MATTHEWS PRAISES HOOPS DOUBLE-ACT

ADAM MATTHEWS, who joined Sunderland in a £2million deal earlier this month, has praised his former Celtic team-mates Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong.

The Welsh international right-back admitted he was very impressed by the new Bhoys after they arrived from Dundee United in a £2million double deal on the last day of the January transfer window.

Matthews doesn’t see any problems with the pair adjusting from the Europa competition to the challenge of the Champions League, should the Hoops qualify.
The pair were involved in the epic ties against Inter Milan where Ronny Deila’s men unluckily lost 4-3 on aggregate and weren’t helped by Virgil van Dijk’s ridiculous sending-off in the first-half in the San Siro encounter.

Matthews said: “I thought Gary and Stuart dealt with both matches brilliantly, to be honest. You would have thought they were European veterans with dozens of games at that level behind them.

“They have done brilliantly since they have joined Celtic and playing against Inter Milan in Italy gave them invaluable experience of playing at a higher level in Europe.”
