Men against boys: how did that turn out, Graeme?

200

Celtic have played Blackburn Rovers 19 times, 17 friendlies and two very memorable competitive games.  The English side travelled north for the first leg of a Uefa Cup tie, on Halloween 2002.  Manager, Graeme Souness waited until after kick-off before walking out of the tunnel, an indication that he expected a hostile reception.  His players were less intimidated.

Blackburn bossed the game, so much so, that Souness felt comfortable enough to overlook the fact that Henrik Larsson scored the only goal of the game in the 84th minute, to declare the match “Men against boys”.

That was a decent Blackburn side; Champions League winners, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole supplied the cutting edge, with Damien Duff, ex-Rangers Tugay in midfield and a host of solid internationals and Premier League professionals.  If football success was about unconverted chances and unproductive possession, Blackburn won hands down.  Souness was blind to his side’s failure.

Celtic shredded Blackburn in the return two weeks later.  Chris Sutton didn’t mind celebrating his opener on his return to the ground he became an EPL champion at, while Henrik scored a peach to secure the tie 3-0 on aggregate.  The game went out live on terrestrial TV across the UK, allowing Henrik to tell the nation, “We knew we played s### in the first leg.”

We tasted Champions League football for the first time a year earlier, then felt the disappointment of elimination in qualification to Basel.  That win over Blackburn gave us hope that we may be able to remain in Europe at Christmas for the first time since 1979.

Thanks mate,I posted seeing your 12.23,bit hasty maybe never read prev page on ticket. but it is a way of having the control of the seat from the spurs angle.

Scary to think,Spurs will get the seat filled due to tourist/epl market, but it shows you how the game is getting more remote from the normal fan.both them and Arsenal operate in a dif strata from when I lived down there 80s90s.

The m/ship I was meaning would be wider, kids to OAPs Not only attending a match as above but a record of a members relationship with club, recorded and built.

7am alarm just woke me from a nice dream. No, not that kinda dream. I immediately thought – why did I set my alarm for a Saturday morning?

Then I remembered. The Celtic are playing.

I originally posted the seat exchange link for spurs. My mate was a season ticket holder there for years but the cost of the ticket and travel from Biddulph became too expensive. He uses the ticket exchange about once per month and thinks it’s great. Never a problem getting a ticket.

If you look at it from a supporters perspective the chance to see your team without the committment of a ST is great. He doesn’t take any kids so the process for him is simple.

  16. Monty Norman was a season ticket holder at Tottenham Hotspur

    Notta lotta people know that….

  17. TH — ticket sharing back in the day was pretty common.

The people who I knew — it was down to the shortage of tickets rather than cost.

Might be the reason why some of the London clubs are trying to wring the cloth dry regarding season ticket pricing — they have a huge waiting list / demand which is driving up people’s acceptance levels — Zombie stat from a few years ago had the Emirates as the stadium with the biggest matchday income in the world.

£60K seats = big but not the biggest.

Season ticket pricing — make the Laker’s blush.

    Result for the Erse.

Concert ticket pricing — £55 / £75 / £95 plus padded seat pricing on top.

People of a certain vintage can be persuaded to part with the cash.

Finally are TH a bigger club than us?

I have a view but would like to find out other people’s thoughts.

Their membership scheme is something we should look at.

Ticket returns might be the way to push it.

  18. Tim Malone Will Tell on

    CELTIC40ME

Brentford scheme not quite so brutal as Spurs – but who knows, they might get there eventally.

Brentford still issue physical season ticket and actively encourage this to be passed to “friend or family” if you cant attend.

In parallel, they run a £40 annual membership scheme that gives members access to a small pool of member tickets reserved for every home game and also access to the “ticket exchange” where season ticket holders can post ticket availability for a single game.

The season ticket process has two price dimensions. For the season ticket holder, every game is valued the same based on a “straight line” calculation e.g. every games is valued at £25 each.

Simultaneously, the club also categorize games as “A” or “B” depending on the opposition and set a “Market value” for the seat – so perhaps £40 for CatB and £45 for CatA.

If ST holder puts ticket up for sale on the exchange, ST gets £25 credit towards future ticket (or season ticket) purchase – club retains the difference in price £40-£25 = £15.

Any member purchasing a pool ticket or ticket through the exchange either “prints at home” or collects from ticket office.

    It seems reasonable to me.

  19. TMWT @ 10.26

B/ford — interesting take on the whole situation.

I would prefer that any Club profit from such a scheme goes to our charity arm.

Main point seems to be the membership scheme angle to get more people financially attached to the club.

Membership (1) — if you have a season ticket.

Membership (2) — if you pay a fee that gives you access to a ticket exchange scheme.

Membership (3) — take out a CTV subscription.

Membership then get a vote towards a director on the board.

  21. Main Stand Expansion …

    Funding opportunities / possibilities.

Investor bond funding — 640 seats = £91mill of resources.

    Minimum term = 10 years.

  25. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

During a quick scan of Celtic cyberspace I was drawn to a story about a story about a story.

Josip Juranovic was quoted by Spanish media

The Daily Rubbish translated, inserted a lie and published

A Celtic fan website corrected them

Another fan site praised the first one

IMHO – classic example of how modern internet reporting is a self perpetuating waste of time and energy returning almost zero value while pretending to inform.

VideoCelts, The Celtic Star – your core output is far superior to that of the Daily Rubbish.

They lie with every breath and every click of the keyboard

They’re not even journalists any more.

Don’t waste your time tracking and correcting them.

You merely give them attention in front of undiscerning consumers.

Which in turn helps keep them alive.

Not sure the number behind CTV but it will stagnate unless we up the performance levels.

    Pals TV at best.

Is Tottenham Hotspur a bigger club than us. ?

Richer, undoubtedly so, but bigger no.

However we could only dream about building a stadium costing circa one billion GBP. So could 99% of clubs

Where we can learn a lesson though is in its usage.

Spurs host boxing and NFL games. To repeat, We should utilise our stadium more. Our hub is not being used to its full potential.
