McGinn will sign for Villa

229

John McGinn will sign for Aston Villa before the English transfer window closes tomorrow afternoon.  Celtic’s most recent offer for the player was made several days ago and, unlike earlier bids, was not rejected by Hibs.  I understand Villa matched this offer, and the terms offered to the player.  While Hibs were in Europe, they were always going to wait until near the English deadline.

Celtic were honest with the player, who was told he would not be first choice, but would get a chance when others were rested or injured.  Steve Bruce, however, told McGinn he would be first choice every week and the core of the new Villa midfield.

I know he’s a Celtic fan, but the player is entitled to make this decision for football reasons.  He will be 23-years-old in two months, not by any measure a youth.  Young players come, happy to wait their turn, but it’s a hard sell to someone who wants to play every week.

We move on…

  1. Regards Brendan Rodgers supposedly being unhappy, he has Brown, Ntcham, Rogic and McGregor. 4 truly outstanding footballers. Millions of pounds were wasted on Kouassi, the supposed successor to Brown. Throughout an entire scouting network is John McGinn the best we could come up with?

  2. Here’s the problem, none of our opinions as supporters matters one jot when it comes to McGinn. Whether we rate him or not is completely irrelevant. The only opinion at our club that matters when it comes to transfers is that of our manager. That’s why he is here, that’s what he is paid for. He has stated as a matter of fact that he identified McGinn months ago as a player he wanted (our team captain echoed that view just in case the message was not being received loud and clear by the press).

    So our manager has told the board, go and get it sorted. The money being talked about should not have been a barrier. Somethng along the lines of a third of Armstrong’s fee or a quarter of VVD’s sell on fee was all that it was going to take.

    What happened next is up for debate and for PR spin. No matter what Paul says above, I do not believe for one moment that McGinn is demanding first team football, he would know that he would have got plenty of chances to play, just like pretty much all the others midfield players have done over the past 2-3 seasons.

    Those that know him and know him well have all given out the same message – he wants to sign for Celtic. Our best manager in 5 decades wants him at CP.

    BR’s press conference said it all. Our manager is not happy with the board’s inability to deliver the players he has identified and identified months ago. No matter how much spin some of you would like to put on it, he is not happy.

    Good luck to McGinn wherever he goes. I don’t think it will be a big loss but our manager does and that is something that PL will now have to deal with.

    Im not that bothered either, but BR will be thats my concern.

    Its always the manager that carries the can but the plc truck on as if nothing ever happened. What does Bankier do for Celtic, apart from besmirch the fans.

    ———————————————————————————-

    If John McGinn was BR’s No 1 priority signing then I’m even more concerned by that.

    Re the board – they are Dermo’s board and BR is Dermo’s man. Maybe if Dermo had shown up to a board meeting in the past decade these wee misunderstanding wouldn’t happen. Or would they?

  4. Thank god for that. What a blooming circus for a bang average SPFL blood and snotters type who won us over due to his Celtic credentials and was far from the finished article. IMHO.

    He chose not to improve and fight for the jersey. Fair enough.

    Would never have made the ECL squad for the qualifiers and has become a distraction although a useful new stick for the board bashers.

    Pleased to move on and hopefully we welcome Arzani and get quality in at the back.

    This bid we made before Aston Villa- how come Brendan Rodgers didn’t know about it?

    Aston Villa were allowed to talk to MCGinn- why did Celtic not have him over for a medical as soon as the fee was agreed before Villa moved in?

    Q: Can you tell us the position as it stands with John McGinn?

    “No, other than they’ve been working on it for the last few months. At this moment I don’t have anything further to add. Clearly Aston Villa have come in and maybe found an agreement with Hibs, I assume, which is why they would let him travel’.

    So we apparently made agreement but the player decided to hang about or Hibs waited or we waited after our bid was accepted?

  6. weebobbycollins on

    If BR wanted him and Lawwell wouldn’t get him, then that is unhealthy…

    I hope Lawwell gets a sinkhole in his heated driveway…

  7. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

    I’ll summarise for those who don’t seem to have grasped what Paul is saying:

    Hibs are playing and Europe and wanted to keep their best player until the last minute;

    Celtic matched the fee agreed with Villa;

    Celtic matched the personal terms offered by Villa;

    Brendan Rogers could not guarantee McGinn regular first team football;

    Steve Bruce has guaranteed first team football;

    McGinn wants to play every week;

    McGinn therefore chose Villa.

  8. So the board spin is he wasn’t first choice, Dearie Me.

    It sort of goes against what the manager is saying by wanting quality that will improve the team, hard to do that from the bench.

    Taken for mugs again.

    This whole article is an embarrassment to CQN it really is.

    But the sentence I’ve reposted below is the most cringeworthy bullshit you are likely to read anywhere.

    ‘Steve Bruce, however, told McGinn he would be first choice every week and the core of the new Villa midfield.”

    Aye so he did. Right you are Paul67.

    Pure spin.

    The player would have signed cheerfully but has now slipped through our fingers.

    Heated Driveway Productions are still in business.

    Has Peter allowed this saga to get personal with Mr Petrie? Has his oneupmanship now alienated his manager? Looks like a spectacular own goal to me.

    How does Peter square his low ball offers for McGinn with his rejection of the Boyata bid? Both in the final year of their contracts.

    To the man on the street it’s quite simple really, you pay the money for the player you want and you take the money for the player that wants to leave. With the balance of profit on that player trading you go out and secure the new centre back that has already been identified and sounded out. After all, once Boyata headed to Russia without a new contract a la Rogic, we all knew he needed to be sold and replaced.

    Peter had better pray that Brendan and the players play him out of this mess. The Board have not backed the manager properly over this saga. It’s unforgivable. McGinn came cheap even at the asking price.

    THE BLOGGER FORMERLY KNOWN AS GM,

    I think you have mis read the article.

    It said Celtic made a bid that was accepted before Villas.

    To add to the inconsistency of the header blog I would question why the excuse for timescales is Hibs wanting to hold on to the player for their European ties – eh what about the ones they still have to play?

    Celtic matched the Aston Villa bid or Villa matched the Celtic bid depending on the direction of the banana boat you are travelling in… so both bids being the same and you are Hibs and your wanting to hold on to the player for all your games in Europe … you would think Celtic would then be the preferred bid?

  19. GENE on 8TH AUGUST 2018 3:46 PM

    If you believe what the manager said the priorities after keeping Rogic and KT was replacements for Armstrong and Roberts.

    CH, LB, RB etc are what supporters want.

  20. whomever NFL identifies as the replacement for McGinn CELTIC should buy , afterall the scouting system doesn’t seem to be working , imo……going down the old bhoy route , tried and trusted seems to be the way for now.

    COYBIG ….Any win with a professional performance please .

  21. to throw the grenade in….maybe Brendan has been told we need to loose another central midfielder (kouassi) and attacking midfielder (hayes or johnstone) and centre half (commper/jozo/boyata) if we are to bring any of the 3 positions in. only thing that makes sense.

  22. There’s plenty on here that would have paid 4 mil for John McGinn, like buying a one pound ticket for three pound just because you’ve got 20…

    Midfield should not be our priority this window, I can see what BR saw in McGinn but it begs the question what are we doing with EK ??

    I am astounded of forehead at how desperate some on here appear to be to accept the interpretation of a hostile Press in Fair Caledonia.

    *and their sycophants who proclaim doom and gloom, yesterday, apart fae the good news of the weans and their exam results, the site has been brutal, all weeping and gnashing of teeth.

    First of all we have John McGinn who hauf the site don’t want anyway, now it’s the end of the world should he no sign. Oh and it’s all his grampa’s fault.

    Then there’s sevco signing a croat who none of us had ever heard of until he scored the equaliser last Thursday. Croatia were finalists in the WC, their best showing in 20 years and it’l be the same before they reach that peak again as they are an aging squad and nothing seems tae be coming through.

    The domestic side is like Scotland, apart from one or two good sides, Zagreb and Split the rest are scheitd, but now this latest acquisition is a world beater, give me wee Izzy back again any day.

    The scouse git © Alf Garnett is like a wean in the proverbial sweetie shop spending money on sweetie bags and lucky potatoes. Yet it seems as if we’re asleep at the wheel.

    As for AEK or Another Early Knockout as they were proclaimed after gubbing deidco home and away 24 year ago in the qualifiers, a deidco side with new signings boli and laudrup in it. They finished bottom of their group below Casino Salzburg, who???, without winning a game and losing 9 goals that year.

    Greek teams apart from Panathinaikos, they of the shamrock strip, have not fared well in all European club tournaments. Scottish sides, us, deidco, sheep and arabs have all fared better, FGS Hibs reached the first semis of the original big cup, Dundee the semis tae beating Sporting Club and Anderlecht enroute, Dunfermline the semis of the ECWC and Killie the semis of the ould Fairs Cities Cup.

    We have nothing to fear the night and if, a big if, the worst scenario occurs we drop intae the Europa where we’ll end up anyway with a good chance of winning it.

    Level 5 is having a field day on here and it continues today.

  29. Big Wavy at 3.34, far too reasonable a post my friend ;-)

    Far too much airtime, ‘newspaper’ time and blog time expended on this story. A decent player in a purely Scottish context. I wish him well but I don’t see him pulling up trees in European football (of which he’ll get none at Villa anyway). Time to move on.

    As others have also said – the worry here is not missing out on McGinn, but a pissed off BR. He wanted the player, and was well within our price range. If PL had delivered, then if McGinn hadn’t worked out then that was on BR.

    Speaking as a fan of PL, it looks on the face of it that he’s got this one badly wrong.
