Memorable window but improvements still needed

332

There has never been a deadline day when Celtic have been so well prepared for the remainder of the season.  We raided Japan ahead of the transfer window opening, brought in a young Irish striker and last week added central mid Matt O’Riley from MK Dons.  Today, the squad is depleted by injury and international absence, but if we add no more, it will still be one of our most memorable transfer windows ever.

Getting some of the well-remunerated squad fillers off the payroll would also help (looking at you, Albian and Vasilis).  Both were acquired during lockdown widows, when scouting opportunities were limited.  They are better players than we have seen and will hopefully get the chance to prove their worth elsewhere.

I’m still trying to reconcile what we went through on Saturday.  Added-time goals in two games changed the landscape incredibly.  If we consider Hearts’ missed penalty on Wednesday, the margins of how Celtic have progressed to within two points of the top of the table have never been tighter.

We are in a better place than we have been in months, but we will need to continue to improve if the title is to be won.

  1. Forget all the transfer deadline flummery – the fact remains that we are going into the most important game of the season without a proven striker available. Anyone who is not concerned about that, or makes light of it, is ‘whistling in the dark’.

  2. Is DD’s private jet at Tokyo airport just waiting to pick up Maeda after the game tomorrow, would be perfect he could do 30 minutes from the bench give us another with pace against their slow backline?

If Sevco are intent on throwing an ageing sicknote like Ramsey into the fray on Wednesday night then they are even more spooked than I earlier thought. Smacks of desperation at the bigotdome and a sop to the raging hordes.

  9. Not even a team threatened with relegation from the epl and the disaster that would mean were desperate enough to gamble on Ramsey.

They’ve done their first installment of the Patterson cash on a 19 year old and a 31 year old crock who between them have 5 starts this season.

  10. Just for the heck of it, I took a quick look at Ramsay’s stats going all the way back to season 2017 when he was with Arsenal. Appearances and goals include Welsh international games as well as league:

    2017/2018 – 37 appearances, 11 goals

    2018/2019 – 45 appearances , 7 goals.

    2019/2020 – 37 appearances (now at Juventus), 6 goals.

    2020/2021 – 38 appearances, 3 goals.

2021/2022 – 8 appearances (5 for Juve, 3 for Wales), 3 goals (all for Wales).

Make of it what you will. Looks to me like he was getting plenty of games until this season. Cannot imagine he is remotely match fit at the moment even if he is otherwise in good shape. He played 3 league games back at start of season, suggesting he was still in Juve’s plans. Since then, 3 of his last four games have been for Wales. 0n 13 Nov he got two goals against Belearus but hasn’t played since.

Maybe of some value when it comes to moving merchandise, and no doubt he’ll win a couple of MOTM awards at home against the likes of Dundee. At least Defoe was a genuine goal threat, something Ramsay has not been for 4 years.

O’Riley had to wait days for international clearance before he played for us, is Ramsay getting fast tracked here?

    —————————————————————————————————————

Not sure but I’m guessing because O’Riley was a transfer not a loan.

  12. Whilst it’s easy to get sucked in with the hysteria surrounding certain transfers and huge games coming up,it’s worthwhile remembering we have had an excellent transfer window so far, and more importantly minutes in the legs of those first choice players.

I would love us to bring another few game ready players to boost our choices and morale plus take some of the steam from their shite show but I won’t be in despair if not. Win on Wednesday, win the league.

  13. just in 6-0 v dundee i think, and that night he was immense as was another debutante big johan

Lubo’s first game was against Dundee, the day Jock Brown left.

Thanks that was it.i was up and down from London at that time and missed that Dundee game.

  15. He played 3 league games back at start of season, suggesting he was still in Juve’s plans.

He started the first game of the season, picked up an injury after 60 minutes and played another hour over 4 games as a sub. Looks like Allegri took one look at him and didn’t fancy him

Juventus were unhappy that he was able to play 3 games in succession for Wales, because, he said he was able to use his own physio team and just rest between matches, not do any training, but still came back injured. He complained publicly about the training not suiting him and that was that

He can’t play and train, he says himself he needs to rest between games. How that works with two games a week and his general fitness levels, for someone who’s known as a box to box midfielder, is anyones guess.

You can’t expect to not train, be fit, and not pick up niggles

I think he’ll show flashes of quality – he’s very technically gifted but he’ll struggle with the pace of the game and be injured, a lot
