Media welcome Nicolas Kuhn received in Glasgow

369

Como!  Who knew?  You might expect the side who finished 10th in Serie A last season would be a source of players for Celtic (Reggina were 13th when we signed our former right winger Shunsuke Nakamura from them 20 years ago).  Now Como are signing teenagers from Betis for €22m and apparently Nicolas Kuhn for €19m.

This is the world, there’s no point complaining about it.  Como are the plaything of Indonesian owners, who have funded a rise from Siere D (where Reggina now are).  We have seen similar vanity projects playout across Europe.  They seldom end well, but before they burn out, there’s millions to be made for football players.

No one should expect anything other than Nicolas Kuhn making the most of his earning potential.  It is why he came to Celtic in the first place and why Celtic continue to attract players from across the globe to live in Glasgow, protected from harmful sun rays 99% of the year.  This is the world, let’s make the most of it.

It would be remis of me not to mention how some in the old media, followed by many online, treated the news of Nicolas signing for Celtic.  A know-nothing from Austria (billed as an “expert”) was given a platform to explain how “rubbish” the player was.  Celtic have an incredible ability to sell rubbish for €19m.

Whatever the process was that identified and selected Nicolas Kuhn, let’s have more of this “rubbish”.

BRENDAN RODGERS admits he’s undecided on striker Johnny Kenny’s immediate Celtic future.

The 22 year-old Irish hitman scored in the 1-0 win over Queen’s Park on Friday night.

Rodgers has been impressed with Kenny’s fitness levels since returning for preseason training.

But he’s weighing up whether to send the forward out on loan ahead of the new season.

Bolton lead a number of clubs interested in snapping up £1million-rated Kenny who spent the first half of last season at Shamrock Rovers.

Rodgers said: I’ve spoken to a few clubs and there’s been a host of clubs that want to take him on loan.

“I just want to have a look in pre-season just to see where we’re at and see what’s going to be the best for his development.

“We obviously want him to be a Celtic player. He’s a goalscorer. There’s absolutely no doubt about that.

“It’s what’s going to be the best for him and Celtic and whether that’s going to be here or whether it’s just go away and get some more games and play.

“But I’ll assess that over pre-season.

“He’s big on the pitch, he’s bigger in his uniform.

“He presses, he runs, he’s aggressive. And like I say, 25 yards in, he’s a very good finisher.

“So, we think there’s a lot of talent there, we want to try and develop that and we’ll see how he does over the course of pre-season.”

Rodgers insists it’s vital Celtic clear a pathway for their best young players to merge through the ranks.

He added: “I think probably some of the problem here has been over many years, there’s too many players.

“So actually, the talented players aren’t getting through quick enough. That’s the reality.

    “So it’s finding a way.

“We’ve got guys in now with Paul Tisdale and Shaun Maloney now. They know the game. They’ve been around it. And the job is to get them through quick. We’ve got talents.

“How can we get them through quickly into the first team? Not be the talented best player under 16 staying under 16.

“That’s why the kid is up now training with ourselves and there’s one or two other boys. So, there’s a pathway here. There absolutely will be.

“But we’ve got to get them through quickly and balance it between the pressure and whether they need a loan or whether they’re ready to go straight in.”

Rodgers, meanwhile, insists Cameron Carter-Vickers, James Forrest and Reo Hatate are expected to start full training this week after recent injuries.

He added: “Cam had some issues around the end of last season.

“But we decided this was really important for him and he needed that to get the operation.

“We knew then the recovery time would mean he’d miss a week.

“But he’s back working again and, hopefully, be ready for the next few weeks.

“With Reo, was just a shame for him. He’s had a few extra few days but he’ll come back in and he’ll be fine.”

“Jamesie should be okay for Cork.”

A lot of lot of it was how great he did at Sevco but he was spot on when asked would you pay £15 m for Igammane. Answer: I would pay a few million!

He went to say not he was not good technically but a great player.

Great idea about the featuring of Celts of bygone eras on the big screens before matches.

    ———————-

I have felt for a longtime there should be an inhouse media event management of the match day.

Like the tv channels do, a team on the celtic way from lets say 2 hours before the game, interviewing players, ex staff, fans and broadcasting it on big screens inside and out at celtic park, this should include segements with hisotrical games with the opposition and our own history being told.

When we had the legends banners up, I was a little perturbed that often people i was with just didnt know who the players were, I thought they deserved to have their story told.

Maybe Celtic tv already do this for the online, but at the stadium you dont see it.

The bloggers do it already as they say “in the live”

    Cheers Scully.

The overall performance is typical McStay.

Years back I posted about a clip on here from Euro 92.

McStay looked like a player from 25 years in the future who had been transported back in time.

    Same with this game.

The other 21 players, including notable names, are all caught up in kick, rush, snarl, low percentage, win the second ball, headless chicken football.

    McStay, by comparison?

Understand the space, clean passes seen early, change angles, keep possession, move the ball at speed.

    A standout ….. literally !

The chappie who comperes Off the Ball (not Tam Cowan) made a big mistake there (I think). He was saying that he would have loved to have been at the Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 game. Says it wasn’t live on TV. I am sure it was. I was about 10 at the time.

    **********

You’re absolutely right. I watched it on our wee 13 inch black and white set as a 9 year old, primary 5 pupil. I was almost greeting when Eintrecht scored first ( wasn’t aware of Franco’s involvement at the time – don’t think anyone was. Puskas (4) and Di Stefano (3) soon put matters right. It was very rare to have a game televised live in those days. My next televised game was the English cup final the following year – Spurs’ double year. Think it was the first double in the twentieth century. I remember the Leicester full back, Len Chalmers, being injured early on….no subs, of course…so Leicester down to ten men and Bobby Smith scoring not long after his injury. Can’t remember who got their second. .Coming from Bute, certain parts of Rothesay could get BBC Ulster and we piled into one of our friend’s house to watch it. This became an annual outing right through to the late seventies/ early eighties.

  21. Scaniel,

I remember it was regularly reported in the papers that folk would go down the west coast to watch BBC Ulster to watch games like the FA Cup Final.

  27. Gill is another level. Great to see someone else other than Kohli leading the Indians. Pant is impressive too. Tomorrow I’ll be interesting for sure.
