McGregor, no better finisher in Scottish football

327

Very grateful to whoever at the BBC researched that Celtic are the third team in European football history to achieve the Double Treble, after The New Saints (TNS) and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).  This level of brilliance it exceptional by any standards.

Despite the levels of dominance TNS and PSG enjoy in their domestic leagues, neither were able to complete a Treble Treble; only Celtic can do that now.

The Scottish Cup Final was an exercise in game management by Brendan Rodgers.  His team took a two goal lead and set about making sure Motherwell would be unable to lay a glove on them.

The strongest weaker foot in the game

Among the remarkable performances on the day, special mention has to go to Callum McGregor.  Yet again he scored on the big stage, yet again with his supposed weaker foot, yet again the crucial first goal.  His game intelligence bought him the space to attack when the ball was headed out of the Motherwell penalty area.  The shot, hit on the drop-volley, was controlled and crisp.

I doubt there is a better finisher in Scottish football.

    Gene,

I remember reading reports of Callum’s time at County, saying how well liked he was and praising his ability.

I think he was scoring goals from midfield.

I know you have first hand knowledge of his time there, but I must admit, when he came back and featured in Ronnie’s early teams, I thought that there was a skillful player there.

    Opinions, eh?

BSR @ 12.35…I arrived in Seville on the Saturday and saw the daily increase in hoops tops until the day of the game when it was like the tide coming in. The Irish bar next to the cathedral seemed to be the epicentre of this Celtic storm…I’ll never be able to forget that whole experience…from being wakened, on the day of the game, at about 5 am by the sound of bagpipes down in the narrow street below my window to entering the stadium 45 minutes before ko and witnessing the sight and sound of Celtic. I’ll admit now that my eyes watered and my heart pounded…I was also in Lisbon but that was a fly in and fly out trip…my itinerary said a pre-match tour of the city then on to the stadium, however, as it turned out, we went straight from the airport to the ground, arriving about 5 minutes before ko. I just got to my position as the players came out on to the field…again the heart was pounding….(my pulse rate always increases when I get within a few hundred yards of the stadium…ever since I was a wee Celtic nipper)…

  4. I would like to take this moment to express my thanks to Brendan and the Bhoys for winning the Scottish Cup on Saturday and thus sealing a second treble in succession – the much coveted Double Treble. Many congratulations to everyone involved in pulling off this great feat. I came home from the game very happy but exhausted and the magnitude of what has been achieved is just sinking in. I think we can do it again next year because we have such a great squad and such a great manager. Brendan is the King of Cool. As for our supporters – truly magnificent!

    Hail! Hail!

PS I don’t think Moussa wants to leave. I hope he, too, is here for 10 in a row.

I’ve been very fortunate to have started supporting Celtic from 1953 onward’s,I was there when we gubbed the huns in 57 7-1, then in 67 had the good fortune to go over to Lisbon on May the 25th,to support Celtic making a bit of history by being the first UK team to win the European cup,Also to see Celtic win nine in a row,but in a three years time could,I could be seeing them do Ten in a row

My first three games were in 1959 while I was still aged 7. My brother took me with his mates. My first game funnily enough was Celtic 3-3 Motherwell. The bugger then joined the Navy and my Dad wouldn’t let me go to games until I was at secondary school and a crowd of us started going on Phil Cole’s bus.

  7. and I’ve just saw them winning a double treble, marvellous time to be a Celtic Supporter.

Bloody idiot, I forgot to add that we bit on at the end of the last.

  8. Unfortunately MoN is only one of many from the Celtic family that seem to have no issue with being cheated out of trophies. You would think the closer you were to the business end of things, where trophies mean bonus payments, the more peeved of you would be. Au contraire Rodney, au Contraire.

  9. Young McGregor (they are all young to me) is the neatest player I have seen in a while.

His goals have a tidiness about them as has his general play.

Not quite Iniesta but heading there I hope.

One thing that really did hack me off this morning was listening to BBC Radio 2, sports bulletin just before 8am, when they played Martin O’Neill’s comments about a ‘strong Rangers’ but attributed them to ‘Celtic manager Brendan Rogers’. I didn’t hear any correction subsequently.

I don’t suspect any attempt at making trouble, just some casually crap journalism along the lines of ‘Well it sounds a bit Irishy, must be Brendan Rodgers…mustn’t it? Play the tape!’

Gonna stick my neck out and say that Callum will be one of the top midfielders in Europe in 2-3 years.

His ability and game intelligence has always been there. Has added consistency and now, with being a regular pick, seems to believe in himself more.

Although I missed the 7-1 game, due to playing for the Guild that day, the newspaper pictures of the goals adorned my bedroom wall from that weekend until I got married in 1970.

We stayed with my parents for a while and “someone” decided that it was time they came down off the wall!!

  13. I thought some of CalMacs wee touches – esp with KT – to nip and flick the ball from Danger to counterattack were exceptional.

  14. James McClean looked a strong bhoy yesterday.

He makes no secret of his love of Celtic.

He would give 100% for the jersey.

Would he fit into Brendan system?

    Are his wages a barrier.

The backlash he would face in the best wee country would make Lennon’s treatment pale in comparison.

The mssm probably have their poppy shit copy written as a contingency in case it ever happens.

The refs would put his name in the book before the game started.

Circumstances outwit our control will probably stop this bhoy from realizing his dream.

We never learn, quick to evaluate. Demand it all yesterday. Compare things with your own experiences of love, work and life the next time a player dawns to jersey.

Its been done to death but despite the lesson of Henrik’s first game and the reaction, the knee jerk brigade are always first and loudest on the ramparts.

If this season has taught us anything, surely it is that our throw-ins still need work. Trophies are all very well, but you need to get the basics right. Brendan please note.

Got to agree with that TOSB. My mates and I have remarked on it for years.

Calum McGregor has had an excellent season and scored some very fine and important goals. However 30 goals in !65 games is a ratio of a goal every 5.5 games. You wouldn’t attribute greatest finisher with figures like that.

  22. weebobbycollins on

Like Oldtim67, I have been supporting the team since the fifties. I was at the 1956 league cup final replay v partick…the 7-1 hun game I listened to on the wireless with my dad. When the game was over he took me to rutherglen to see the supporters buses coming up from hampden. We stood outside the Glen Bar and watched bus after bus coming along, mainly over-crowded double-deckers, with scarves, flags and mad-as-a-hatter guys hanging out the windows and off the platforms…supporters buses were quite different in those days. I haven’t been on one for decades (henry healy bus from kirkwood st)…the ones I see these days seem very orderly and well behaved. Whit? Nae cairry oots?

Is it really like that? Would be interested to hear stories from guys who travel on buses…

  27. The difference between St MON and St Brendan is that MON grew out of Celtic whereas Brendan has grown in and is much more committed than O’Neil ever was with his one year rolling very near went to Leeds, what a wise decision he made there.

Brendan has done more in the EPL than MON and is better looking he’s a better dancer, singer, and general all round good guy, and hasn’t even fully opened the Celtic cheque book.
