May deadline is time to get off the pot

246

There is a striking symmetry in the English Premier League.  None of the 10 clubs in the top half has an English manager, whereas only two clubs in the bottom half of the table have non-English managers.  For all its apparent self-importance, the English game is keen to learn from Europe.

The likes of Sam Allardyce, Steve Bruce and Roy Hodgson are still getting a gig, although I cannot understand why.  Graham Potter took over at Premiership Brighton two years ago and has kept them there since.  Sean Dyche also keeps Burnley away from the trapdoor.

The England national team has a native manager, although one who took over at top flight Middlesbrough before changing their status to a Championship club., his only prior managerial experience.  The top English manager today is sitting at home on the south coast waiting for his next appointment.

News leaked that Eddie Howe spoke to Celtic four weeks ago.  A week later his agent sent out the clarion call to prospective employers.  Newcastle, Southampton and Crystal Palace will all remain in the top flight and could replace their manager, Everton, who Howe supports, may lose Carlo Ancelotti, despite his £12m salary.

You know the script, players, agents and even managers talk-the-talk but if they have a pen in their hand and are about to sign your contract when get a text message from a club paying £12m-a-year, they will want to check a few details over.

I know the managerial appointment is taking longer than Celtic wanted.  “The clock is ticking” for a club with enormous rebuilding plans ahead.  A desire to make the right appointment will soon conflict with a desire to make the appointment at a time that allows the new manager to make a success of the job.

The month of May is a hard deadline, candidates have been told it’s time to get off the pot.  No deal is done, but there will hopefully not be long to wait.

Can you break down the 40m “shot in the arm from cL qualification please.

Any strengthening they do will be with the large debts they’ll be saddled with and the huge losses from this year taken into consideration.

They’ve also committed to selling 1 or 2 players for profits. Replacing your best players while strengthening your squad isn’t easy.

I don’t care where they come from as long as they’re good. Scottish players have served us well throughout our history and we had them in abundance during our recent 9 in a row.

Agree that replacing your best players while trying to strengthen is not easy. My argument is that Ibrox will not sell any of their best players anytime soon. They have survived with c£100m losses over the last ten years due to the issue of ‘confetti shares’ & soft loans to willing private investors & are at the moment debt-free of any institution. It seems to me that those who have underwritten them through the last ten fruitless years are not going to be looking for a quick cash-in now that two titles and two CL groups qualifications are are real possibility. At last they have a feasible roadmap that they believe will restore them to their rightful place at the top of Scottish football – they will not discard this lightly.

See these dogs in the street, are they under the impression that Commons was born in Scotland?

  9. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

BBC Scotland reporting on the upcoming election would certainly not indicate that they were pro-independence, and certainly not pro-SNP.

Enough with the politics though. I wonder about the wisdom of Paul’s article and about the placed story by McGowan in the Mail today (also parroted on CQN) about Howe being ‘nearly there’.

Assuming, as many will, that the sources of the Mail and CQN articles are one and the same – i.e., Pedro The Magnificent – then is this not a counterproductive thing to be putting out in public?

In essence, it seems like a cack-handed attempt to pressure a prospective new manager into making a decision. But, if that’s the intention – then it doesn’t make any sense. Any blatant attempt like this would be more likely to hinder progress (any candidates wouldn’t appreciate public pressure like this).

It looks very strange to me.

Unless there is something more Machiavellian at play – perhaps the aim is to precipitate a negative response from Howe? Why, I’m not sure – maybe gives Pedro the opportunity to say we did our best, but Howe didn’t want to come? Haggling over his backroom team – could that be a similar ploy? Why he would want to do that, I don’t know.

Something just seems not quite right about that story coming out from multiple sources at the same time via routes that have often led back to Pedro.

Terrible how suspicious I’ve become about motives recently!

Here’s hoping the SNP get a super majority.

Then they’ll be able to re-enact their Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act.

They still think it was the right thing to do. They never wanted to repeal it and were only forced to so by the opposition parties.

Once they have a super majority they’ll be able to do what they want.

1st May,could be a finishing point for Howe to end gardening leave, collect any bonuses due ,without any penalties. If the ST renewals are from Monday, a statement of intent, and some kind of plan must be alongside, at the present time, gone are the days where season tickets sell themselves.

  13. My understanding of Celtic Shareholding ( and not disputing any of what St Stivs has already printed n significant shareholding)

    Celtic have over 28000 shareholders

Of which around 1200 shareholders use their right to vote at AGM’s

That means around 27000 shareholders are Not voting

All these missing votes then go to Celtic Chairman to cast at any meeting on their behalf.

    So

Small shareholders outwith those mentioned by St Stivs, hold around 26% in total of Celtic Shares

It may be safe to Estimate that at least 85% of this 26% total are Not voting ?

There is over 16,000 shareholders with 500 shares or over, equivalent to around 22% of the total shares held in Celtic

We need the first no a way to engage these shareholder leers into utilising their votes

PS – worth remembering, that this equates to shares with voting rights

There is a difference in the 3 types of shares held

    Preference, Ordinary & ??? ( cant remember 3rd name)

Only 1 type of shares have voting rights

CEO Stewart Robertson: “We know for the business model of the club we need to start moving one or two players a year.

“It won’t be a big turnover in the squad but that is something we need to do and something we’re really focused on for the summer.” Next debate who can they sell and for how much.

“& are at the moment debt-free of any institution.”

Are you sure about that? What about the biggest institution in the country? Or other football clubs? Issuing shares for cash does not prove they are debt free, it just shows they can’t get their hands on cash to pay the wages. There might be all manner of nasties conveniently hidden by the covid crisis.

  15. Norrie, that was really interesting and well put together.

Is it apathy that makes a Shareholder not vote, is it lack of interest, is it not knowing the processes or the entitlement.

I dare to say it, but for many might it be they are happy enough just to be led by the PLC guys.

Turnbull will likely get a call up when rest and recuperation is probably in his best interests.

On that note, had Forrest been called up? He shouldn’t play at all for the rest of the season with the sole intention of being 100% fit for when pre-season training resumes.

    ————

There indeed might be and we would hope that it has a negative effect – but we don’t know.

What we do know is that being an unlisted company there are many things that they can do ‘under the radar’. Let’s face it they have been very ‘creative’ in handling c£100m losses and still building a management team & squad to lift the title….although as I’ve said before, our players and management downing tools was obviously a great help.

You quote Robertson – when have we ever believed anything that comes out of Ibrox?

Their message always changes to suit any given situation – e.g. here we have a club with a history of sectarianism in their employment policy & in the stands at their matches – a club fined by UEFA for sectarian chanting by their supporters, now lecturing the population of Scotland on racism after a recent incident in a UEFA Europa League tie – you just couldn’t make it up.

If I was running the Ibrox show knowing that Celtic were in a bit of disarray & with the prospect of two consecutive titles & CL qualifications a real possibility – I would look to extend the ‘creativity’ a bit longer….wouldn’t you?

  19. I cannot see that it will be Howe. He’s not in a job. He could be named without naming his team if they are in jobs. We have a team rebuild and European Qualifying to commence. I reckon with 4 loanees, Brown, Elhammed and Frimpong then we have a number of players to get rid. the total of new players need to be as high as 15.

We are told that Coaching team have the final say in signing players after scouting and Commercial have done their parts. its also suggested that coaching is involved after scouting and actually watch the player live before any signing talks.

I think the only logical excuse for the delay in naming the new set up is that the choice is in a job at present

  25. “There indeed might be and we would hope that it has a negative effect – but we don’t know.”

We don’t. So nobody can say they are debt free of any institution. (Except for other football clubs which you have conveniently ignored). We could have made an educated guess if we could see the interim accounts but they haven’t published them again. They’ve delisted from AIM so their operation can be so opaque that supporters can make empty boasts about being debt free while not having any understanding of how meaningless it is. They made a loss of over 17m in a year where they played 12 games in front of full houses paying full whack. What is this year going to look like? Do you think the directors are covering twice that much? On top of the shortfall they already admitted to for the year? What about the 20 odd million they were going to need for next season, are they going to carry on throwing their money in the fire while the club spends the champions league cash?

“You quote Robertson – when have we ever believed anything that comes out of Ibrox?”

He said it to the shareholders at the AGM. Profit from player trading is one of the “four pillars” of their business model. Unless they’ve been lieing about that as well

So the extra 80m over the next two seasons that’s going to see them overtake us, put them back where they belong, and make them worth more than us, how does that break down?

  26. BIGBHOY on 28TH APRIL 2021 2:58 PM

Iirc they didn’t qualify. But if they did it’s a short term loan which needs to be repaid in a year or so, it’s not long term funding.

And it would mean they’d be in debt to an institution so it can’t be true

  27. They’re so debt free they were one of very few ‘big’ clubs that couldn’t/didn’t offer their supporters a refund, for lost games due to Covid 19, last season.

Maybe they could have had another share issue?
