Michael Nicholson confirmed as CEO, C-suite expands

77

The best known secret in football was confirmed today as Michael Nicholson became Celtic chief executive officer, a position he carried out as acting CEO since Dominic McKay left the club in September.

Solicitor, Michael jointed the club from Glasgow firm Harper Macleod in 2013, where he acted on behalf of Celtic.  He has been a longstanding season ticket holder and lifelong supporter of the club.  More recently, he joined the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), where he acts as an arbitrator.

I know Michael.  He is an intelligent and passionate Celtic supporter.  He is ambitious for Celtic and will bring a singlemindedness to the job.  We wish him every success in what is an almost impossible job.

The move also sees the role of Chris McKay change.  Chris was previously Finance Director but is now Chief Financial Officer, “with a broader range of responsibilities”.  This is probably more significant than it sounds.  Peter Lawwell’s experience and influence is impossible to recruit and difficult to hand down, even to the sharpest minds.

In making Chris a “Chief”, Celtic have expanded their C-suite.  I expect we will see responsibilities distributed more widely going forward than they were in the past.  Some of us think they could do with a Chief Operating Officer too.

  1. Unfortunately yesterday our lack of squad strength

Especially in forward areas came back to bite us.

We need 4 fit strikers vying for a place in the team.

We only have 2 as I don’t count Ajeti as an option at all.

He’s been largely anonymous for 18 months now.

Abada / MJ / not for me thanks so we really need to

Come up with the answers in January.

As far as corners kicks for are Concerned the severe lack of height in the team makes it almost a waste of time .

We need to address this problem in the team ASAP

  2. our only objective this season imo is to be 1 point ahead of thems and win back the title, playing like last night and it will not happen, ange has to learn quickly as his coaching staff certainly haven’t how to break down 2 banks of 5 all this tippy tappy and one two’s around their box if you don’t have the quality of player to carry it out doesn’t work , why not try sometimes to drive directly into box and force a rash tackle , we are far to predictable in our play and the opposition know it. , we could have swapped our defence for our attack and probably had more success,

  3. Mad Mitch,

Apart from the possible context of fee paying, selective schools, just what is so bad with St Aloysius. Paul McBride attended the college .

Just wondering and using my clairvoyant skills :

Did your family have the money, but you failed the selection examination. 😀😀😀😀😀😀

    Only a thought.

    Cheers and HH.

  4. the long wait is over on

While I wish Michael Nicholson nothing but success for both him personally and us overall,

I personally believe that lawyers should be appointed to legal roles only and not as CEO’s or equivalent.

We have previous experience of this – Jock Brown anyone?

Harper Macleod from whom ML was recruited do not , despite having many no doubt excellent lawyers,

have one as their own CEO.

Theirs comes from an accounting background – https://www.harpermacleod.co.uk/people/detail/martin-darroch/

Time will tell but perhaps that’s who we might have been better recruiting from Harper Macleod, if we could have.

  5. It’s always Bankers, Lawyers or Accountants.

Come the day of subversion and new world order, it will be Welders, Pipefitters and Joiners. 😀😀😀😀

  6. As I’ve previously opined, it’ll take more than Michael Ange & Co to turn this season into a masterpiece.

Our finance team is stronger than our footballing operation.

    Something badly wrong there.

    DoF?

    Head of Recruitment?

    Gaps aplenty

St Al’s for all its good intentions is just an employment club for the sprogs of the grasping middle class.

It’s influence spreads well beyond its abilities — gang within a gang.

Not a great fan but at least its alumni are not slow on letting you know.

    Private education = 30% accent / 30% confidence / 30% connections plus 10% small class sizes.

St Al’s is no different — the uni results don’t lie.

  8. Not interested one jot about Board politics. Will give the guy a chance.Ange sees to like him. That’s the only thing that matter. We will see very shortly if Ange gets his targets.Until then, shut TFU with the moaning.

  9. Selection at private schools is just a racket to get you to put your sprogs in earlier.

Are they still playing that game at St Al’s?

  10. Some hate company boards and executives – just because they do – even those who lead the club to the second most successful prize-winning period in its entire history and the most financially successful sporting entity ever in Scotland.

Imagine what state the club would be in if those who shout from the sidelines had their way. There would be so many knee-jerk fights going on that there would be little time for the football.

All top clubs in the world have had their troubles from time to time, even those with ‘money coming out of their ears’ – e.g. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Inter, Juve, Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham. Some are taken over in US debt-financed deals, some by oil & gas billionaires from Russia to the Middle East and some by hedge-funds. Whatever the make-up there are no boyhood fans, or, real supporters running things. A connection with supporters just doesn’t exist. They would dispose of to the highest bidder ‘at the drop of a hat’, if it suited them.

Closer to home we have seen our main rival brand, humiliated with debt, liquidated, run by spivs, starting again as a new club -even now still ‘shadow-boxing’ with serious cash issues and being dragged through the courts regularly. That rival has won one trophy since 2011.

We have had one blank season and are now winning again. It will take time to rebuild fully.

We wouldn’t exist with the GB, or its nominees running things – does any rational supporter think different?

  11. lets all do the huddle on

In Bankier’s statement he talks of continuity.

is the Continuity PLC not a proscribed organisation?

  12. Nicholson, who was not deemed good enough to get the job earlier in the year is now the best candidate.

What happened to all they cv’s wankier received.

  14. Watched a couple of minutes of the “b” team and noticed a Tall young redhead cf yes TALL,scored a couple of goals and thought why don’t we give this lad a shot nothing else is working through the middle.I don’t know but his name might be Dawson.

  15. In the long bucket list of things to do currently, a boring old-school legal beagle and a shuffling of the deckchairs around the other out of touch white, stale male C-suite custodians. Genuinely WGAF ? Jobs for the bhoys.

Where exactly is the modernising of the club? The outworkings of the review from a year ago? Technical and Sporting Directors, scouting, analytics, recruitment, football philosophy……ach, sure we might get a COO ???

January month now a biggie. Ange’s insistence on numerous occasions to play this slow, slow, wide and cross tactic to no avail is going to bring us more nights like last niigt as the cluggers have us sussed.

Really surprised that you haven’t been given a position in the board reshuffle.

After the way you done a complete reversal on res 12 and your eulogy to the departing Lawwell, your selfless service to the men who sold the 10 deserved better.

Very good point, never considered that!

background noise. Must be early signings or give up.

Turkeybhoy made excellent points about set-pieces earlier.

So important in the modern game. Huns are great at them we are awful.

Great info on crosses from Big Wavy. Utterly disgraceful. Who is working

    on this?

  21. My friends in Celtic,

I’m sure we are all completely versed in vaccinations by now. However I’ll share a personal experience if I may.

I got my booster jag two days ago. Previously I had two AstraZeneca jags. This time I got the Moderna jag. I was told that the different jags protect in different ways and side effects were not uncommon.

I took that advice with a pinch of salt and arranged to watch the game in the pub. Wow, I was completely floored and lay in bed most of the day. I even watched the game in bed.

I am still onboard with the vaccination programme ( For now ) as the best way out of this ” nightmare “, however if you have anything important to do, do not arrange it the day after the booster. Today ii am absolutely fine.

The winter break will be the perfect opportunity to ensure ALL footballers are fully vaccinated.

Its not necessarily a bad thing.

I’ve witnessed that a few times over my career. Its only after the external candidate that was hired arrives that it becomes clear that the internal option was actually better.

No idea if thats the case here though.

  23. The over simplification and easy criticism is inevitable.

Running a multi million pound company is an enormous responsibity and requires you to be the smartest guy in the room .

When you millions of “customers ” are every bit as passionate and engaged on your product, with every decision challenged the weight of responsibility is hard to engage

I wish Michael nothing but good luck and I sincerely hope he is a great success,

  24. The rule of thumb is that you go exterbnal for a CEO when you want to shuft strategy or break from the opast.

The internal promotee is typically a contiunation of the same system.

Anyway, it’s what DD wanted so there’s your rationale – continued ‘OF’ strategy until the EPL decides it needs both Glasgow teams in the premiership…and he collects his moolah off some shady middle eastern arab.

  25. Greenpinata good to hear you are better today.

I normally give staff the day off after their booster just in case.

Some staff are fine some not but they can take a rest day.

  27. Unfortunately for Nicholson a good CEO is only as good as the team he surrounds himself/herself with, he has a corrupt, incompetent board of charlatans around him and he is the next placed figurehead to take the stick away from them, whilst they collude, corrupt and make themselves rich in the background.

    He is Doomed.

To paraphrase Billy Joel, “Paul67 didn´t start the fire”

Those 17 years you refer to, with reference to Paul, includes a generation of domination in Scotland. Even for folks like me, weaned on the first 9 in a row, it has been mightily enjoyable.

    Secondly,

There were a few posts on here recently about a poem from the 1930´s ( I thought it was by Bertold Brecht myself but maybe it´s by someone else) along the lines of, “First they came for the Jews and I did nothing,,….and they came for the ___________and I did nothing etc etc. In our case, if they come for the green brigade, do something. Not only them of course, supporters clubs and podcasters alike who demanded a U turn on the decision to appoint Bernard Higgins. It shows also that protests sometimes work. The nature of policing and the question of safety is paramount to all spectators.

Amazing that we had the smartest guy in the room all along, after choosing someone else 6 months ago.

He also has no independent experience, so anything he has learned is based on those who preceded him (and who are likely still advising him).

It’s an uninspiring, insipid appointment. The Neil Lennon of directorial appointments.
