Media welcome Nicolas Kuhn received in Glasgow

369

Como!  Who knew?  You might expect the side who finished 10th in Serie A last season would be a source of players for Celtic (Reggina were 13th when we signed our former right winger Shunsuke Nakamura from them 20 years ago).  Now Como are signing teenagers from Betis for €22m and apparently Nicolas Kuhn for €19m.

This is the world, there’s no point complaining about it.  Como are the plaything of Indonesian owners, who have funded a rise from Siere D (where Reggina now are).  We have seen similar vanity projects playout across Europe.  They seldom end well, but before they burn out, there’s millions to be made for football players.

No one should expect anything other than Nicolas Kuhn making the most of his earning potential.  It is why he came to Celtic in the first place and why Celtic continue to attract players from across the globe to live in Glasgow, protected from harmful sun rays 99% of the year.  This is the world, let’s make the most of it.

It would be remis of me not to mention how some in the old media, followed by many online, treated the news of Nicolas signing for Celtic.  A know-nothing from Austria (billed as an “expert”) was given a platform to explain how “rubbish” the player was.  Celtic have an incredible ability to sell rubbish for €19m.

Whatever the process was that identified and selected Nicolas Kuhn, let’s have more of this “rubbish”.

  1. Celtic40me @ 6:25 pm,

    Exactly, and who can blame him for that – Arne had Kevin de Bruyne’s place for a couple of games but will have to wait his turn.

    Of course Peter Lawwell the Celtic Chairman bases Celtic’s recruitment on potential and not performance.

    Glad we have some smart guys that circumvent that.

  2. Some odd comments the last few days, well to me anyway, about the relevant quality of players at ours and their club.

    Not my style to criticise anyone or get into a big discussion as I’m not able to be on the blog for long periods at a time.

    I totally get the mental damage done to us as a support during the Murray era. The stuff that went on in the late eighties and nineties , a brown paper bag ebt if you like . Then the real thing in the noughties.

    They nearly destroyed us. The peak years of watching football for many ruined. Yet we survived, thrived and then dominated.

    Somehow though a fear of them remains. I don’t get it. What’s the worst that could happen? They might at some point reach parity with us, still looks a distant possibility. Even if it happens sooner , so what, they win the league four or five times out of ten. Why fear that, that’s what happens in every league in the world.

    It’s weird to me that even in this era of absolute dominance some haven’t seemed to enjoy it.

  3. I’d have loved to have seen Raskin on the park wae Broony he wouldnae get a kick of the ball, our players should be ashamed that they made a very ordinary player look decent.

    This is a big season coming up for Engels, he has got to progress from a potentially good player to good one.

    So you hadn’t heard of Nygren until he was linked with Celtic.

    You fall into the trap of many football fans who have zero interest in European football outside the top 5 leagues. How would you know every Swedish player in the Danish league?

    I’ll wager you hadn’t heard of Van Dijk, Lustig, O’Riley, Boruc, Moravcik, Nakamura intil they signed for Celfic.

    Great post.

    When David Murray was ruling the roost in Scotland, he was ably assisted by a sycophantic Scottish media.

    Celtic supporters eventually turned to the internet, led by Paul67 and CQN to get access to the truth.

    Sadly, in 2025 once great Celtic blogs like ACSOM, the Celtic Exchange, 20 Minute Tims and the execrable Trinity Tims spend their time criticising our recruitment policy, their route into attacking the board, even when we sign 4 players before the end of June.

    This constant negativity permeates throughout the Celtic support, as evidenced by the “odd comments” you refer to on CQN.

    Sadly, the new Celtic media have become lazy and are now happy do the SMSM’s job for them.

    Brilliant post.

    Sums it up for me – especially when you remember that in those days the MSM were the only source of news.

    In other words, what they said was gospel and Murray knew it.

    Thankfully, bullshit is bullshit and time proved him to be nothing more than a snake oil salesman.

    At the time , though , waking up to regular headlines of the “Rangers are planning European domination and Murray is ready to fund it” headlines , especially when they were so dominant at home and signing players like Gascoigne and Butcher , was no fun at all.

    As someone who lived through all that bollocks , I will never take this domination for granted.

    I believe the `fear remains` because many Celtic supporters STILL believe the MSSM.

    They will protest that they can make their own minds up but I would challenge that claim.

    We need at least some information before forming an opinion . If that information comes from the MSSM — even second hand –then it is hardly information at all.

    Yes, season tickets sold out, – you can’t argue with the box office.

    Continually holding up Arne Engels and Adam Idah as expensive Mibbees does the debate no service at all, especially now that it’s cherry picking amongst the likes of Jota and Kieran, also signed by BR. No credit for the Nicolas Kuhn massive profit, because they’ll tell you he wasn’t a Brendan signing?

    Brendan Rodgers whoever he signs, will never get as debatable as,

    1. Maik Nawrocki – on loan (293 minutes last season);

    2. Gus Lagerbielke – sold at a loss (0 minutes last season);

    3. Luis Palma – back at the club (267 minutes last season)

    4. Kwon – two seasons on loan; (0 minutes last season);

    5. Marko Tilio – two seasons on loan (0 minutes last season);

    6. Odin Holm – on loan; (24 minutes last season);

    7. Yang – 11 starts in two seasons at the club.

    His successor whoever whenever that is, probably won’t win 11 from 13 available trophies, no matter who is on the Celtic board.

  24. We’re linked with a Dutch central defender. Justin de haas. Left footed. Good height and can jump.

    Sounds good but he has zero pace! What is it with our recruitment team? Just becoz someone can defend well in a low block doesn’t mean they can transition to a team like Celtic! No pace in midfield and now we look to sign players like robin proper. Hope it’s not true! We must do better this window!!

  25. BSR @ 8:49 pm,

    Yes, exactly, the idea that our summer 2023 intake failed as they were left in the stands and not developed is simply nonsense.

    Those players now have had two years with the club, they were asked to show what they can do in training.

    Show it in training then get your opportunity.

    Not getting game time in the first team, you will be loaned out to get game time show what you can do.

    When was the last time a development player got as much training, conditioning and opportunities as Yang? Mikey Johnston is the only one I can think of.

    Yet somehow out of badness it’s our manager that wants to make them poor signings – go figure.

    Like I’ve said, how many of our prospect players that didn’t meet the grade at Celtic, go on and play at the requisite level?

    My one and only example is still Teemu Pukki, the one that got away.

    Time will tell if Maik Nawrocki, Gus Lagerbielke, Luis Palma, Kwon, Marko Tilio, Odin Holm, Yang – ever play at the level and consistency it takes to be a Celtic player.

    Yet, injuries and illness apart, each one of them were given ample opportunity, opportunities a lot of our young bhoys would die for.

    Since then, every single signing we’ve made, has made a deserved contribution to the first team, even those brought in as squad members.

    Interesting to go over the first interviews many of those players made..

    Talking about what an honour it was to be at the Club, how big and globally recognised Celtic were as a football Club, how they realised at Celtic the pressure was different as you were expected to win every game.

    Celtic was a Meritocracy, it was founded as a Meritocracy – hopefully we can go back to those values.

    You are spot on re Raskin. I am well aware he was one we could have had pre Brendan. Hence why I mentioned it. He is a significant part of rangers squad value growth for a longer period than the one we discussed. We could have signed him for sure. Your bitterness against Peter and Mark Lawwell is a bit odd that you feel the need to highlight something negative about them at every turn. You have no idea of what happened for Rangers to sign this guy and why we didn’t.

    As for others suggesting my saying he was a better buy than Engels to be clear I was responding to a poster Maestro saying we had no replacement for Broonie. I brought in Engels comparison gratuitously because the letters decline from the Belgian team / squad has coincided with their Belgians rise. In no way was it meant as a criticism of Brendan R or anyone. Just an unfortunate fact. They got lucky with Raskin. We perhaps less so with our guy. Hopefully the manager can work this development magic I keep hearing about with Engels and hopefully he can find a Broony replacement.

    My fear is partly of them every season since Colin Stein signed for them in 1969 for £100k from Hibs ….. the first pre season cup I ever witnessed them win.

    It is also mostly of ourselves.

    We have a new and as yet not really tested under real pressure, executive leadership team.

    We have a far weaker squad (only my opinion of course but many agree) than any time since Ange arrived. Despite funds being available.

    We have lost at least one and probably more key players in the past 2 windows.

    We have a really tough opening league season until January compared to our rivals run of fixtures.

    We have to qualify for CL via play off.

    We have a manager not yet committed beyond this who manages the support very well and manages his own PR equally well. The manager could quite happily walk at the first hint of a poor start.

    We have a support who are more ‘entitled’ than I have ever known. The cup final silence from our end by comparison to the Aberdeen fans, even when we were winning, was quite something.

    I agree with many that despite 25 years of being well managed and virtual total domestic dominance I think there is a lot of work to do this next 6 weeks before our first qualifier.

    Maybe you think could do better than what Lawwell has done this past 22 years. Maybe you think it’s easy to achieve what our club has done against a cheating opponent in our environment with a brief from the owners the books need to be balanced.

    Such was the task set in 2004. Personally I think the guy has done pretty well. If you could show me a better 22 year period in our history I would love to see it.

    I am critical of the lack of strategic focus in working to move us into a different and more lucrative playing environment or structure. Also not having a full size indoor training pitch. These things aside I would struggle to be too critical of much in the way he has done his job as CEO. As chair he is less involved day to day obviously but I would rather have him in that role than Bankier etc.
