McInnes proves point with second win over Celtic

789

The clean sheet record had to go eventually, so I’m pleased it went to a good goal, not an error by Fraser, which would have been harsh on the big keeper.  Having already recorded Celtic’s, then Scotland’s league clean sheet record, the British and European records were within touching distance, but that is now a matter for next season.

Months ago, when Virgil van Dijk first suggested we could go through the league season without defeat I said we were not nearly consistent enough to achieve this.  Ironically, last night’s defeat came after a sustained period of consistent an authoritative performances, in the league.

Aberdeen will have lots of reasons to wonder where there team might go now, having beaten Celtic twice in a month.  Amid all the newspaper talk in 2012 that Celtic needed their soon to be liquidated opponent, a few of us suggested that what Celtic really need is an opponent, and that Aberdeen, playing to a captive audience in a wealthy city, were the most likely candidates.

Manager, Derek McInnes, knows he does not have the resources to compete over a league programme, but he has proven a few points:  he knows how to beat Celtic and his team are the best of the rest.

If Aberdeen can cope with the vagaries of trips to Easter Road and Victoria Park next season, four games against Celtic will take care of themselves.  Let’s hope Newco Rangers don’t nip in and buy their best players with that non-emergency £1.5m loan.

The immediate challenge for Celtic is to get back into winning form on Saturday.  League Cup finalists, Inverness, will come to make up the numbers.

  1. During the 9iar years the Lions and the sides who followed them never went through a season unbeaten in the league.

The closest they came was in ’67/68 when they only lost once – 1-0 away to the huns on the second day of the season.

They then went on an unbeaten run for the remainder of the season in the league – 32 games.

    Them wur the days!

the strength is in the people, even go play in the lowest league but lets now get a reality check, this league is killing us slowly, forget the profit, we want entertained but lets achieve what we deserve.

    Lovely day-way down south.

  7. Now the record has gone I hope we can all agree this team has gone back the way under Neil this season. I hope he gives youth and the likes of Balde a few games now. No point in us showing up otherwise.

  8. There is only two more things Celtic must do from now to the end of the season-

    Tie up the league ASAP.

If Celtic continue to beat the other sides this should happen either in March depending on Aberdeen’s results or early April.

Aberdeen lost to Thistle at the weekend – a side who cannot win at home or haven’t done all season.

That is perspective for many reasons – they are not capable of beating us over a season because they’ll have results like losing 3-1 to a struggling side and Hearts have beaten the same Aberdeen side home and away this season with all their problems.

Losing to them hurts because they think they are good now.

I am right behind Yogi Hughes and Inverness for that cup final and anyone but Sevco for the Scottish cup.

It’s a great feeling sitting watching other teams be where you think you should be. Thank goodness out ineptitude is making the game more interesting in Scotland eh?

No, once the league has been settled Celtic MUST and I mean MUST give Aberdeen a beating in the league so strong and so completely decisive that they will slink back to Sheep land knowing you can win one off games but you’ll always be at best number 2 to us.

Only that can make up for the pain of this month in my opinion.

Other than that we are only playing out time waiting for a cup to show our supposed dominance over the game in Scotland.

It should have been so much more.

Still fed up with this season and still cannot find anyone who thinks this season has been a good one with credible reasons.

  9. Sorry to get back to the red card for VVD. The laws of the game don’t say “denying a goalscoring opportunity”.

They say “denying an OBVIOUS goalscoring opportunity”

I’m not convinced it was obvious. Ball was pushed well ahead of him, the wind was blowing hard in that direction, going away from the goal, Efe was coming over to cover….

  10. Dear oh dear.

I see some clown is suggesting in the Daily Record today that we ditch broony and buy John McGinn as he can tackle without fouling.

Swap a guy with 3 domestic bookings for a guy with 8!!

Where do we get these tw@ts from?

  11. Super Sutton

I know it’s cool to have this fake magnanimous attitude but I’d be amazed if efe didn’t get a block on pawlet if he escaped VVD.

    We are an SPFL side.

A good one, but, at the moment, this is our level.

To progress, we need to inject more energy into the side.

We cannot afford to carry three and it was recently, four, players who lack genuine pace.

Stokes, Commons, Mulgrew and recently, Ledley, whilst being good enough players in their own right, slow our game down, to the extent that they are fairly easily put under pressure.

There is some cause for optimism with the arrivals of Griffiths, Balde, Pukki and Biton, plus Johannsen.

These are players who play on the front foot.

Add a fit Forrest and we have an opportunity to advance.

In the modern game, in Europe, skill is not enough. There has to be energy, all over the park.

Pace and energy can’t be coached, you either have it, or you don’t.

The question is, having signed these players, will Neil use the remaining games to integrate them into the team, or will he stick with players who, I think, have had their time at the club?

There should have been no new contract for Stokes and if Commons is being offered a new one, it should be on reduced terms.

As for Charlie? Well he is handy to have around as a utility player.

C’mon Neil, show us your mettle.

Possibly, but we would need some continuity.

Whatever his playing faults may be, he, at least has drive and energy.

    A kind of handsome Gattuso!!

  24. Thomthethim for Oscar ok

Pace not such a big issue for at eam designed to hold position .

If we were a proactive side then it would be vital.

I agree Mulgrew is no more than a good utility player but he is a coaches favorite.

Stokes is an enigma part brilliant part brutal but to often selfish for my liking.

Personally think its an injection in the coaching department that we really need.

Static and predictable way to often.

An interesting example of differences coaches make to team is Bayern Munich.

Lots of pretty pointless sideways and backwards passing that does not seem to get the best out of their pace and power.

I thought they were better last year with their power and directness.

Guardiola is a fine coach but not sure correct fit for squad he has.
