Memorable window but improvements still needed

332

There has never been a deadline day when Celtic have been so well prepared for the remainder of the season.  We raided Japan ahead of the transfer window opening, brought in a young Irish striker and last week added central mid Matt O’Riley from MK Dons.  Today, the squad is depleted by injury and international absence, but if we add no more, it will still be one of our most memorable transfer windows ever.

Getting some of the well-remunerated squad fillers off the payroll would also help (looking at you, Albian and Vasilis).  Both were acquired during lockdown widows, when scouting opportunities were limited.  They are better players than we have seen and will hopefully get the chance to prove their worth elsewhere.

I’m still trying to reconcile what we went through on Saturday.  Added-time goals in two games changed the landscape incredibly.  If we consider Hearts’ missed penalty on Wednesday, the margins of how Celtic have progressed to within two points of the top of the table have never been tighter.

We are in a better place than we have been in months, but we will need to continue to improve if the title is to be won.

That was in reply to an answer extending uk exceptionalism over Scottish history at a time when both England and Scotlands history’s were more confrontational.

This started to end with the union of crowns, which coincidentally meant a resurgence in the racist writings of Gerald of Wales by Edmund Spencer who advised the use of famine and slavery as a way of controlling those rebelling as The union then went onto murder and enslave those parts of the global map in pink, and all the while importing the profits back here to base.

Will be in touch,as thurs may be free.back to grind here.

  2. Hand to mouth again for them

They’re spending so much money getting the cl billions it’s hardly going to be worth it. Stops us though, which is nice

  3. Garngad to Croy on

Time for Dermot and the Board to go ‘All in’ and pull off a big deadline day signing that could secure the League and ensure the Champions League money. I am pretty sure the Huns will try to get at least 1 big deal in (even a loan) as the Champions League is within touching distance for both teams.

  4. Rangers doing what Celtic should be doing – finding that bit of quality and experience to increase chances of success. The 40m pot.

If it works its a master stroke – if it fails, they have player assets to sell to recover the money.

Celtic have had a decent window but once again failed to fill key defensive positions. McCarthy is simply too slow and cumbersome, Taylor is 1st choice and should be back up and we have center back exposure should CCV get injured (Julian has to be high risk give a year out with knee injury).

Good window but not fantastic if we are serious about the title – like I’ve said consistently, Celtic NEVER go that little bit extra when the team needs it.

We have a brilliant manager – we should back him NOW! if they win the league , next year will be even harder!

Not even close. 10m more than a decent run in the Europa league

He’s had one start this season and has been injured since September.

  6. Ramsey wants games so he can play in the World Cup for wales. His injury record meant nobody in the prem was prepared to pay what is a very small fee for a player of his quality

A big gamble on the fitness of someone who’s played just over 100 minutes this season fir a very average Juventus

  7. I think it was WC Fields who had on his tombstone….

“I’d rather be here than in Lithuania”

  8. Don’t know if I’m looking at the right thing but from what I can see online Ramsey has not played competitive football in months. Returning from injury but also doesn’t appear to have been a first pick. Remarkable for a 400k a week player.

Would we be keen on a move like this? If it’s a freebie, you might say what have you got to lose (and you might even try to hijack it!) BUT the data says NO.

  9. I’m referring to Souttar and the polish right back – they are spending money and gambling on currently player tenure at the club. Celtic should look to 1-2 last minute loan deals to add defensive presence!

I don’t know the veracity of the Ramsay story – however let’s not get hung-up on Ibrox methodology, or affordability – it’s their intent that should concern us.

    —-

    Intent ?

We’ve completed 5 permanent signings, all young lads on long term contracts.

It’s deadline day and they’re in for a big name with no sell on and an extensive injury record.

  11. For all Ange has done in this transfer window ,he should have really looked at the goalkeeping position ,so if the funds are there I would purchase another one .

The “intent” I mention, is the intent to win the title and gain automatic entry to the CL. Ibrox haven’t gone in for “long-term’ & sell on value for years – that’s why Patterson was sold without compunction.

“Aye Ready” is shorthand for win at all costs and under any circumstances.

  13. Yes on a goalkeeper but after Barkas moves permanently, think the young keeper Toby is well regarded so he needs to have development chances as well, I think we are light in midfield for the way we play as the effort required to press as they do needs us to make changes or drop the intensity which is not desirable.

Now we have injuries suspensions and international absentees to cope with.

  14. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Latest adventure for Mr Ben today …

Complete with high Viz orange coat and hard hat – a customs inspector?

I wonder what odds the bookies would give me on him pretending to be a rear admiral or some such when he goes to Kiev tomorrow?

  15. not as good as IQV having played in a team with Jimmy Johnstone, I can lay claim to having been on the same pitch as one Gordon Ramsay several times as a young bhoy.

He would come to Port Glasgow stay with his uncle who owned a newsagents in Brown street, and Gordon would come play football with the Highholm street skallywags.

He was good actually, I wonder what became of him.

  16. Some posters on here question if we can rely on James McCarthy based on his injury record, Ramsey…..

  17. whatever way you look at it, getting Aaron Ramsey would be a huge boost to their confidence before Wed (fans included); however, he is not a defender and there lies their issues right now

Some posters on here question if we can rely on James McCarthy based on his injury record, Ramsey

    ———–

I am convinced James Mccarthy had a squeaky clean bill of health. With James’s injury record to give him a 4 year deal at his age would suggest that is the case.

    Anything else would be crazy.

  19. Stebhoy – could ot be argued that Robbie Keane, Roy Keane and Craig Bellamy were all in that category? Some great performances from all of them but what was delivered ultimately?

31 year old wingers who have a history of injuries and haven’t played in months aren’t where I would want to see us investing as we head into the final furlongs of a long race.

We have a plan. They don’t. It’s beginning to show.

  20. Can’t understand why anyone would be concerned about a lack of deadline day signings by Celtic. Ange got the three guys he wanted a month ago, and, we should know by now that Mr P is no panic merchant. We have players to come back from injury and international duty. First team picks. 45 points still to be played for.

No, all the panic is coming from south of the river. They have players who don’t want to be there any longer, and are probably not too bothered about direct CL qualification. Has badge kisser Goldson signed a new one yet ? The Dingwall shift is for Christmas, not forever. As we found out with Eddie, Ajer, and Charlie’s son last season. Bringing in an unfit midfielder on mega spondulicks might excite the meeja and bluenoses, but what will it do to the dressing room ?

  21. Considering the players that we will have missing on Wednesday night, a draw wouldn’t be a bad result.

Us signing four first team ready long term signings this window is intent imo.

I’d rather do things our way.

  23. I hope nobody in the dressing room, coaches, staff or players, are going into this match and thinking “a draw wouldnt be a bad result”

as in, we are ok if we dont manage a win.

why bother going to a match if your ok with a draw, fan or celtic minded pundit.

    that is dangerous thinking.

I suspect Ramsay will only materialise if aribo goes

    Just my opinion

  25. Giakoumakis nearly made it three goals in three games at the weekend, but the Parkhead faithful are not convinced he has got what it takes. For all his goals in Holland he has never played for a big club outside of Greece. Observers say he is not skilled enough. Missing that penalty still probably haunts him at Celtic Park and he does go into Bitton style dazes when he approaches goal. Ange yanked him after 83 minutes but at least he got a good run out and in victory we should remember both Bitton and Giakou for their efforts. Perhaps Giakou hasn’t got into his groove yet. He did only cost 1.5 million and is on a five year contract. I liked his press interviews last week when he spoke of the will to win and you could see confidence and enthusiasm.

  26. I was limited so no meaningful report at present – Gray

In the report, Sue Gray refers to the Met Police’s request that she only make “minimal reference” to the events they are investigating.

Because of that, it means she’s been extremely limited in what she can say, the report says.

    Sue Gray writes:

Quote Message: As a result of the Metropolitan Police’s investigations, and so as not to prejudice the police investigative process, they have told me that it would only be appropriate to make minimal reference to the gatherings on the dates they are investigating.
