Matthews master of discipline

1000

Few Celtic players have glided through four seasons with scarcely a critical comment directed his way but Adam Matthews can make this claim.  I didn’t expect him to make it as a first team player as a 19-year-old when he arrived from Cardiff City, but he so comprehensively made the position his own, you’ll struggle to name the two right backs at the club when Adam arrived………….?

The limiting factor in his Celtic career arrived in the form of a tall Swede.  Mikael Lustig has had plenty of injury problems but when fit, he’s first choice, with Adam playing backup.

Adam’s most memorable performance came against Barcelona in that game.  With Lustig at right back and Emilio Izaguirre unavailable, Adam was asked to play left back.  Tony Watt and Victor grabbed the headlines that night but Adam’s performance was remarkable.

He didn’t miss an angle all night, no matter how fast Barca pinged the ball, Adam was there.  We faced so many balls on the wing that night but the discipline in defence was remarkable.  He was clearly asked to give the Barca players space outside the box and drop to the 18 yard line, I remember yelling “Close him down” all night, but Neil Lennon had done his homework, the tactics were sound.  That game is recalled so often, for so many great reasons, but while the tactical discipline deployed was not as sexy as the goals or the atmosphere, it was genuinely world class.  We analyse games through different perspectives: when Celtic win like that all you hear about is the atmosphere, but if a German team had won that way, UK pundits would wax lyrical about their discipline.  Adam was a big part of that success, and if he goes to Sunderland, he’ll flourish.

Those two right backs were Mark Wilson and shampoo hero Cha Du-Ri, b.t.w.  But you knew that anyway, didn’t you?  If you can remember the left back we signed that summer you’re doing very well.  So many miss the target for every Adam Matthews.

Well done to Celtic, who have improved the look of two stadiums this week.

Hopefully Paul mc Mullen won’t be the last to be loaned out to the lower league.

RD wants to have a player pool and back up from our aspiring youths, I’m all for that, though it’s time the amount we had on our books was addressed.

The bhoys not ready for the step up would make good additions to teams like Hibs/St Mirren/QOS and such like.

Very easy to say it was a waste of men, machinery and material as like all amateur

historians you have the benefit of hindsight.

What would you have done in 1940-1944 to progress the war against the Nazis?

Invade France? Norway? Holland? – with what army?

Or would you have waited until the Red Army had perhaps lost the war in the East since we were doing nothing but targeted surgical strikes against limited targets in occupied Europe?

That decades before any such thing exists -if it even does exist today?

Total war was forced on us by the Nazis -they practised in Spain and set on with a will in Poland, Holland and France before launching the blitz on us!

As I say easy to criticise with the benefit of hindsight – more difficult to suggest alternatives that could actually have helped the war effort.

As for bombing civilians let’s not forget the Germans had plenty of anti aircraft defences that took a heavy toll on Bomber Command.

I remain in awe of these ordinary guys who night after night put themselves on the line – knowing what they were up against and yet were still prepared to go ahead.

I for one don’t know if I would have the courage to do what they did.

My dad lost one of his best friends over Germany – my dad always spoke highly of him and so I take offence at later day critics who fall for the old wishy washy nonsense that thinks that evil like Nazism could have been destroyed without getting our hands dirty. There is no nice way to win any war let alone a total war against a state like Nazi Germany!

    ———————-

RANGERS will continue their build up to the new season by visiting Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground next Friday.

Mark Warburton’s side have been back in training since last Saturday and are working towards the first competitive game of the season in the Petrofac Training Cup on July 25 at Easter Road.

The Light Blues will make the trip to London at the end of next week for a series of coaching sessions at the Tottenham Hotspur Training Centre.

Built on 77 acres and located on Hotspur Way, Enfield, the training complex is the home of the Club’s First Team and Academy and is recognised as one of the best in Europe.

The state-of-the-art facility includes a covered artificial pitch, world-class player preparation areas, pool and hydrotherapy complex, altitude room, large-scale gymnasium and a specialist sports rehabilitation suite.

All training will be strictly behind closed doors next Friday and fans should not travel. Supporters will be able to see the new-look Gers for the first time on July 21 as Warburton’s men welcome Burnley to Ibrox.

This one I just had to pass along!

This is for all you construction/engineer types

Here’s a construction technique that would be handy to know. Read the calculations below then click on the link at the bottom of the article to see this technique in action. It’s something to cheer up any engineer. It will put you in the picture and keep you up-to-date with the latest construction developments.

Below is a link to a short video of a Pakistani pile driving construction technique. Notice that the pile driving becomes effective when the extra man jumps on. Very finely tuned! The chant is also catchy.

Now, let’s analyze the Engineering here:

6 men x 180 lbs. = 1080 lbs. static force Jumping up and down will create a 3 times dynamic effect = 3240 lbs./jump = 1.6-ton thumps if the pile is tapered to 2 in. x 2 in., cross section at the tip = sq. in. So, dynamic press “Add a man” feature will increase to 950 psi, so buy the option!

Increase the chant and dynamic force goes up to 5 times to bring maximum pressure/thump to 1600 psi for a 7-man team.

Quite good, and it will penetrate hard clay and sandy soil but not hard rock!

We figure the foreman is the guy on the tambourine…you’ll probably watch this twice because you won’t want to believe your eyes the first time…

Thanks for that book tip. I see that the US version is 300 pages less than the original, has a different title ‘The Bombers and the Bombed: 1940 -1945’.

Re-writing history books includes ‘commercial’ censorship I’m afraid (or whatever other reasons the US publishers give).

My Dad flew in Bomber command in WW2. He survived.

    Croppybhoy

I hear your words about fallen friends. My Dad never spoke about the business of war – ever. He spoke of the Canadian crew that he was with in Halifax Bombers and that friendship was all he mentioned.

No such thing as a winnable war though. Each and every war is easily tracked back to a previously “resolved” situation and a “victorious” war. Try that theory with any war you want.

    Hope you are well.

Well said, i had an uncle who was a tail gunner in a Lancaster bomber,

guaranteed to die and he did over France in 1943.

Just young men who did as they were told to try and stop the Nazis,

    war is shit, a fact.

My father fought with Montie, he came home after Monte Casino,

wounded and survived but died in 1958 so hardly knew him.

Thought I’d share a wee medical problem with my Hoop friends on here just in case anyone has similar symtoms, and like me tend to ignore them and hope they go away.

Been having pains in left arm and pain in left side of chest since I left Bulgaria to come down to Turkey. I plucked up the courage to go into Marmaris hospital today and have a ECG.

Diagnosed with Angina and have a bucket load of pills now from the pharmacy to try to get it under control.

I,ve just turned 60 and it,s the first problem health wise I’ve ever had.

The reason I,m posting this is I know there is a lot of guys who like myself tend not to go to GP,s for help etc etc and I don’t look for sympathy from fellow members, I just want to share how easy these things come upon us as we get older.

So if anyone has similar worry’s get down and get a checkup.
