Memorable window but improvements still needed

332

There has never been a deadline day when Celtic have been so well prepared for the remainder of the season.  We raided Japan ahead of the transfer window opening, brought in a young Irish striker and last week added central mid Matt O’Riley from MK Dons.  Today, the squad is depleted by injury and international absence, but if we add no more, it will still be one of our most memorable transfer windows ever.

Getting some of the well-remunerated squad fillers off the payroll would also help (looking at you, Albian and Vasilis).  Both were acquired during lockdown widows, when scouting opportunities were limited.  They are better players than we have seen and will hopefully get the chance to prove their worth elsewhere.

I’m still trying to reconcile what we went through on Saturday.  Added-time goals in two games changed the landscape incredibly.  If we consider Hearts’ missed penalty on Wednesday, the margins of how Celtic have progressed to within two points of the top of the table have never been tighter.

We are in a better place than we have been in months, but we will need to continue to improve if the title is to be won.

if CCV get injured – we have Julian chocolate knees and welsh as cover.

    …….

Did I miss something, on the one hand you praise sevco for signing a player with a long history of injuries and state Jullian has chocolate knees. He has had one bad knee injury. I would like a starting left back.

  2. I am getting the games mixed up.

Lubo did make his debut in a 6-1 win against dundee on the day Jock Brown resigned. celtic park was rocking, in the days when everybody with a ticket turned up. and pre brigaders

Johan made his debut in the 5-1 huns game. a game i missed having been persuaded to go to tfs.

    still raging about it.

  3. SB67 – praising rangers for their new right back and soutter (who they probably will get last minute). They are showing some real intent but of course nothing is guaranteed.

I’m loving celtic at the moment and we are MUCH further ahead than I expected – however , here we are and yet still haven’t found a left back solution or a center back. Even with Julian we lost a lot of goals from crossed balls.

We would be some team if we could add areal threat in that area!

We have 4 centrebacks including welsh and jullian who is just back from a serious injury, not chocolate knees. He gets a bad press cause he, like most all players, makes the occasional mistake. Ajer was generally the centreback who lost his man last season and the season before. I saw a couple of games where jullian struggled but not many. Welsh is developing just fine.

Don’t know about sevco’s business just have to wait and see how I pans out over the course of the season.

I want a leftback a much as the next person but I needs to be a quality addition not a panic buy at the last minute.

I totally ruined Rangers single handedly, insider told me it’s the worst mistake they have ever done.. 4 winning goals in derbies. 8 in total should have been ten !! Signed Flo instead for 12m we all know how well he did for them.

  6. agree – I actually prefer welsh to starfelt btw – CCV has been immense. However , we throw great balls into the 18yrd box and rarely threaten the way Goldson does for them. Giaka and O’riley add some extra height and a powerful center would add to that – hopefully Julien but who knows what he will be like!

i’de feel much better with a strong defensive addition – an definitely not a panic buy , rather an opportunistic one!

  7. We’ve conceded 13 league goals this season. How many from set pieces? How many from crosses? I don’t believe the evidence is there to back your claim Stebhoy. We’ve been defensively very tight and conceding few high value chances according to all the stats guys.

You are right that we don’t threaten enough from set pieces at the other end. We could be much better there and oddly enough I think we are about to play against a team who do struggle with crosses into their box this season. Might have a fiver each on CCV and Starfelt to get the first goal or score anytime on Wednesday.

Left back is an area we could gave strengthened but really, 4 centre backs, 2 right backs who are in good form – I don’t think we are too badly off.

Miss 5-1 game too.. Barney live at SECC was great though!

  9. Talk of Soro going to Holland tonight.

If we’re entering talks about this then I’d assume we’ll have some midfielders back for Wednesday.

    100% correct.

If rightly or wrongly the training and playing required to get your team to the top two of the SPFL takes

a massive toll on young players like Turnbull and Kyogo what is it going to do to a guy who’s had the history of muscle injuries he has?

  12. SFTB,

There was a stamp from behind on Greg Taylor which Euan Anderson ( Ayrshire zombie ) ignored before Nir Bittons dismissal. Unfortunately Nir has a rush of blood too often.

Anderson knew what he was doing.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Crystal Palace boss Simon Jordan spoke of his surprise that Rangers could consider such a target: “The SPFL is alive and kicking between Celtic and Rangers. If Celtic win on Wednesday, they go top of the league at a very significant time of the season.

The bottom line is you wonder how Rangers, with all due respect to them, will want to pay a significant part of that salary.

On paper it looks like a great signing, financially, I would struggle to see why Rangers would want to do it

    ——

Don’t expect to see these comments in any Scottish papers tomorrow 😂

  15. We have had a far superior window than that mob. Some on here bricking it because of one signing.Granted circumstances have taken players out,but its they who will be worrying about,Kyogo,Maeda,Hatate,Jota,O Riley.Just a pity they are not there Wednesday night.

Some talking about an obscure Polish kid. Signed as an emergency back up for Tavernier. That’s it.

The player who worries me is the loan from Man U.A lot of money, and looks tricky and direct.

Nothings changed for me about Wednesday.

  16. Anthony Ralston and Greg Taylor were the reason Nir Bitton was sent off, trying to minimise the effect of their awful mistakes.

  17. Just a quick word on Ramseygate anyone advocating the Stench policy is sound where have you relocated from

    Short memories CSC

  18. This transfer puzzles me.A lot been said about how the salary will be split. Its between Juve paying most,to Juve paying 2\3.Maybe they mean the same, but the SMSM think the latter sounds better. That’s around 140,000 per week for them.So is this the 2.4 million “Loan fee”.And there is no actual fee.

Do they pay the Loan fee and the wages?.Huns will have no intention of buying him in the Summer, unless its agreed. So much of this deal seems extraordinarily strange.

  19. really good sutton and o;neill on 606 , funny but martin is rambling a little, age onset maybe.

however, when asked did he come to celtic for the challenge,

no no, i am a nationalist, my dad told me, you get the chance to go to celtic you take it.

  20. Bricking it? As far as I can see, pretty much everyone is in agreement. The Ramsay signing is pure desperation. It is them screaming for attention from within their kindergarten that they can play with the big boys.

I think a few of us are puzzled as to how they have pulled the deal together as it makes little sense from Juve’s perspective. He was a terrific talent. He is still a player that will occasionally do something special.

But week in week out in the SPFL? Doubt it very much.

One thing that I do predict. The refs will book anyone that looks at him. He will be more protected than Putin on a visit to DC.

  21. Auroraborealis

    Really?.All I have been reading all day,and hearing,was 400,000.

By the way,not a mention of this on my SSN transfer window show. Not even coming up on the bar.

  22. AURORABOREALIS&(

I think its closer to 400k…..175k might be what “rangers”are paying.

  23. Thems only need to guarantee enough quality to always beat the others…………..

the Ref will take care of us…………….we’ve seen that already.

    Huns goin’ all in…………….for wednesday.

  24. Deniabhoy,

Obviously you have not been reading some posts

By the way, don’t know who put it on,but somebody forecast the first foul on the Man U loaned will be a yellow.

Lo and behold.Think it was around the 10- 12 minute mark.

  25. Everyone praising this move for Ramsey on Sky, Boyd is out of breath, surprised at Morrison and Given not highlighting his injury record and lack of games, though Given wants an OF ticket, they thought he should be in the PL, maybe punters are missing something.

  26. JHB on 31st January 2022 5:39 pm

Forget all the transfer deadline flummery – the fact remains that we are going into the most important game of the season without a proven striker available. Anyone who is not concerned about that, or makes light of it, is ‘whistling in the dark’.
