Martin O’Neill, alongside several other Celtic managers, worked against an Oldco Rangers who had a finger on the scales. Between 1999 and 2011 over 50 players had second contracts which were hidden from HMRC, and in breach of football regulations, not submitted to the Scottish Football Association or Scottish Premier League.
Rangers did not pay Income Tax or National Insurance on these hidden contracts. The contracts were found when Ibrox was raided by City of London Police, and after a lengthy legal process, the Supreme Court ruled that Rangers were due back tax to HMRC which they could not pay. As a consequence, the club went into liquidation in 2012.
Newco Rangers were formed (as Sevco Scotland, they received permission to change their name to Rangers later that year) by football entrepreneur Charles Green, who saw the potential in harvesting revenue from thousands of fans without a club. He bought what was referred to in court as a ‘basket of assets’, including Ibrox Stadium, then applied for and received SFA associate membership.
Sevco Scotland’s application to join the SPL was rejected by 10 votes to one (Rangers supported their application, Kilmarnock abstained, all others voted against). They were subsequently accepted into the Scottish Football League, in the fourth tier of the professional pyramid.
I have spoken to several players who lost trophies to Oldco during that period and who are very aware their medal haul and win bonuses are lighter then they should be. Martin lost two league titles during his tenure as permanent manager, one on goal difference and one by a single point, both won by Rangers teams full of players with hidden contracts.
Celtic former players and managers are not alone. The fans endured difficult times. For you and me, that might feel like a long time ago, but the consequences of those times cannot be overstated. Nothing has been the same since, even Sunday’s game will bristle with the echo of that era. For Martin O’Neill, this is the first time he is up against Newco Rangers. I would not bet against him.

Ive had one ailment after another ( NOT serious) in recent months, but bad enough to keep me at home 24/7.
I hope that you and your family are all fit and healthy.
A Celtic VICTORY Today would be rather splendid.
HH.
Good morning all from Govanhill. Gerrintaethum Celtic!!!!
Any win will do Celtic, but if you can make it a big one that would great 👍🏻
It is a difficult one to call today, with both teams having had a mixed start to the season and both having changed managers in recent weeks. I’ve said along that our squad is not as bad as Brendan Rodgers made out, but neither do I think that our rivals are as bad as many of their fans and many on here believe. They pretty much outplayed us for most of the game at Ayebrokes early doors, but despite that they never had a shot on target. As always I’m optimistic, if we get a grip of the midfield, (not easy with Raskin in there) giving some protection to our defence, then we will create enough chances to win the game. Gotta take em though.
In Martin we trust…..3-1 to the Bhoys
If they set up to man mark Calmac, I hope we have a plan B.
Games against them in recent seasons have been relatively tame, at least since Morelos left. I have a feeling today it could get spicy. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a red card or two.
DIOMANDE will foul with impunity unless booked early. Watch for the sly elbows.
Good morning CQN.
Game day.
Bring it on.
Someone needs to reach the final.
Might as well be us.
Hope those attending stay safe and happy.
And, if I’m pushing it? Staying dry too.
This time last week I was rather anxious about today’s match. We had lost two on the bounce, had serious injuries to key players, had just sacrificed two youngsters purpose unknown, the players seemed detached from each other, the manager detached from the situation.
The primary concern actually was very short term: us gifting Danny Rohl the perfect start to his stint at R2ngers; Whoever wins today gets St Mirren in the final, currently 3 points off bottom spot in the league and long-odds 2nd favourites (7/1) in the final. I’d really rather not give their confidence and outlook a NOx boost.
Fast forward 7 days and here we are, a couple of hours before kick off. We canned our manager and his coaching team on Monday, brought in a long-retired interim manager on Tuesday who can’t name most of the squad, won a match comfortably on Wednesday, had a day off on Thursday, started work proper with the squad on Friday. The injuries remain but…
…I’m not anxious about this match at all.
How’s that then?
Oh me nerves.
Good to hear that Strachan’s in the loop, at least. Maybe this is their idea of improved communication!
Think we’ll go
………..Kasper……….
Auston……………Liam
Tony………………..Kieran
Arne… Calum
……………………..Nygren
Forrest……..……Tounekti
……………Kenny
Engels has to play double middy with CalMac overdue albeit at the expense of Hatate, Nygren to get forward for a goal threat.
Expect another weird affair between two very evenly matched sides, bizarre that it’s come to this.
More dig in midfield guaranteed along with a brilliant rambling pre match team talk for all the Civics.
Could be extra time and penalties massive day for the club.
Got mugged by six Halloween dwarfs, not Happy 😐
TBB
Me neither.
Sarrachi instead of KT
Martin O’Neill in the picture just
When do BR and JK get announced at Wolves?
BSR, Saracchi for KT,and I would start Maeda instead of Forrest
aipple
Or Norwich?
Saracchi did more than enough on Wed to ensure he should start today. He presses, he attacks, he crosses, he harrasses and has loads of energy.
If KT walks back into the team it is because of reputation alone, something which may sway MoN if he’s looking for players who have been over the course a 100 times before. We all know he is not playing anywhere near his best, Whether he can improve much on his current level is up for debate. Years of injuries has left him half the player he once was.
I would play the team which began on Wednesday. Then, if necessary bring on Maeda etc
KINGLUBO
One for Big Jimmy, what do you call a boomerang that doesn’t come back??
A stick. Boom Boom

Sarrachi can play RB.Has done it before.Crazy ,for me to lose that energy and enthusiasm.
Be a bit adventurous.Throw a spanner in there works. Why not?.
