McCoist quite right to hold firm line

980

In terms of pure logic, Ally McCoist was quite right to insist, “I can also assure every Rangers fan I will not be accepting any talk of stripping the club of titles. That is something we will never accept and everyone at the club shares this view.”

It is outrageous to put Sevco in the position of accepting Rangers are stripped of previous league titles while due process has not been carried out.  The very fact that the SFA and SPL are negotiating with Sevco over this matter is reason enough for McCoist to issue a firm rebuttal.  Quite simply, if the authorities are prepared to negotiate, their offer should be rejected until the last moment possible, at which point they will be meekly accepted.

The SFA and SPL must allow due process to take place and remove any need for Sevco to rubber-stamp a judgement on Rangers.  It is wholly inappropriate to discuss or agree the consequences of a guilty verdict, or subsequent punishments (losing titles won illegally is not a punishment), until a verdict is recorded.

Due process, please, nothing more and nothing less.  If Rangers didn’t illegally register players for over a decade neither they nor Sevco have anything to worry about.

When Ajax go from a Saturday domestic game to an EL or CL game, they don’t have to play in such a different manner. It’s not a huge step up, unless they are playing Barca, Real, etc.

It’s a huge step up for us from a domestic SPL game! The gulf is too great and it’s not something that can be rectified quickly.

A Cypriot team with a mere fraction of our budget won their CL group stage last season. I think they actually got through to the last 8. How can that happen, when we could only manage last 16?

Between us and the Financial Dope’s 11, foreign coaches and players were tried, millions spent, but we still couldn’t achieve what that small Cypriot club did last season. Why?

Basically down to luck, WGS team should’ve/could’ve beaten Milan and got thru, we punched well above our weight just like the Cypriot team.

Euro football for teams like us is down to the luck of the draw and sometimes luck in the game. I always see it as a bonus, never expect to beat anyone to be honest.

I have just seen my old uncle on to a plane back home after 10 days in Cyprus. I say uncle but he’s been more like my dad these past 20 years.

I brought him here for a family wedding.

He’s 85 and can hardly walk now and his general health is failing. I thought i would get him over for a Kelly family hooley while he still could, being as how there is nothing in the world he loves more that a good family shindig, and a song or six.

He has been a Celtic man all his life, Clydebank born, family of eleven, all now gone except for him.

Don’t get me wrong – he is father to three, grandfather to nine and great-grandfather to two and he is still blessed with the company of the Sligo lass he wed in 1947, who has a love of English beer and the voice of a foghorn on account of her ears being pummelled by a lifetime working in the Yorkshire mills.

We had night after late night on the balcony here, talking about the Celtic and related matters.

He told me about how he joined the merchant navy at 19, having had a bellyfull of the ‘whit school did ye go to’ approach to employment in the Clydeside shipyards.

And about his awe at being handed the West Riding Cup by John Charles when he captained his Yorkshire town’s winning team.

I got a taxi to take us both to a bar where the Ajax game was on.

I was shocked at the level of performance, well, our level of performance, and I was spitting feathers, as a lot on here have been doing.

He just sat there, applauding Ajax for their play.

Back at the balcony i said something like: “Did you not find that embarrassing?”

I will paraphrase, because his reply lasted about an hour. Never, ever say that the eleven men in the hoops embarrass you. Yes, i would like to see Celtic win every game they play, but being a Celtic man means more than winning.

He told me of the black, black days of the late 40s, the 50s and early 60s: “what would you have done then, when we were winning nothing? Not gone? Gone, and booed the players? Fernie, Peacock, Stein, Tully? Success isn’t a right. We follow the Celtic through thick and thin. Otherwise you can’t call yourself a supporter.”

I know this is the attitude of a very old man, and probably doesn’t chime well in 2012. But it will do for me.

He also said that he never thought he would live to see the day that “that mob of bigots, hooligans and louts” would ever get their come-uppance in a country where they were regarded as “the footballing wing of the anti-Irish establishment”, which is a phrase i am going to steal and pass off as my own.

I think he might have one last jaunt in him. I want to take him, later this year, to the Estadio Nacional – i went there myself last year – and sit him down at the exact same spot of concrete he occupied on that day of days in 1967.

Sorry for rambling on but i’m sat on the balcony here as the sun goes down, and i’m missing them.

For every game they played with players on dual contracts, ie illegally registered a 0-3 result must be recorded. Then the records will be adjusted.

As stated here and elsewhere this is not a punishment, just the administration of the rules. An administrative process.

Interesting …..the gift that keeps on giving

“In the debate over whether the SPL buys the broadcast rights to SFL games featuring Rangers, we’ve just spotted a rather interesting quirk. Sevco Scotland Limited was accepted to the SFL as an Associate Member, and will not be eligible for full Member status for four years. Rule 19 of the SFL Constitution says:

“An Associate Member shall have no financial interest in the assets of the League and shall not be accorded any voting rights.”

We assume “the assets of the League” include its media rights. (Indeed, as far as we can see those would be pretty much the only assets jointly owned by the League.) Rule 19 would seem to suggest that if the SFL does want to sell “Rangers” games to the SPL – or indeed to anyone else – not only will the newco not be entitled to a vote on the matter, but it won’t be entitled to any of the money either.

We haven’t seen anyone else mention this. It seems quite significant.”

I gave up watching after 2-0 to be honest. I see pre-season as marketing. Ajax – first pool, second pool – are always going to be an organised outfit.

We were getting skelped down that right hand side. With I think 5 in midfield.

The Europa Cup Winners – the last 8 eight of that comp in fact – are light years in front of Celtic.

It’s a shame, but it’s a fact. In much the same way as the English pundits and commentators are now realising that ‘you can’t/won’t win anything with bulldogs’ – how can Celtic (A Scottish team who will lose any talent worthy of that level to England at the least) compete and improve – unless we employ Jim MacLean type contracts?

  26. Philbhoy, you are quite simply an idiot – sometimes you’ve got to call a spade a spade. I’m not sure you really understand what the word supporter means, but I’ve supported Celtic all my life and take quite a bit of offence at some idiot who claims I’m not because I comment honestly on what was a disgraceful performance. Maybe we should all state pravda-like that all is rosy in the garden ?? Or is stating your opinion now hunnish behaviour ?? What a stupid stupid individual you seem.

  27. Ps philbhoy, the disgust and embarrassment I expressed at last nights performance was felt pretty universally by those in attendance. then again all of us at the match were probably just hunnish, not real supporters, and people who should not be welcomed at Celtic Park ???
