  It was Mark Lawwell, who a year ago, told his closest contact at Celtic about an Australian he knew that was working in Japan and who would be a far better appointment than Eddie Howe.

The then incoming chief exec was understandably cautious about taking this recommendation, preferring to wait for Howe, a known entity.  When that line of pursuit was no longer open, the club took Mark Lawwell’s recommendation.  It was a radical decision and a huge risk, made at a time when two chief execs were in the building, with differing views.

The relationship between manager, head of scouting and chief exec can make or break a club.  They flourish whenever all three are working in sync.  On that basis, I’m encouraged by where we are ahead of the summer transfer window.

Uefa’s news yesterday, that Russian clubs will not participate in European football next season, confirmed that the cinch Scottish Premiership champions will gain automatic entry to the Champions League group stage.  We will talk more about what this means financially to the club at the appropriate time.  What you can be sure of is that a budget spreadsheet at Celtic Park has been updated, the recruitment team has been assembled and there is a clear sense of ambition at the club.

If Mark Lawwell’s player recommendations are half as good as his managerial suggestion, we can look forward to an interesting season.

I feek we should play Villareal at Celtic Park as one of our pre-season warm-up games. I am sure they would attract a bigger crowd than some ` bigger` teams.

  4. I can just imagine the people sitting on the Committee that came up with this vital decision:

“One hundred and fourteen years after the legendary Victorian era cricketer’s last match – and more than a century after his death – he has had 685 runs, 67 wickets and two centuries wiped from the records books.

In a ruthless move the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack has decided that 10 of Grace’s matches were not at first-class level and as a result updated its records.”.

  5. Gutted for Thistle but really poor skill in that game. Nothing for Arbroath to fear, never mind St Johnsone

I am desperately hoping that CCV is with us next year.

Totally agree….. Its a good base to start from, if we could then add a left CB

and switch Starfelt to the right CB slot he might be less likely be as nervous as a kitten as he is at times.

  8. One of the most disappointing aspects of this great blog this past year has been the unprecedented criticism directed at ex Celt Ryan Christie from uninformed and biased posters on here. Ryan , wearing the number 10 strip for Bournemouth tonight and who did score a few crucial goals for us and Scotland, has answered the ignoramuses in the best way possible, on the pitch. As soon as a guy pulls on the hoops he gets massive credit from me and obviously not from unrepresentative ,overentitled and clannish celtic supporters.

Desmond also said that they interviewed 5 candidates every time they were looking for a new manager. We know that is lies.

    I wouldn’t believe a word he says

i’m not revelling in the death of Jimmy Bell. I just think honesty is the best policy when it comes to sectarian bigots, alive or dead.

    —-

I don’t see “honesty”, just an excuse to jibe.

What is the point in ‘putting the boot’ into someone who is dead? What in the name of God can anyone get out of it? I’m saddened to see a Celtic connection in all this, albeit tenuous.

Celtic will no doubt have a presence at the funeral. No doubt that will encourage more posts.

RTE doing loads of great all Ireland shows with no bias these days. I’m learning loads

I didn’t realise how supported NI were in 82 and 86 in Republic

  14. Don’t post much these days but have to agree with JF that the appointment of Mark Lawwell is suspect and smacks of the old bhoys network. Unfair on him potentially as he may have all the right credentials abut it just doesn’t sit right with me and reinforces my opposition to Desmond and the current board and the governance or lack of it on show. Celtic plc desperately needs reform. Thank God for Ange.

As am I – but would he turn down a four-year contract on double his wages from the EPL, or, Championship.? If that kind of offer was made, I would be amazed if he, or, anyone else would turn it down, CL, or, no, CL. It might never come round again.

    But our fingers remain crossed.

CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION on 3RD MAY 2022 6:52 PM

I remember an interview with our previous CEO who advised that he identified Ange as a very good prospect and he worked to have him put in place, why is he and his contribution being cancelled?

    ———-

Was thinking the same thing. Surprised no-one else made that observation.

I can’t wait for Dom Mckay’s reveal-all book to come out.

Until then, I trust Mark – a Celtic man I hear – will do his level best to equip Ange’s squad with what it needs.

I hate that the media is portraying Jimmy Bell as a good man,

a warm hearted man, a loving family man

The only image he ever showed was that of a hate infested

sectarican bigot who hated Celtic, Catholics, Irish and indeed

    even the sight of green
