Martin O’Neill’s words on Keane

320

Martin O’Neill trained as a lawyer before going into to football and then football management.  That legal training tells in some very precise word choices.  So on Sunday, when he was asked on Sky TV whether Roy Keane would be a suitable Celtic manager, his response was sure to lead to speculation.

Martin (of course) dodged the question.  Instead, he endorsing his former assistant’s ability as a manager, indicating his surprise so many clubs were missing out on Keane.

After a mercurial two years manager of Sunderland (summer, then winter) and two years with Ipswich in the lower reaches of the Championship, Keane has not been a manager in his own right for 10 years and 2 months.

Half of this time Roy was Martin’s assistant at Ireland.  For six months during that period, he was also assistant to Paul Lambert at Aston Villa, before a short spell, again with Martin, as assistant at Nottingham Forest.

We have been here before with media reports of Roy taking the Celtic job, before Ronny Deila’s appointment seven years ago.  Celtic were still shopping around then, as they are now, so it would be folly to make assumptions.

Anyway, back to Martin’s legal brain.  With all them smarts, our former manager surely knows it is Roy Keane’s intensity that has led to a reluctance of chief executives to give him the keys of the kingdom.  There are surely easier gigs than managing Roy Keane, although Martin achieved this part-time for five years.

Intensity: euphemism.

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,

The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,

The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,

    While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;

    But O heart! heart! heart!

O the bleeding drops of red,

Where on the deck my Captain lies,

    Fallen cold and dead.

    O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;

Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,

For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding,

    For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;

    Here Captain! dear father!

    This arm beneath your head!

It is some dream that on the deck,

    You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,

My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,

The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,

    From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;

Exult O shores, and ring O bells!

    But I with mournful tread,

Walk the deck my Captain lies,

    Fallen cold and dead.

  3. Almost certain Ajer won’t be here next season.

I think CM will be the next captain.

Personally I that’s too much pressure. Already so much expectation and hope resting on his shoulders. And I’ve not seen him grip a game or the team any more than CalMac does.

  5. What a coup it would be for the sheep if they can lure England’s attacking coach away from Garrath Southgate.

This is ambition, this is thinking outside the box

This should be a reality check to those on here who would state :- Celtic could never attract a coach from the England national team

It’s possible Broonie knows who’s coming in,and will have a bit part to play, he will get greater experience No2 at Aberdeen, than No 4 or 5 at Celtic.

  7. Broonies going down the Caesar route, he will be back at paradise as our manager some day.

The sacked Sheffield United guy Wilder was all the rage last week to get the Celtic manager job

The chairman is quoted on Sly Sports as saying he wanted £4m to resign and “why would we pay him nearly a years wages to resign”.

On that basis, I think over £4m a year for Mr Wilder may be a bit too expensive for our tastes.

    Absolutely

Nobody is suggesting we can get Pep or Klopp but for God’s sake a bit of imagination and enterprise.

Plenty on here with the “Scoddish Foodball is garbage” and “too wee too poor” Uriah Heep mentality

  10. Good luck Scott – Celtic was good for you & you were good for Celtic.

You always gave 100% and had very few bad games.

Your leadership was obvious and successful.

You are a big part of Celtic’s history.

I think you might return one day – I look forward to it.

Captain? You ALWAYS fulfilled that job description.

If i was CALMAC i would be off ……Celtic is in freefall . At his age he should go and get a wage his skill / talent deserves .

I hope its only one more season we suffer for the price off the mismanagement we witnessed this season .

I keep reading the board fell asleep at the wheel, Big Peter and his CO pilot Dermot efficiently and effortlessly steered the bus to their desired destination , OLD FIRM CENTRAL.

Unfortunately the fans were on the bus that crashed into the clyde.

  12. fast forward to October, Aberdeen winning the league cup with an inspired captains performance from broonie.

  13. in ither news,

long time since I actually browsed on the Celtic home page, dont know when it happened but the History section, and the past games is very good, some excellent images i might pull afew over.

I can see exactly why CalMac would want to go.

I think he’s had a poor season. That will likely reduce the attractiveness of potential suitors.

Big Yin , two possible reasons for his poor season ( by his own standards)

    Lack of rest .

lack of direction / coaching / shape / formations/ fitness levels ( WHOLE TEAM )

from our coaching / manager types 🤗

  17. Handsome Yin

    Agreed x2

We do seem to like flogging our key players to destruction don’t we?

Did it KT when he was still a teenager.

Done it to CalMac year on year.

I’d argue we also did it with our now-departing captain.

Playing well in this season’s sh💩tstorm???

Pretty much everyone has been dragged down.

I’d say only Ajer has managed to maintain a level similar to previous season(s)

  18. Good luck to our captain and legend Scott Brown.

I would suggest Broony on a year’s, reduced wages, contract would still be pulling in more than he would over 2 years with the sheep, which makes me think that Broony knows what is coming down the line.

  19. JAMESGANG

AJER will be a superstar for a manager who doesn’t expect him to dominate in the air unless “he’s coached” to defend better , oh and occasionally clear with his left rather on relying on having to lunge in with his right ….

    catchye later pal .

Ajer certainly looks comfortable coming out with the ball.

Not the quickest on the turn, so perhaps complement him with a wee snapping terrier like Soro?

  25. Sometghing of a shock with the news that Roy Keane is favourite for the hot seat bacon slicer or to be precise, the manager of Celtic football Club.

On the credit side Roy has worked under some of the top men in football, Alex ferguson, Brian Clough, Jack Charlton and Martin O’Neill and played with some of the best footballers in the World. He is highly decorated with his achievements as a football player with countless EPL titles and Champions League medals and with a mixture of success and failure as a club manager.

One thing for certain if Roy gets the job it will be under his conditions with his coaches and with regard to budgetry for transfers etc. probably the reason he refused the post on a previous occasion.

I can just see Keane and Gerrard locking horns on his first visit to Ibrox the atmosphere will be incendiary to put it mildly. Interesting times ahead.

Yip midfielder , although i thought he was a terrific right back .

Aberdeen fans on broonie 2 i know …

(THEM )… for years he’s been an arrogant twat playing to his audience deserves the attention ( agricultural tackles) he gets .

Today …(Them) wow !! Broonie and Fergie will dominate the midfield battles for a couple of seasons and Fergie will reap all of Broonies experience lol…….
