McCann, Miller and sacking managers

137

If we are going to be fair to Neil McCann (I realise this is not a necessity), he produced a remarkable turnaround when appointed manager at Dundee in April last year.  Paul Hartley had them heading for relegation before the then Sky Sports panellist turned escapologist.

Eight games into the new season and Dundee are bottom on three points, 12 adrift of newly promoted Livingston, whom they face on Saturday.  Dundee United are suffering in the Championship but the appointment of Robbie Neilson brought a win on his first game at the weekend, raising the spectre that United could go up and Dundee down this season.

There are good reasons to change a manager during a campaign, but poor results alone is not one of them.  We have been here in the past.  Before you jump off a cliff, you need a good idea where you are going to land and that that place is more appropriate than the cliff edge.

There is a chance the Dundee board have agreement with a replacement they are confident in, but there’s also a chance they spent the international break squabbling and now decided to act out of fatigue.

Livingston sacked player-manager Kenny Miller two league games into his tenure, when it was plain to all at Celtic Park on the opening day of the season that his body language to team mates could be interpreted as uniquely challenging.  Since sacking MIller, Gary Holt has been a revelation.  One very wrong decision quickly followed by two very good decisions.

Miller was not sacked for poor results, his only league loss was at Celtic Park, Livingston clearly had other reasons.  Unless Dundee can point to a critical weakness in McCann, and assure themselves that his replacement will be able to avoid this scenario, the sacking will not affect their current trajectory.  Place your bets.

Was your use of the impersonal pronoun because you are not a Tim or because you are less easily duped than the rest of us?

Kev. keep telling us how daft we the Celtic support are for excepting everything the board do to us but please dont get into daft rumours about our manager he will see his contract out at Celtic. Some of the stuff you preach about the goings on at Parkhead are pretty near the mark but stupid rumours about Brendan does nothing for your credability. Good luck my friend and I hope your keeping well. H.H.

  5. A United Ireland is the aspiration of many on here.

Ultimately the decision has to be put to the people on the Island. The outcome will be interesting and unpredictable.

    HH.

  6. A United Ireland?

Do you not realise there are more important issues for some people out there?

    JimTim, Hello brother.

    @@@@.

Lol . My word really surprised I finally got a reply .

  11. So far I’ve not watched woman’s football, but it’s getting very popular. good on them. I listen to R4 Home Front every day. When it was in the North East of England during WW1 there was great programmes about girls football teams in the munition factories.

I quite enjoyed The Home Front too. Only really heard it on Thursdays though. Was quite informative about working conditions in munitions factories, which employed a lot of women at the time.

  13. The Home Front .

I’m a fan .Been with it since the very beginning . I’ll miss it when it ends .. The humanity / the daily life / the horror of the monstrous absurdity that was World War One and things like the married vicar who gets the hots for his Sunday school teacher .

  14. I get hugely emotional about the 2nd WW. Whereas the first ww was largely political, the second ww was about taking down one of the most evil regimes ever to visit our world.

My da tried on several occasions to sign up, but because he was in a reserved occupation – a miner – he got turned down. So he joined the home guard – Dads Army. My mother worked in the BNE at Carfin.

Much as I hate what Britain did with Ireland over the centuries and elsewhere, what we did in 1939-1945 was special and proudworthy. Hitler was the devil incarnate.

  15. Good morning CQN at 7am Midtown Manhattan time.

Weather here is to be colder of late but still dry, 50 degrees at its highest, bloody luxury for a Scotsman.. :) Weather has been brilliant yesterday was roasting at times and sunny.

Only covered 21 thousand odd steps yesterday from where we are staying at Herald Square (really good location), down to 9/11 Museum, Statue of Liberty (although we got a boat) Wall Street, financial district, Indian Museum, Brooklyn Bridge, this was really good, another amazing feat of engineering, Civic centre, some amazing buildings, Chinatown and onto little Italy, then walked part of the way back, but my old hip was giving me Gip, so we got a yellow taxi, and the driver was a really nice chatty guy, so he got a generous tip.

Again thanks for all the tips nd info and this place really is amazing and we will be back again someday.

We still have 3 days left and she who must be obeyed wants to do shopping and Maceys has 30% off. So designers here we come. Might go to Woodberry Common.

Sorry for long post and bring on the Hibees

Brendan is here for 10 IAR or untill he tells us otherwise.
