Martin’s bargaining position should be material

403

It is not the fact that Celtic are the only top-flight club not to have signed a player this transfer window that’s irking you most, it’s that the runway to this situation has been disruptive and our previous four windows were spectacularly poor. Whatever trust existed in the system was blown wide open last summer and we are all left wondering if it is possible to resurrect the success that worked so well under Ange Postecoglou.

If I’m being generous, I would suggest that caution is better than throwing the sums around we did over the last two years on players who were unable to get into the first team on a regular basis.

I am also consoled by the presence of Martin O’Neill. Whatever happened with Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham, Martin wanted the two in place and eventually got his way. He is not the world’s greatest transfer market operator, but he is smarter and more experienced than you or I. He knows what is needed for the challenge ahead and his bargaining position should be material.

If I am being less than generous, I would tell you that right now six-in-a-row looks like a 33% shot.

Six is a 33% job but no one at the club seems to care.

    Probably Brendan Rogers fault.

    Shambolic operation, who is responsible?

For now I’ll stick with what I wrote prior to the inevitable reappointment of Maloney and Fotheringham – O’Neill is not a stupid man. He knows what is needed to improve the squad. After delivering a double last season under extraordinary circumstances I do not think he would have signed on for another year if he thought he would be made to look a fool.

    Time will tell.

What was disastrous about the Engels trusty idah Mccowan window. Best window for years in terms of player contribution. And that was Brendan’s window

Crikey, onto the “in a row” stuff already! Remember how that worked out last time.

Why not have higher ambitions than old firm bragging rights? Push on for Champions League progression and domestic titles will arrive naturally.

    Interesting, Paul.

On what basis did you arrive at 33% ?

    BTW, your article is titled

“Martin’s bargaining position should be material”

    Genuine question …

    Bargaining position with who?

PS – for all this uncertainty?

Still brilliant to wake up every day as a Celtic fan

That’s a very poor %ile for the country’s richest club.

Only ineptitude by those in charge could cause this to be true.

Just imagine how many ‘spectacularly poor’ windows we’d have experienced if it wasn’t for Ange?

This one’s off to a flier, too. Wondering how Brendan will cop it for that?

    33 – the ubiquitous number.

  13. 33% is Pauls way of telling us not to expect any decent signings, they will be punts at best, mark my words, 100% a shambles and a complete dereliction of duty by the custodians, it’s just what we have come to expect.

  15. 33%….and with our financial clout….That obviously means that our whole footballing operation IS NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE…from the players…to the coaches…to the Manager…..and right up to those that run the club….why don’t you call the above out P67…..Our Club is a mess….and it’s been solely put in this mess by the men at the top..

  16. If I was MON…I would walk right now…:this board will get his reputation tarnished no end…

33% shot is both accurate and negligent. Desmond has become a material risk to the club. Nicholson and McKay needed bagged immediately. How much are they taking out the club every week for doing hee haw and taking us to this point?

    Pathetic and inexcusable.

Thank you for providing an alternative outlook to Paul’s 33%.

The basis of PP’s percentages is clear enough.

They do this stuff for a living.

“Stuff” being taking money from people who think they can predict future outcomes based on limited or incomplete information.

Doesn’t make them right or Paul wrong of course.

    The provenance of Paul’s 33%?

    … worth an airing IMHO

  26. In my opinion, if we are still talking about “bargaining position” between the manager and the club (?), then things are still not right. The manager and ‘the club’ should be what people refer to as ‘on the same page’.

In line with what ‘the blogger known…..’ has posted, if (as many of us believe) MON is a smart individual, the core ‘bargaining ‘ will already have been done, as part of his decision to take the post for the coming year.
