May deadline is time to get off the pot

246

There is a striking symmetry in the English Premier League.  None of the 10 clubs in the top half has an English manager, whereas only two clubs in the bottom half of the table have non-English managers.  For all its apparent self-importance, the English game is keen to learn from Europe.

The likes of Sam Allardyce, Steve Bruce and Roy Hodgson are still getting a gig, although I cannot understand why.  Graham Potter took over at Premiership Brighton two years ago and has kept them there since.  Sean Dyche also keeps Burnley away from the trapdoor.

The England national team has a native manager, although one who took over at top flight Middlesbrough before changing their status to a Championship club., his only prior managerial experience.  The top English manager today is sitting at home on the south coast waiting for his next appointment.

News leaked that Eddie Howe spoke to Celtic four weeks ago.  A week later his agent sent out the clarion call to prospective employers.  Newcastle, Southampton and Crystal Palace will all remain in the top flight and could replace their manager, Everton, who Howe supports, may lose Carlo Ancelotti, despite his £12m salary.

You know the script, players, agents and even managers talk-the-talk but if they have a pen in their hand and are about to sign your contract when get a text message from a club paying £12m-a-year, they will want to check a few details over.

I know the managerial appointment is taking longer than Celtic wanted.  “The clock is ticking” for a club with enormous rebuilding plans ahead.  A desire to make the right appointment will soon conflict with a desire to make the appointment at a time that allows the new manager to make a success of the job.

The month of May is a hard deadline, candidates have been told it’s time to get off the pot.  No deal is done, but there will hopefully not be long to wait.

  3. Have Celtic said anything to suggest that there has been any contact whatsoever with Howe?

The media have said plenty, Howe’s agent has said something, but the media and football agents have their own agendas and aren’t always trustworthy.

    So have Celtic said anything?

  4. CELTIC MAC

100% correct. You can just imagine how buzzing the Celtic dressing room was before every game with players of that calibre and passion.

Celtic MUST have said something. Otherwise, we would not have had such a plethora of posters commenting on his impending/delayed arrival………..would we?

  7. £40m next season & the season after from CL money may not solve all of Ibrox’s problems, however the point that I have been trying to make is that it will offer encouragement to those with ‘deep-pockets’ who have been bailing them out for years, to continue to do so.

    1) If they can qualify in July/August for 21/22 CL groups, that extra income may allow them to keep their current squad intact, possibly even add to it.

    2) That would mean that they would be favourites for next season’s title with Celtic’s current position being so unclear.

    3) Winning that title would get them automatic entry into 22/23 CL groups – again extra income.

I don’t know what their current financial position is – no one outside the inner sanctum of Ibrox does. However a £80m ‘windfall’ over two years is better than they have ever had.

They have kept ‘the show on the road’ despite substantial & repeated yearly losses – how they are doing it is anybody’s guess.

So common sense says they are unlikely to be weaker going forward. The task Celtic face is clear – sort out our own house and have a squad able to challenge and win next season.

Right now we have no manager, no DoF and a crumbling and seemingly unmotivated squad that needs dismantling & rebuilding.

This is a big challenge that requires a big response from Celtic – a response similar to the start of the Martin O’Neil era is required.

  8. JHB on 29TH APRIL 2021 9:45 AM

As far as I can see, how much money that comes into Ibrox will not make any difference to their spending. They spend regardless of whether or not they have the money.

  9. I have not heard one official ‘peep’ out of Celtic Park on Eddie Howe, or, any indeed any other contender for the manager’s job.

    What does that mean?

It means that at the moment there is nothing completely agreed and therefore nothing to say – that seems clear to me. Whether we like this position, or, not, is a different matter.

  10. I see Paul67 has run with the JK for DoF story on Twitter.

I have nothing against Kennedy but there seems to be a desire to keep him at the club at all costs. After talk of Manchester City “transfer gurus” and Juventus scouts being linked with the DoF role, I wonder what DD sees in Kennedy that makes him think he’s perfect for this role.

  11. JHB

Why do you keep going on about “What ifs”.If the Huns qualify for the CL.Thats one almighty big “If”.We know from past experience, how hard it is,and at the time,we had a much better team than the Huns will be going with.Utter nonsense. You never seem as optimistic, when talking about our future. When its us,its all doom and gloom.

  12. Why are some on here more concerned about Sevco regarding how much money they will earn in the Champions League,we should be concerned about especially John Kennedy rumours about him being appointed as The Sporting Director?whatever that is ,personally he along with Lennon being responsible for our decline this season,he and a few players need to be shown the door, simple as.

    ———–

Yes they do, and as far as we know it is all underwritten by repeated share issues – is that the whole story? No one knows.

The chance of getting their hands on £80m CL money will embolden them further…..won’t it?

  14. Again, some people getting hot under the collar, that JK,might be up for the DOF position. Why?Not confirmed.Even if it does get confirmed ,why the whinge. Can anyone be sure that Harkin,or Hughes, would be the best man for the job?,or any other name cropping up.I have said before, people in the know, with much better knowledge of JK,rate him very highly eg,WGS,Damien Duff, and players that have worked with him.Why would you, with the little knowledge you have about him, have a better idea, than these people.

Not saying to hire him,but the little I know about JK,is a lot more than I know about the other candidates. In the end, every appointment is a gamble.

Why are some on here more concerned about Sevco regarding how much money they will earn in the Champions League.

    ———–

Simply because we are basically in a two-horse race in Scotland. If they are getting CL money, it probably means we are not.

If Ibrox can beat us when loss-making for ten years, what will they be capable of with the prospect of real money coming in?

The size of our task and response is directly affected by how strong our opposition will be – surely you appreciate that.

I am sure it will be in the forefront of the minds of all at Celtic Park.

  16. TURKEYBHOY

They other guys have been doing that role for years.

Kennedy has been shoehorned into jobs at Celtic for whatever reason.

He should be out the door in 2 weeks or sooner as he is as culpable as Lennon for this season’s disaster

  17. Turkeybhoy

You are being kind when you say that some professionals have ` much better knowledge of JK,`. That would suggest that posters commenting on him have some actual knowledge as opposed to speculation based on what the Media choose to release (including Celtic TV).

  18. JHB

`If Ibrox can beat us when loss-making for ten years, what will they be capable of with the prospect of real money coming in?`

They have `real` money now. The sources are dodgy but the money is real.

  19. Our main focus should be on appointing the right management team.

In answer to Ernie’s question, i don’t believe Celtic have issued anything official. However, various journalists, bloggers and posters seem uniquely informed. I cant comment on the veracity of their information.

Regarding the hun finances and future income, we absolutely should be interested in this. In any competitive environment, analysis of ones main competitors is essential.

To do otherwise, would suggest the Celtic board are being negligent in their duties

  22. TURKEYBHOY @ 9:55

You never seem as optimistic, when talking about our future. When its us,its all doom and gloom.

    ———–

    I am being realistic.

Just like any team manager will do, I am looking at all the available markers to evaluate the prospective strength of the opposition. That is not “gloom & doom” surely.

We are in a state of flux and as yet we have nothing to base opinion on for next season.

I will have a view on our plans for next season when they are announced. What’s happened at Ibrox over the season & what might happen in the near future will be firmly on the agenda at Celtic Park – it has to be, they are our only real challengers.

  23. Obviously the powers that be regard JK as an asset and don’t want to lose that asset. Would anyone here get rid of something useful because someone down the street said they should.

  24. CaddingtonCommon on

    Just read back.

Absolutely astonished that some people had the audacity to post matters of football.

    Whatever next ?

  25. HOT SMOKED on 29TH APRIL 2021 10:18

    You make a valid point!

Their money has been ‘real & dodgy’ for over twenty years.

Financial probity matters little at Ibrox – winning at any cost does.

  26. TET

Reading back and caught your news. Hope it all works out good for your other half, and for yourself

  27. JHB

You get some ,IMO undeserved ,stick on here but I find your posts perfectly reasonable. Keep on keeping on.

    Cheerio for now.

PS I am not talking of those who make valid criticism. For instance, Turkeybhoy`s comment re negativity has an evidential basis but , as I said, keep on keeping on.

  28. (Not the) alternative view: Celtic will be on the up when (not if) they qualify for the 21/22 CL group stage, skoosh the SPFL for same period and thus automatically qualify for CL 22/23 group stage.

    Easy, innit.

    HH

  29. Friesdorfer

Quite agree. Can`t see why others can`t see the veracity of those very obvious and likely outcomes :-)

Hope all is well in Monifeith.
