Darwin’s ‘survival of the fittest’ quote doesn’t actually mention the fittest:

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.”

Being able and prepared to rapidly abandon your ways to thrive in a new reality is a lesson many of us learn.

Ange Postecoglou changed his ways during last season, but not before he became a caricature of intransigence. Tottenham’s faults were not all his, but he owned this particular fragility.  Spurs because Darwinism in action.

Celtic seem to re-employ managers on a predictable loop. So he might be back. He’ll be a better manager for his EPL lessons.  I’d take him in a heartbeat.

By coincidence the SS Sir Walter Scott sailed on Loch Katrine on its 125th anniversary sailing, just two days ago on June 6th with a boat loaded with local school children, part of a three day steamboat festival on the famous loch.

You probably know more about the ship than me, but I was fascinated to find out that though built in Dumbarton trialled on the Firth of Clyde, was dismantled, and shipped first by barge and then by horse drawn cart to Loch Katrine where it was re-assembled as a permanent steam powered ship.

*Aye bult by William Denny and Brothers built Sir Walter Scott as a “knock-down” ship; that is, the steamer was assembled with bolts and nuts at Denny’s shipyard at Dumbarton on the River Leven in 1899, launched and undertook performance trials in the Firth of Clyde, including recording her speed on the measured mile. She was then dismantled, and the numbered pieces were transported by barge up Loch Lomond and overland by horse-drawn cart to Stronachlachar pier on Loch Katrine where the steamer was reassembled with permanent rivets and, in 1900, relaunched, the original cost was £4,269, which included a delivery charge of £2,028.

  9. Good Morning Celts – mild and verdant in the Chilterns…

    Burnley78 @ 7th June, 3:37 pm,

“…If you are happy then it is up to you. It is nothing to do with Lawwell or anything else folk feel bitter about. Simply how other folks who are not as blindsided by game playing see it….

Well surely the Lawwell’s are key here, the game players extraordinaire.

As you say, R2ngers won the 2020/21 title at a canter – this was definitely down to Peter, the squad that BR&CO Mk1 left, went on to win five concurrent trophies, only PL’s interference and abject failure in the transfer market (high value players like Ajeti, Barkas, Jullien etc) down graded the team to such an extent it got stuffed by mediocre R2ngers.

Peter left as CEO and Ange with initially Dominic McKay and then Michael Nicholson had to rebuild the team, spending more than they sold*, it was of course a major improvement.

Then Mark Lawwell was brought in under Ange and his recruitment, with a few notable exceptions, was not fit for purpose.

It got worse when Peter returned in January 2023 as Chairman…

If the squad is, as you suggest, weaker than the one Ange left the Lawwells were definitely key to this, BR&CO Mk2 lost any number of players from Ange’s squad and Mark’s signings – some left for personal reasons, some because Celtic business model says High Value Players will be sold but most were just not “Celtic Class”

POV: We have had to rebuild shortly after Ange’s rebuild directly due to decision making by the Lawwells’ be that strategic or recruitment.

Since the Lawwells have been sidelined, our recruitment has improved but we are still a work in progress directly due to their input.

Here’s the players that have come in since they were sidelined…

    McCowan

    Schmeichel

    Keiran Tierney

To me that is a vast improvement and remember, even though we had £70 mn + in the bank, that recruitment was done with no nett spend.

Hopefully we will see the squad get strengthened further this summer and the nightmare summer of ’23 recruitment can be put well behind us.

Brendan Rodgers signing a contract extension would be the icing on the cake.

    * The players they initially made money on were Edouard and Ajer who were brought in during BR&CO Mk1

** Remember Ange’s team had been run into the ground, the form on the 2023 run in was poor and BR&CO inherited a number of injured players notably CCV and AJ.

  11. Internet trolls are people who want to provoke and upset others online for their own amusement. Here’s how to spot the signs that someone is a troll, and how to handle them.

    What Are Internet Trolls?

If you’ve been on the internet for any period of time, you’ve likely run into a troll at some point. An internet troll is someone who makes intentionally inflammatory, rude, or upsetting statements online to elicit strong emotional responses in people or to steer the conversation off-topic. They can come in many forms. Most trolls do this for their own amusement, but other forms of trolling are done to push a specific agenda.

    https://static1.howtogeekimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/1-internet-troll.png?q=50&fit=crop&w=1140&h=&dpr=1.5

  12. https://static1.howtogeekimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/dont-feed-the-troll.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=1.5

The most classic adage regarding trolling is, “Don’t feed the trolls.” Trolls seek out emotional responses and find provocation amusing, so replying to them or attempting to debate them will only make them troll more. By ignoring a troll completely, they will likely become frustrated and go somewhere else on the internet.

You should try your best not to take anything trolls say seriously. No matter how poorly they behave, remember these people spend countless unproductive hours trying to make people mad. They’re not worth your time of day.

I suggest there are and bitter jealous folks who can’t accept Celtic has had 21 years of success apart from just 5 seasons since 2004.

4 of those were against financially doped opposition.

16 leagues in that time whilst managing a profitable business feels decent to me given the challenges faced.

To turn a trading profit whilst strengthening the squad dusting the Ange period was excellent. Even more so given our start point. Even many of tge less successful players acquired still turned a profit for us.

No we have none of that and a weakened pool. We also had a poorer H2 for 24/5 season than the one you speak of prior to Ange leaving. We won a treble that season. We didn’t this.

Burnley; but isn’t it good news that we got further in Europe than we’ve been in ages; and all with what you describe as a so-called weakened pool ?

It’s possible that the pool looks weaker, yet the players play in a ‘Brendan way’ that got us better results where we really need to see progress (ie Europe rather than just in Alba) – albeit except our alarming slumps against the currants and the dandies.

As for those thinking Ange is salivating at the thought of managing Scotland; what’re they smokin’ ?

From what I have heard there was never any chance of Greg staying.

I think we will miss him. His stability and dependability.

I really hope KT pulling out the Scotland squad due to injury is just precautionary and not a sign of what is to come.

I agree he’d likely do way better than Steve C.

Given Ange’s ambition, I just cant see the idea of sessions at Seamill winning out over something more exotic and high profile. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him in Italy or Spain next.
