Marking referees at corners, take more risks at the back

404

I really like the way we split our central defenders either side of Craig Gordon’s box at a goal kick. It induces teams to press us higher than they otherwise would, which opens up the game and allows us to build a quick break, but we’ve not got it right yet.

With his central defenders wide on the wings 6 yards from the goal-line, Craig will pass to them, but increasingly opponents push two attackers wide to cover this option. This forces Craig to seek one of our fullbacks, both of whom take up positions on the wing, near the halfway line.

This play is not a good use of the ball as possession is often lost. Worse, it’s lost while the opposition have men forward.

The space in front of the 18 yard box is crucially important. One of both of our central mids need to be there – close enough to collect a short pass and move it on. Look out for this happening. You’ll see a reticence in Craig to play short passes in a dangerous area, and in Scott (and whoever else) to want the ball in this position.

It’s dangerous, but when it works it’s transformational. Our old pal, Unai Emery, has built an impressive managerial career on getting this specific play right (it doesn’t lie behind any of PSG’s current woes).

Marking referees at corners

Another standard play against Celtic in recent months has been clearly visible when we defend corner kicks. Several Premiership teams are putting a player right in Craig Gordon’s midriff. Even before the kick is taken, the keeper is shoved and obstructed.

Craig always makes this situation highly visible. Theirs is shouting and shoving back. Arms flay, indignation peaks. But still, referees must be checking their Facebook status.

We are now unrecognisably better at defending corner kicks than we were a year ago, but if the keeper is fouled and the ball delivered into his zone, there is real danger. Two officials are employed to watch this area of play, how do we make one of them pay attention?

Craig answered this question last night by buying a yellow card for a necessary protest; a small price to pay in order to wake a dozing official from his slumber. Maybe if, as well as marking opponents at corners, we put a man on the referee, who could point and shout when the incident first arises?

Ridiculous, I know, but it might actually be effective.

Craig Gordon has always been on a salaried contract at Celtic, but you are not far wrong in that his initial contract was heavily weighted to appearance bonus. In other words, fairly modest (by football standards) basic salary, augmented by hefty bonus when he played.

I too was not keen on him signing for us, based on my belief that he was finished, and like you, I admit to being wrong in that assessment.

I’m sure he will be in goal v Aberdeen next Wednesday.

  4. I touted Craig Gordon for us prior to his signing after I read a piece about his long slog back to fitness in one of the broadsheets. Understandably (given his serious injury problems), a few on CQN took the piss out of me. But that’s fine – empty vessels and all that… ;-)))

Should we sell him? Might as well – we won’t need a goalie for the rest of the season – just play The Griffalo…

It’s unlikely that any of the allies, on their own, would have defeated Nazi Germany.

In terms of human cost the USSR paid the highest price, by a long way.

Churchill’s primary concern about the rise of Hitler was that he thought Nazi Germany would be a threat to the British Empire.

Stalin signed a pact with Hitler because he thought that was in the best interests of the USSR at the time. Given that the pact allowed the USSR to buy time to build up its war economy he may have been right.

And Churchill handed the Poles to Stalin at the end of the war because he thought it was in the best interests of the UK at the time. I’m not sure was justification can be offered for that decision.

Fair comment. However, in business, companies like Ticketmaster spend millions setting up ticketing software that can be hired by any business as a simple plug-in.

If Celtic were to go about creating their own software package in-house, it would cost a fortune and would not make any sense financially or commercially. Ticketmaster have thousands of client businesses using their application. It makes sound business sense for Celtic FC to be one of them.

    Basically agree with your assessment.

Except Churchill at the end of the war had no power to hand anything to anybody.

    UK was totally sidelined.

“an extraordinary insult to the memory of those who fought and died for the defeat of fascism in the two years prior to the declaration of war , not by Roosevelt , but by Hitler , after the attack on Pearl Harbour. ”

For someone criticising others for a faulty memory of events, I find the above, at least, confusing, and, at worst ,misleading.

The US (along with much of Central American states) declared war on Germany (and Japan) on 8th December 1941. Germany(and Italy) did not declare war back on them until 11th December 1941, 3 days later and 4 days after Pearl Harbour.

Anyway declarations of war were just official states. During the course of WW2 we declared war on Iceland and The Faroes, and considered adding Ireland to the list.

Nazi Germany declared war on Egypt even though Egypt continued to declare neutrality and did not declare war back on them, even after being invaded by their army (or ours).

In essence, Churchill is deified for his WW2 contribution- but not deified by his contemporary voting constituency, who, after being fooled by the promises at the end of WW1, re homes fit for heroes (where Churchill sent the troops against many ex-servicemen in the TU movement in Glasgow), they were determined not to let a toff’s government betray them again. We managed to sneak in an NHS against his and their wishes (Churchill was an establishment member, albeit a maverick on the issue of doing business with Nazis, where he parted company with Chamberlain, The King and others) and they have been trying to roll back our gains since then.

The ingenue Truman had the Atomic bomb at his disposal against Stalin (the soviets made their first successful test in 1949) so he was hardly ball-stifled. It was, perhaps, considered politically insensitive though to bomb our “allies” so soon after the war.

    Good Morning All.

I was surprised to hear from Celtic by way of an e-mail that my oldest son was being offered a chance to buy a ticket for the “Glasgow Derby” game against yon team which is now known as Rangers in March.

The reason for my surprise is that said oldest son has enjoyed a season ticket at Celtic Park since he was able to get out of the cot and is now 22 years of age. However, this year, unlike last year, he gets a student discount on his season book. He has had a student discount before and last year he was registered at an American University and so couldn’t get the appropriate discount — so I kept his ticket at full price.

Anyway, this most recent e-mail is the first time that he has been encouraged to buy a ticket at £40 for one single match. Personally, I thought that his full adult ticket, which was discounted only because of his student status, entitled him to attend every home game of his choosing.

No such reminder was sent to him prior to the same club’s most recent toilet smashing visit and I am confused and bemused as to why he is being asked to fork out another £40 now?

Could it be because there is every possibility that the match concerned could be a title-winning afternoon?

I will make enquiries of the ticket office but wondered if anyone is aware of other students are being asked to make the same payment as the whole thing is most odd.

Lots of people going to Lisbon and I will make up an amended attendance list over the weekend.

Off the the Tommy Burns Supper tonight — should be a laugh.

On Churchill — the good people of Dundee booted Winston out of their town as MP — and for folk from Dundee not to like you, you have to be a cur!

Personally, I have only ever been a fan of one Churchill and that is the small village 8 miles west of Letterkenny where my father was born.

Part of the reason that I like the place, apart from sentimental and ancestry reasons, is because the village boasts one post office, one grocery shop, one take away ………………… and three pubs!

  22. Can we be sure that any account of any conflict is not slanted by whomever is writing the account,we cant, so an open mind is required always and what is written may not be the truth, that is why accuracy correcting distortions and lies at the time is so very important, we were never taught conflict or warfare history in my school life if we did it might have been more interesting than what we did get taught, suppose that was the curriculum of the time but who chooses that on behalf of the students?

Many more innocent civilians are caught up and suffer through wars at the hands of politicians who fail to solve conflicts and use military force, this includes those situations which are not even called wars.I suppose someone always thinks they are right the other wrong and will use their better kit to prove the point. Result human misery.
