Martin O’Neill’s words on Keane

320

Martin O’Neill trained as a lawyer before going into to football and then football management.  That legal training tells in some very precise word choices.  So on Sunday, when he was asked on Sky TV whether Roy Keane would be a suitable Celtic manager, his response was sure to lead to speculation.

Martin (of course) dodged the question.  Instead, he endorsing his former assistant’s ability as a manager, indicating his surprise so many clubs were missing out on Keane.

After a mercurial two years manager of Sunderland (summer, then winter) and two years with Ipswich in the lower reaches of the Championship, Keane has not been a manager in his own right for 10 years and 2 months.

Half of this time Roy was Martin’s assistant at Ireland.  For six months during that period, he was also assistant to Paul Lambert at Aston Villa, before a short spell, again with Martin, as assistant at Nottingham Forest.

We have been here before with media reports of Roy taking the Celtic job, before Ronny Deila’s appointment seven years ago.  Celtic were still shopping around then, as they are now, so it would be folly to make assumptions.

Anyway, back to Martin’s legal brain.  With all them smarts, our former manager surely knows it is Roy Keane’s intensity that has led to a reluctance of chief executives to give him the keys of the kingdom.  There are surely easier gigs than managing Roy Keane, although Martin achieved this part-time for five years.

Intensity: euphemism.

  8. Only problem is she is as wide as she is tall.

Arse the size of a planet.

All her publicity photos taken from the shoulders up, the right wing loonies like JHB probably don’t even notice too busy worshiping.

  9. Just read a Cork-based article that says – “……..and club bosses believe the man (Keane) who saw his late-career move to Celtic cut-short by injuries would be a popular choice for fans.”

Obviously taken with a pinch of salt but if there’s any truth in it and the board even hint at the idea that Keane would be a “popular choice”, then “out of touch” doesn’t even begin to describe them….

  10. Fess 🤣😂

Think everyone’s potential daily restrictions has resulted in lots more online time and, therefore more traffic on sites and therefore more speculation. I accept i have no control on the next Celtic manager.

Potentially why with an election coming the online influence being ramped up by all sides.

Although whomever makes their decisions based on blog comments or twitter snapshots….not sure. Don’t think Celtic do either 🤣😂

  11. Pretty much the only thing Union Jack Ernie and I agree on consistently is the influence of our absentee landlord. If he does indeed appoint Keane it will be due to his relationship with him and his nationality, there are absolutely zero footballing reasons to appoint Keane.

As usual lacking in any ambition, imagination or plan for the future.

  12. Anyone been subject to ethnic cleansing so far today?

If you have please let me know, particularly if you are part of the 17%.

Would be good to know whether I should get the bunker started.

    Rule Brittania.

By the way how many generations does your family need to be in Scotland before you fall out of the 17%? I need to know to size the materials for the bunker. Much appreciated.

While i’m pleased and of course selfishly saddened for Scott Brown moving on, i wonder if he knows of the imminent arrival would be a step too far with regards to Keane and his brutish approach to players.

Who’d win a fight between Scott Brown and Roy Keane.

What you mean like being murdered in the street for not conforming to a particular view of what is deemed to be acceptable in Scoddland?

Maybe not today, perhaps in the last week or so.

    You must be very proud.

  15. Sorry to have strong opinions on Celtic, the season may not be over but the judgement it has been disastrous is not in doubt

I like Luca Connel he’s got talent and this criticism from the Irish 21 manager is entirely justified so many issues need addressed

“IT IS A FAIR THING TO SAY (CONNELL’S CAREER HAS TAKEN A BUMP). I KNOW LUCA FROM MY TIME AS UNDER-18 MANAGER AND HE’S A PLAYER WITH REALLY GOOD POTENTIAL. HE WAS ON THE CREST OF WAVE PLAYING FIRST-TEAM GAMES AT BOLTON, RIGHTLY ATTRACTING A LOT OF INTEREST.” CRAWFORD TOLD THE IRISH TIMES.

“HE WENT TO CELTIC AND HAD A COUPLE OF INJURIES. THEY WEREN’T PLAYING TOO MANY GAMES AT UNDER-21 LEVEL, INSTEAD ARRANGING IN-HOUSE MATCHES. AT HIS AGE, IT’S VITAL TO BE PLAYING COMPETITIVE GAMES, WHETHER THAT’S UNDER-23S WITH YOUR CLUB IN THE UK OR FIRST-TEAM GAMES OUT ON LOAN.

“IT’S HUGE BECAUSE YOU NEED TO BE CHALLENGED. HE MADE HIS DEBUT FOR QUEEN’S PARK ON SATURDAY AND THIS INTERNATIONAL ON FRIDAY WILL GET ANOTHER FEW MINUTES UNDER HIS BELT TO HELP FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON. I THINK WE’VE A LOT MORE TO SEE FROM LUCA.”

Luca has done the right thing by taking a short term loan to Queens Park.

The midfielder has dropped down the divisions and is now helping the club push for promotion. He was rewarded for that decision when a man of the match award in his first game for Queens Park won him a recall to the Irish setup.

Luca has so much potential but Neil Lennon had very little interest in developing the Irishman by bringing him into the first team. Some might say he’s not good enough but you have to remember, under Neil Lennon, Callum McGregor was nearly sold for pennies.

We need a manager who recognises young talent and can bring them on, not ones who keep trusting the same old players when things go wrong.

The reason, I believe many people who have genuine reservations about the snp and their goals is that when genuine questions or points are raised the response is;”you are a unionist” or referencing the feckin’ flag.

It’s insulting those you want to agree with you.

In life does that normally work?

  17. Just watched the highlights of the Scotland game (fell asleep during the first half last night). If the highlights are to be believed, and if Christie plays like he did then in the Euros, we might get a good transfer fee for him.

Not sure how many times I need to say this, but if you can find me an example where I defended the SNP then point it out and your assessment of me then may be correct and justified.

I have been calling out the liars and misinformation spreaders who sow division in our society and sadly many people are easily convinced. The ones who cut n paste from the Express every day and never stand up to any scrutiny, they are trolls and a stain on this site. If you think the tag of unionist does not apply to them please tell me what should.

  21. There is no direct correlation to being a Celtic supporter/Irish descent/Catholic and voting for the SNP.

And the same goes for voting for any other party/ideology.

Keeping tight lipped about who you’re voting used to be the done thing.

Anything else, whether you like it or not is campaigning. But it’s a Celtic blog so why every bloomin’ day.

  22. I’m not trolling I’m responding, very different. The one in particular who angers me is not a Celtic fan. He’s a political troll. His only reason to appear on this site is to sow division if you’re happy with that fair enough I’m not willing to accept the lies.

Not sure who would win a fight but I’d rather we made Scott Brown coach than Roy Keane.

That’s not to say I’d want Scott Brown or putting his name forward but it reflects how strongly I feel about us appointing Keane.

  27. Ziggydoc

That reply misses the point entirely, the Government was asked why the apparent difference in the management of covid breaches by clubs which the Government in Edinburgh got involded in, with Sturgeon saying she didnt expect Celtic or Aberdeen to be playing in the next 2 games, she got involved personally and named clubs involved, not so with Sevco now its up to the Police and football, she was utterly biased in her approach and outcomes.

  28. geebee1978 on 26th March 2021 11:22 am

I agree, Scott had no significant coaching/managing experience whereas Roy’s experience has not been good, as far as I am aware he has not been a success anywhere. So it’s difficult to determine who would be better.
