Matt the impeccable

257

Our two compensations are that Matt O’Riley is behaving impeccably despite mounting speculation about his future and Celtic have him under contract for another three years.  The Sun’s assertion that Brighton have joined Southampton and Atalanta in the race to sign Matt raises the potential ticket price, should the player move.

Brighton have already paid €30m to Feyenoord for a midfielder this summer and gone higher still for a Newcastle winger.  If Celtic sell, they have two requirements: push the fee higher than what we got for Jota a year ago and ensure we have backfill before agreeing to the sale.

We still have 25 days of the window left, so I wouldn’t expect movement on Matt or a replacement soon.  This has nothing to do with any other business Celtic are looking at this month, although, the same transfer window rules apply.  Players under contract and in demand will seldom shift until late in the window, when the seller has extracted all possible interest.

    Ok, board apologist.

I don’t speak for you but I speak for many.

You can choose to be contrary. But if you had your way we’d settle for mediocrity, and most fans don’t want that.

  2. Kiev were a disgrace. No urgency whatsoever.10 mins to go,walking away from throw ins, free kicks,no closing down,no press.Second half, apart from breaks,no one in H.un half.We would have crucified that mob with that performance. They got roasted on the wings, but Kiev never cashed in.Looked knackered, that’s with no game at the weekend.Did no one tell them this mob are crap?.

Strange game . For a long spell in that first half Kiev looked capable of putting the tie out of sight but they looked knackered in the second half and were outmuscled by Sevco . Dessers is like a slightly better version of Vassel of Killie . more into wrestling than fitba .How that Kiev side put 9 past anybody is a mystery . Advantage huns now .

  4. Malone Bhoy,

So talking sense, instead of hysterical bollox,is being a” Board apologist”?.Come back at the end of August,we will talk again.

  5. WBC,

Their attitude was a total disgrace. You can be crap,no problem, but their casual, approach to a game this importance to them was unforgivable.

Do you not have friends of colleagues or other people that you know? Or do you not read or notice other people’s comments on here or take them on board?

You’re just making yourself look really ignorant.

  7. A game of very poor quality. Kyiv had most of the possession down their right wing and should have been ahead in the first half. They seemed to stop this in the second half and looked to have lost their energy. Next week could be a toss of the coin, which team turns up. Not one stand-out player on the field for me and not one player who would get into our team.

“Do you not have friends of colleagues or other people that you know? Or do you not read or notice other people’s comments on here or take them on board?”

Yes, yes, yes and yes are the answers.

But I don’t speak FOR them. I note their views and note that they agree with me on some issues and disagree on others. There is no other Celtic fan whose views are identical to mine and for whom I could guarantee to feel the same.

To think otherwise would definitely be ignorant but then I cannot tell people’s opinions from looking at their carpets. That is definitely an area where I am totally ignorant.

  9. No chance Kiev will win next week. I have never seen a team with less belief and less effort or endeavor.

I was astonished they even took the lead tbh.

It was the last thing I expected from a team from Ukraine. The opposite of the effort we saw from Donetsk.

It is frustrating as it gives that lot oxygen. It also gives Dessers another stay of execution with their fans which is a concern as he is not as bad as they seem to think in my view.

Salzburg don’t seem to hot either and given Lammers is the new star of Twente I doubt winning the next round is beyond them.

David Murray was never accused of settling for mediocrity. And that was when the gulf was nothing like it is today between top 5 leagues and us.

Who are you suggesting we buy ? Out of interest

  11. Why are the BBC consistently referring to these planned violent episodes as ‘Protests’ and ‘demonstrations’.

They are simply violent rampages by fascist and racist scum supported by moronic ignorant pond life.

  12. Whether or not Celtic receive an offer that meets our valuation for Matt O’Reilly, from the teams mentioned…would he consider going to mid-table obscurity for the chance of something better later…..am not convinced

I’m not suggesting we buy anyone. I never said we should just go out and splash the cash without thought, if you think that you must be thinking of someone else.

I don’t even think the wait on Bernardo was such a bad thing, Idah it looks potentially like they’re trying to push up the price to a ridiculous level more than us push down, and perhaps it’s time to move on, or at least call their bluff.

I would much prefer finances be invested in getting the best structure, processes and people in place behind the scenes. A structure that would allow for the club to be world class in areas that we can compete, as we’ll never be able to recruit ready made world class players. Leading analytics, scouting, sports science. The best coaches possible.

Of course we need players in, everyone knows we need a left back and a striker. That’s got to be a bare minimum.

I’m not averse to signing projects, I personally think we need to be aiming from moving away from the £1-3m projects to less quantity and more in the £5-7m range, supplemented by experience and players who are crowded out of top teams and so become available and with some love and the right environment will show their worth.

But it all comes down to really poor planning and squad management.

We have 6 centre backs, one has been completely written off, possibly even two, but even then it’s too many for any of them to get enough game time to develop, and it’s wasted wages.

Then we have the opposite at left back. I like Taylor, from day one I’ve said he’s a good solid option. Do I think he’s what we need if we want to progress in Europe? Absolutely not, but he rarely let’s us down. But to not have another option in there is ridiculous. If Anderson is rated the be should be getting some game time.

There’s a very real possibility we lose O’Riley and Hatate, if we do we’re in big trouble. Bernardo is good off the ball defensively, and may kick on/grow in confidence, but he so far has offered little going forward (taking out some big individual moments). O’Riley consistently posts the top key passes, xA, pressures and regains in the team. And jtr really looks like he’s matured and developed further and is starting to properly boss games. To replace how with equivalent quality would cost £30m+ so no matter who comes into replace it’s going to be a downgrade, at least in the short term.

Having one recognised striker at the club is unacceptable. In an ideal world you’d have 2 plus a talented prospect as Rodgers mentioned. Idah negotiations shouldn’t have prevented us he getting a development signing in. Someone that fits that category don’t move on the last day of the window.

The point is, its all poor squad management, we don’t operate like a modern and strategic club.

    MALONE BHOY @ 8:06 PM ~ 12:50 AM,

Excellent post, your comments are missed.

What a comprehensive synopsis of what is lacking in our Club in general yerms and recruitment specifically.

We were making a statement yesterday on an embarrassment of riches in our coffers that will be announced in the middle of September

Yet our Board and Executive are at a total loss how to best utilise and reinvest that capital.

We talk about a world class football club.

We have the support, capital, coaching expertise and huge potential infrastructure to make that happen, yet a Board and Executive twiddling their thumbs as they’re absolutely at a loss as how to take the forward steps needed.

Thanks again for the excellent posts.

  19. Good Morning all ,

I should have known better than sticking £20 on a kiev win , I thought it was easy money.

They looked a Poor team , or maybe jammy Sevco are just better than I hoped for.

    Disappointing all the same.
