Martin O’Neill’s words on Keane

320

Martin O’Neill trained as a lawyer before going into to football and then football management.  That legal training tells in some very precise word choices.  So on Sunday, when he was asked on Sky TV whether Roy Keane would be a suitable Celtic manager, his response was sure to lead to speculation.

Martin (of course) dodged the question.  Instead, he endorsing his former assistant’s ability as a manager, indicating his surprise so many clubs were missing out on Keane.

After a mercurial two years manager of Sunderland (summer, then winter) and two years with Ipswich in the lower reaches of the Championship, Keane has not been a manager in his own right for 10 years and 2 months.

Half of this time Roy was Martin’s assistant at Ireland.  For six months during that period, he was also assistant to Paul Lambert at Aston Villa, before a short spell, again with Martin, as assistant at Nottingham Forest.

We have been here before with media reports of Roy taking the Celtic job, before Ronny Deila’s appointment seven years ago.  Celtic were still shopping around then, as they are now, so it would be folly to make assumptions.

Anyway, back to Martin’s legal brain.  With all them smarts, our former manager surely knows it is Roy Keane’s intensity that has led to a reluctance of chief executives to give him the keys of the kingdom.  There are surely easier gigs than managing Roy Keane, although Martin achieved this part-time for five years.

Intensity: euphemism.

“mixture of success and failure as a club manager” –

technically true, I suppose but there were more failures. A good debut season at Sunderland which went rather sour the following season and two disastrous seasons at Ipswich.

Other than the Irish connection, I really don’t see what Desmond sees in him – if the rumours are true, of course.

  2. Horrid defending from Elhamed to let Denmark take a 0-2 lead in Israel.

I thought he looked a good player when he first signed for us. Injuries and time out of the team may have really harmed his ability at the top level.

  3. Interesting to see the feigned indifference of the usual suspects to the great news that the Union Flag is to fly all your round. Fact is they are waving it as we speak. No longer having to wait for the Duke of York’s birthday, the disgraced Prince, or indeed that of the Earl of Wessex, the Idiot Prince, no, now every day is a flag day. A great day for freedom, free to hoist their own flag, if not perchance their own petard.

  4. Geebee 1978………..Must say I thought he was completely out of the picture for the Celtic managerial gig, of course that kind of news sells papers and is probably just that – newspaper talk.

  5. The Aberdeen fans I work with are delighted with the appointment of Scott Brown.

A positive forward thinking, modern coaching staff. A new start with backbone.

If they get the England attacking coach, compare them to ours .

Guys, wake up. We need change, modern change to suit the football of 2021 and beyond.

    HH.

  6. Good luck to Scotland tonight, we’ll need it. If there is one team which has scored fewer goals than Celtic in their last five matches it is Stevie Clarke’s.

    Time to start changing that.

  7. So won’t you, please, be my, be my baby

Be my little baby, my one and only baby

Say you’ll be my darlin’, be my, be my baby

Be my baby now, my one and only baby

    Wha oh oh oh

Maybe the club has deliberately leaked the Keane red-herring so that we’ll all be relieved and grateful when Kennedy is announced :)

  10. Squire Dannaher,

Having a go at people being realistic, will still not attract us a top manager.Better to have your pop at the ones shooting down some of the names linked with us.

  11. Surely the flag of the United Kingdom offers us Catholics much protection from the people who want to do us harm roaming the streets , em waving the same flag.

thats what someone wants to convince us.

  12. FLAGS FLYING

Ibrox & SNP cult are two sides of the same coin.

The Union Flag does not belong to Ibrox, or, their various legions….and the worst of those people are not representative of the UK. Nowhere in England & Wales are Catholics hated & attacked for their religion.

The Scottish flag does not belong to the SNP – they use it to cover their ‘blood & soil’ Nationalism & parade it in marches which rejoice in hatred of the English.

Two organisations in Scotland who’s historical practices encourage their followers to hate Catholics & the English, with ‘stolen’ flags as cover.

Sectarianism & racism – two sides of the same coin.

    where is Brora anyway?

    Sutherland….I think !

  14. And to make me even more unpopular, I wouldn’t mind Keane with a confident hands-on assistant alongside- Queiroz complimented and updated Ferguson at Man U.

He would have the press here sorted in 5 mins.

He would have the refs at least a little more self- aware or much, much worse for them.

I like he doesn’t comprimise with standards, so you can imagine him calling out the Scottish Game frequently and players would know there’s no slacking in training, personal life, games.

Maybe he needs a big club to work well. He was an unselfish Captain too.

Our board members are supposedly hotshot businessmen in other walks of life. If they ran their other businesses the way they have let PL and DD manage the decline of our club they would be bankrupt soon.

Of course for the purposes of this argument I am assuming they want our club to achieve its fullest potential without having to keep an eye on bringing the neighbours along.

So in answer to your comment, it’s my right to criticise what I see and assess as a bad appointment, and/or the processes leading to it.

It’s not my job to identify suitable candidates because I admit I do not know enough to do so. Our board maybe have that excuse also but they should be using wider recruitment tactics than EPL failures. I’m sure they use recruitment agencies for high-profile appointments in other business.

If we sell ourselves short then we definitely have no chance of an inspiring appointment. If we keep banging on that Scoddish Foodball Is crap we also give our custodians the excuse not to aim higher than failed EPL dross.

  16. I reckon Keane would personally ban idiot Scottish journos and call them out for hunnish-loaded questions.

Maybe just hire him for PR for giggles at him causing the msm to sh%t themselves frequently 🤣😂

22 minutes gone in Scotland game three shots all to Austria. Stunning stuff😯

Warming to the idea of Keane myself now.we def need a strong character, not another yes man.

  19. Over the piece Scott has been a great lad for us , sad day but clears the decks for the next adventure… I’m assuming Big Roy is a smokescreen (gulp)
