If you aggregate the nods, winks and rumours around Celtic this week you might be inclined to think we’re in the market for a target-man striker with a few years’ experience under his belt. I agree with the principle that we need a target man and I’m also of the view that short-term deals are not nearly as desirable as permanent contracts, but as we know, it’s too easy to load the club full of squad players who cumulatively cost a lot of money but scarcely trouble the first team.
Hooper, Stokes, Samaras, Bangura, Rasmussen and Murphy are all under contract for next season and we cannot be confident of attracting bids for any of those Neil Lennon might want to move on. If we add a seventh striker, his name better be on the team sheet before Gary Hooper’s. Signing an exotic version of Daryl Murphy would add spice to our week but would only consume scarce resources. I’d rather not.
Co-opting a media partner works in theory. It’s always better to have good relationships with the media than the kind of relationships Celtic perennially have, but what happens when your media partner plays with a straight bat?
Rangers media partner, STV, today report Nigerian trialist, Michael Uchebo, boarded a plane out of Glasgow a few hours after arriving (Michael, they have taken you away….) as the VVV-Venlo striker with 8 career goals to his name had “a poor first impression of” Rangers.
Michael, you clearly have a rubbish strike rate but you’re a remarkably perceptive individual.

Michael Uchebo’s trial at Glasgow Rangers came to an end after just one day, with conflicting reports from the player, his club VV Venlo and Rangers.
The Nigerian arrived in Glasgow on Wednesday hoping for a five-day trial, and took part in his first session at Murray Park on Thursday.
But that was to be his last.
His agent Tony Harris claims the player cut short his trial due to a poor first impression of the club, but Rangers claim manager Ally McCoist was not impressed and will not sanction a move.
“Michael was invited to come over by Ally McCoist,” Harris told STV. “When he got there, McCoist wasn’t there.
“Michael didn’t enjoy his Rangers experience. He didn’t feel at home and wasn’t comfortable.
“The player informed Rangers he didn’t want to return to training. Michael will now look at other options.”
But other reports claim it was McCoist’s decision to turn down the player after one day of training.
And in a further twist, Venlo’s Managing Director Hans Soentjens told reporters the club had reached a verbal agreement for a £1m transfer for the big forward.
“Rangers really really want him.
“We have reached a verbal agreement with them over a price. We are simply awaiting the outcome of a medical before completing the deal.”
Uchebo, who played for Enugu Rangers two seasons ago, currently earns £8000 a week at Venlo and is looking to improve those earnings.

I agree Chris Hoy is world class but in a less competitive field, just as our rowers, sailors, showjumpers, shooters, wrestlers and cricketers are in “softer” and “easier to medal” sports.
It is sometimes a greater achievement to become top 20 rated in a competitive field like Football, Basketball, Boxing, Golf etc; than to be top in a rich man’s sport (sailing, showjumping) or top 3 in a less contested sport (cricket, rowing, some cycling events)
Cavendish’s achievements are probably greater than Hoy’s in my book but they are both world class in 2nd tier events, is the best I can put it. It still takes great dedication to be top and dominant in a competitive-light event like Bubka in pole vaulting. So they can still be might proud of their achievements.
I am proud that wee Audrey Cooper from land locked and bing-surrounded Whitburn managed to become a world ranked Beach Volleyball player and Olympic contestant but she is unheralded in her own country.
