McInnes proves point with second win over Celtic

789

The clean sheet record had to go eventually, so I’m pleased it went to a good goal, not an error by Fraser, which would have been harsh on the big keeper.  Having already recorded Celtic’s, then Scotland’s league clean sheet record, the British and European records were within touching distance, but that is now a matter for next season.

Months ago, when Virgil van Dijk first suggested we could go through the league season without defeat I said we were not nearly consistent enough to achieve this.  Ironically, last night’s defeat came after a sustained period of consistent an authoritative performances, in the league.

Aberdeen will have lots of reasons to wonder where there team might go now, having beaten Celtic twice in a month.  Amid all the newspaper talk in 2012 that Celtic needed their soon to be liquidated opponent, a few of us suggested that what Celtic really need is an opponent, and that Aberdeen, playing to a captive audience in a wealthy city, were the most likely candidates.

Manager, Derek McInnes, knows he does not have the resources to compete over a league programme, but he has proven a few points:  he knows how to beat Celtic and his team are the best of the rest.

If Aberdeen can cope with the vagaries of trips to Easter Road and Victoria Park next season, four games against Celtic will take care of themselves.  Let’s hope Newco Rangers don’t nip in and buy their best players with that non-emergency £1.5m loan.

The immediate challenge for Celtic is to get back into winning form on Saturday.  League Cup finalists, Inverness, will come to make up the numbers.

  4. Why did VvD have to make the challenge, it was early in the game, he could have chased the player down and perhaps harried him into making a bad shot, if he hadn’t tackled the player there was a 33% chance he could have missed the goal, a 33% chance FF would have saved a shot and 33% chance he would have scored, odds are in favor of defending team.

So he scores, lots of time left in the game with 11 against 11.

Coaches should be drumming into players not to commit sending off offences in the first 30 minutes of a game, better to go a goal down early than a man down.

    Just my opinion……HH

  6. We were beaten by better goals last night- twice as may as we scored and one of them was twice as good as most goals we’ve conceded this year. I’d rather we had won . We didn’t. I move on.

I reflect not on the score but on the excellent performance of Biton. The energy of Griffiths, the drive of Scott Brown ( still not my cup of tea ) who looked solid last night. Dare I say it he was like a captain!

But.. 2 things crossed my mind more than others:

    1. Griffiths tackle on Hayes- I’ve see red produced for that kind of tackle.

    2. Why is Balde played for. 5 mins at end of every game?

Well we can now consider what kind of season we have had while Lennie tells his players they have done well. Now being knocked out of the CL and being bottom of our group may well be excusable when you consider who our opposition was. Knocked out of the league cup at Parkhead by Morton a disgrace in my opinion knocked out of the Scottish cup at Parkhead by Aberdeen ranks as poor the only honour this year will be the league many on CQN would say thats a good season.Unfortunately with the money we spend on players on transfer fees and wages we should be doing better Lennie has made mistakes throught the season and in life who doesnt make mistakes however,we expect to learn from them im not sure Lennie does.I would mark his report as must do better I would be happy to give him another season but if we dont do better I think we should consider a change. H.H.

“he knows how to beat Celtic and his team are the best of the rest.”

While I agree with the latter part of that – and hope a Scottish cup victory proves it – I can’t agree with the first part.

The win in the cup was justified. I don’t think Aberdeen won last night because they have us sussed.

We lost principally because we lost our best player.

Dundee Utd beat us twice in the league in 1967, as a friend of mine when I worked in Fife reminded me daily…

  14. Due to the media line pushing the “same club” lie all the time. The constant bombardment means people sometimes slip up.

That’s maybe the reason why even Paul67 sometimes refers to the club currently playing at Ibrox as Newco and not Newclub

Not if the local hard guy was just the wee brother of the real hard man who had just died and was the doped up favourite of the local gangsters controlling the boxing.

My thoughts re ’85th minute man’ Balde,

If we wanted a player to come on for the last 5 minutes of games I would much rather have kept Paddy.

We are bigger than most of the mob down south, lets take what we deserve.. Regardless of where we start, EPL is where we belong…. Bisman won, why can’t we??

    ===

Bosman is a totally different scenario to the one we face leaving Scotland. All FA’s are basically clubs and like most clubs you are either invited to join or you apply to join. And if they don’t want you in their club then tough! Not much you can do if all the members vote and the majority say no. Regardless if UEFA would sanction a move or not the fact is the English do not want us the old ‘Turkeys don’t vote for Xmas’ analogy. Outwith the super rich clubs all other clubs would view Celtic as a major threat to their ambitions and survival in the top flight. Add the political dimension to any potential move south – that is if Scotland doesn’t remain in then UK a move anywhere would become almost impossible IMO. Unfortunately the reality is we are going nowhere for the foreseeable future and we will soon have to contend with the Zombies smashing up the toilets at CP and telling us to all go home. It will be like nothing has ever changed.
