McCoist on wrong end of history

1325

You and I have been in some dark places.  While we remember winning nine-in-a-row by brilliant scouting, tactics and athletic endeavour, we also remember when that proud achievement was violated in 1997 by a considerably less wholesome achievement.

At the end of season 1995-96 Celtic finished second but lost only one game.  I convinced myself that our world was about to be put right.  Tommy Burns’ team would go one step further and win the league in 1997; it had to happen.

It didn’t.

Today I don’t want to talk about the reasons why we didn’t win the league in 1997, we will discuss that in the weeks ahead, but that season taught us the lesson that simply wanting something to happen doesn’t make it likely.

I thought of those dark days yesterday when I hear Ally McCoist’s rallying call:

“We’re going to march right through it

“I’m as positive today as I have been in a long time.

“This institution has been around for 140 years and I want it to be here for another 140 years.

“You’ll see what Rangers mean to so many people. We are really looking forward to the game.
“We have the best fans in the world.

McCoist loves his club the same way his good friend Tommy Burns loved his, but irrespective of the challenge he faces in the league from Neil Lennon’s awesome team, there is nothing McCoist can do to ensure his club survives until the end of the season.

When you’re on the wrong end of history there is nothing you can do about it.

I think we have all been blown away by the bidding on eBay action for the signed Celtic top in aid of the Vanessa Riddle Appeal. The auction ends today and currently sits at an incredible £5000. That’s three zeros, count them! I am very proud of you and your club.

Shortbread could get people hurt with their tone. What did Neil do wrong? It’s Saturday night in Glasgow for goodness sake. I know a bar owner in the city centre who put his security staff on at 5pm today. Stay safe all. HH.

If scoddish football is to sort itself out that mob need to first accept their wider responsibility for the position they are in, and the one that the Game is in………

If…..IF, they do this and work their way up from Div 3 they might just make it.

Traynor: “Given what I know, I see liquidation as a distinct possibility. They will apply to the SPL to come straight back into the SPL.”

Chic: “There’s nothing in place to say Rangers would have to play their way back up.”

Traynor: “There’s no place in the SFL for them. A handful of clubs will say we need some sort of deterrent with points deductions. But they need Rangers in the SPL.”

Chic: “No matter what happens people are going to be angry.”

Apart from this section of the SPL Rules that is.

Club ceasing to play and be a member of the League

H5 If any Club in the League ceases to operate or to be member of the League for any reason, its playing record in the League may be expunged and the number of relegation places from the League shall be reduced accordingly.

    You know the best bit?

These numpties are going to have to cover the biggest, best party Scottish football has seen in decades tomorrow. They are going to have to sit there in the middle of it.

That is going to make their pain of today seem minor.

Today was supposed to be the emotional, rejoining of Rangers’ spirit. It was another deep rend in the “fabric” of this bonkers football club. In short, the event which was supposed to fortify these people for tomorrow has been another sign-post on the Road to Hell.

Their feelings going into tomorrow can only be guessed at. But think on this.

This time last week we had just beaten Inverness 1-0 and maintained our four point lead at the top of the SPL. Things seemed to be going very, very well. Who knew what was about to happen?

Can it only have been seven days since then? How can Rangers have given notice to go into administration, fell into administration and then been propelled to the edge of liquidation inside a week? How can the …club which everyone in the media was still saying was in good health have been paying day-to-day expenses with HMRC money? How can we have found out that £9 million has been added to the debt and £23 million stolen? In a week?

Has there ever been a week like it? A week when our club blasts the man who is First Minister of Scotland? A week in which Strathclyde Police, PLUS, HMRC and the SFA all have seperate probes going on into the club which were (haha) our biggest rivals just seven days ago. Can this really have happened?

A week in which our hard fought four point lead turned into a 14 point deficit, which can become 17 points tomorrow. A week in which Ally says he has 100% faith in Craig Whyte and then does a U-turn one day later. A week in which the whole media builds up a match at Ibrox where Rangers only had to turn up to wipe the opposition away, only for them to lose it 1-0?

A week in which every journalist who has ignored this story, every hack who ever said we had it wrong, wants to talk about nothing else and is trying to convince us they saw this coming all along. A week in which RTC gets into the Guardian to slate the main street media, and they turn on each other. A week in which the comic caricature of a Rangers Legned, David Leggat, started out being a defender of Whyte and ended it asking why the SFA let him take control!

They say a week is a long time in politics.

Holy Hell, but it’s a long time in football alright. Think where we were just seven days ago.

Then think where we will be seven days from now ….

No wonder they are hurting. And the pain is only just begining.

  14. Ma wee tuppence worth…….i wis 16 when Souness rolled up. If anybody needs a reminder of the sheer, unabated and total arrogance of Rangers, just think back to his first year or two. Now, im in my forties and i can still feel the dread of going into my work on a Monday in the late 80’s to face the most smug shower of pigs i ever met. I was a kid, they were grown men and believe you me, they absolutely revelled in putting me right in my place and i can remeber every single one of thier contorted faces as they let me ‘know the score’. Then again, my tales is only one of thousands.

Do i feel sorry for them??
