Market for sportwashing could wane quickly

175

The long season comes to an end this week when the final international games, most of which are firmly in the meaningless category, or the Nations League, as Uefa prefer to call them.  Those in the Scotland squad, like Callum McGregor, have to make their way home from Armenia tonight.  There will hopefully be time for the captain to rest mind and limbs before he is recalled for preseason training.

It is a small mercy that we don’t have European qualifiers this summer, our Scotland players missing out on the World Cup is also welcome, although our Japanese contingent will be affected.

2022 could be the year Fifa is finally forced to pull back.  Confirmation of the corruption behind the decision to award the World Cup to Qatar did nothing to prevent the tournament going ahead as planned.  Instead, the world will watch the efforts of a tiny state hosting the world’s greatest sporting event (it is) in stadiums built and destined for obsolescence before the year is out.

The is also a strange calculus underway in the sportwashing sector.  Whatever the Saudi motivation for LIV Golf, it surely was not to put the human rights record of the kingdom front and centre of news broadcasts.  ‘You are blatantly trying to get us to ignore the thing we are all going to talk about.”

Google Trends show the word “Khashoggi” has rocketed since golfers gathered for the LIV tournament.  The market for sportwashing may be set to turn.

Notice how McCoist criticises fully every mistake by Callum or Greg but says nothing when Patterson and Gilmour mess up

    Yes it is very noticeable.

Unbelievably, Calum left on. He obviously hasn’t earned a rest.

  5. I maybe am repeating myself, but we got the Ireland v Scotland game on Hes goal via crome.

Aye, I noticed that masel, just like SFTB said, no crit of hun players.

Sure we won 4-1.but we were up against fourth rate players, the third rate Irish destroyed us at the weekend, no idea where that leaves us, but we are not in a good place with this coach, and to think many wanted him as our manager.

  7. The whole NT vibe under SC is shocking.

After a few glimmers of hope we are back to playing beer friendlies.

Too many EPL egos phoning it in.

Not trying a leg for teammates who aren’t literally in their league.

Plus you have the relegation fodder who are still in shellshock after a horrible season.

Sad to see a talent like BG being wasted playing a game / role that he is not ready for.

Armenia are ECh level at best — all effort but little class.

However we were so disjointed / disinterested at times they looked world beaters.

  8. The first goal showed exactly why Hanley should never wear an International strip again, look forward to seeing him play at Celtic Park in late July for Norwich though. Armenia got progressively worse as the game went on and as their numbers went down. Not sure where this competition even takes us but one thing is for sure our opponents are going nowhere. Fast

Checked various dictionaries, and you are absolutely correct.

I had trouble getting the Scotland v Armenia game last week. My PC kept blocking it, my iPad got it but was no listing.

    Came on about 20mins in

    Tonight, I could get nothing

I tried hesgoal.fun (for a laugh, geddit!) and it brought me to something else (with extra windows etc that you have to shut down).

Pressed on Scotland and got a listing of streams . Clicked the top one and got ‘weak_streams’ or something like that.

Great stream on IOS and Chrome

  12. Apologies for my tardy post.

Last Friday afternoon I was blessed to be in the company of some really special people.

A wee gathering at the ‘Shipbank’ in the Gallowgate, Glasgows East End had been proposed.

Initially there was DAVID66, the legend, BRRB, and the bigger legend, ‘BIG JIMMY.

Later, we were graced with the presence of THE LURKIN TIM (TLT) who had buried his Dad, Andy, the day before.

For me, it was brilliant to be in the company of Celtic minded people.

A few things though, BRRB, what den of iniquity are you gracing your presence with tonight?

    DAVID66.

Did I tell you the one about !! no more jokes a promise.

DAVID66, kidding aside, how is BIG JIMMY doing?

    I’m available if required.

Obviously wanted to keep the captain on🤔

I’m probably being childish but wtf wasn’t Callum the captain tonight. I’m just glad that he and all our other players can now get a break. Training resumes on the 27th of June, with the international players getting an extra week I hope.
