Michael, they have taken you away… from Ibrox

1425

If you aggregate the nods, winks and rumours around Celtic this week you might be inclined to think we’re in the market for a target-man striker with a few years’ experience under his belt.  I agree with the principle that we need a target man and I’m also of the view that short-term deals are not nearly as desirable as permanent contracts, but as we know, it’s too easy to load the club full of squad players who cumulatively cost a lot of money but scarcely trouble the first team.

Hooper, Stokes, Samaras, Bangura, Rasmussen and Murphy are all under contract for next season and we cannot be confident of attracting bids for any of those Neil Lennon might want to move on.  If we add a seventh striker, his name better be on the team sheet before Gary Hooper’s.  Signing an exotic version of Daryl Murphy would add spice to our week but would only consume scarce resources.  I’d rather not.

Co-opting a media partner works in theory.  It’s always better to have good relationships with the media than the kind of relationships Celtic perennially have, but what happens when your media partner plays with a straight bat?

Rangers media partner, STV, today report Nigerian trialist, Michael Uchebo, boarded a plane out of Glasgow a few hours after arriving (Michael, they have taken you away….) as the VVV-Venlo striker with 8 career goals to his name had “a poor first impression of” Rangers.

Michael, you clearly have a rubbish strike rate but you’re a remarkably perceptive individual.

I’m not surprised that the Huns haven’t lost important players during the window yet. I am surprised that we haven’t been able to move on some of our fringe players.

I would like to see some of the better young players go out on loan for games but hope we can shift some of our right back and centre back surplus.

    —–

Morning. I know what you mean with the surplus, but there’s something a bit comforting in knowing there’s plenty in reserve just now, should the inevitable injuries & suspensions kick in. That said, it’s ridiculous that our young Bhoys need to go out on loan to get a taste of regular football because of the lack of reserve league football.

I would maybe let one or two go in the meantime.

May I take this opportunity of apologising profusely to Celtic Quick News for describing the away support as “scumbags” earlier tonight.

I was carried away in my anger at some of the songs and disappointment at the result. I was angry more because, instead of getting behind the team when they most needed their support, the vocal majority turned their backs on the team and instead of Celtic songs and chants, all we heard was the other stuff.

That said, I was completely out of order and again, I apologise for my outburst. No excuses.

Anyway does anybody else think that the appointment of Charlie Richmond to referee the Hibs v Rangers game is suspect?

I think one of the most biased displays of refereeing I have ever seen was by the bold Charlie in a cup tie when Rangers took several attempts to get past Hamilton Accies (I think it was).

Then there was the recent occasion when he was brought out of exile to allow Motherwell’s hackers to boot James Forrest all over the park.

Other than Dallas moving over I don’t think that anything has changed with the Masons in black.

The Celtic boss could make a shock swoop for in-form Caley Thistle winger Johnny Hayes.

Celts are keen to land at least one new signing before the transfer window closes on Tuesday night.

The SPL leaders are eyeing a dramatic swoop for Caley Thistle star Hayes.

The Irishman is out of contract at the end of the season and talks have begun with boss Terry Butcher about a new deal.

But SunSport understands there has been contact from Celtic to alert Hayes about their interest.

That could lead to a deadline-busting swoop for him — although Lennon could wait until the summer and land him for free.

The Parkhead club aren’t the only ones interested in Hayes with a handful of clubs in England keen to take a chance on the 24-year-old.

But Celts-daft Hayes would jump at the chance to join his boyhood heroes.

  12. Morning All, a bit of snow here in Germany and not likely to get above freezing all day. The Polish striker would be a great acquisition if we could get him. Seen him a few times over the last couple of years. He’s a confident player with a great final touch. Scores a good amount of headers too.

I’ll be honest mate i have never seen him play. He knows 1 of my mates & told him 3 weeks ago he hoped to be signing. I was that certain the deal was going to go through that day i posted it on here. My mate reckons he is a great player, too good to be at ICT. Personally i think we should be selling a few midfielders not buying more, especially if he isn’t better than what we have. He also told my mate Rangers had enquired about him a week or 2 before the transfer window opened.

  14. Regarding Hayes, I heard this one a few weeks ago too. He mentioned on Twitter the other day that he was travelling to Glasgow for “a meeting”. Needless to say, young nosy B Giggsy asked him if it was Celtic-related!!

  19. Polish striker Brozek poised for move to Celtic

    HeraldScotland staff

CELTIC last night stole the march on Old Firm rivals Rangers in the pursuit of the loan signing of Pawel Brozek, the Polish striker.

The Trabzonspor player was thought to be in talks with the Ibrox club earlier this week, but Herald Sport understands the 28-year-old is now likely to move to Parkhead. Reports in Poland last night claimed Celtic held talks with Trabzonspor and the player’s representatives on Friday. A Celtic source confirmed Neil Lennon’s interest in the player.

Brozek could now arrive in Glasgow this weekend to have a medical ahead of a proposed six-month loan move, with Celtic having an option to buy. Capped 32 times by Poland, Brozek made his name at Wisla Krakow before joining Trabzonspor in 2011.

Nikica Jelavic, meanwhile, will miss Rangers’ match with Hibernian this afternoon through illness, and the manager Ally McCoist acknowledged that the Croat may have played his last game for the club as speculation heightens over a move away from Ibrox, with West Ham United leading the chase.

“Jelavic has not trained for two days and won’t play due to a virus or a bug,” said McCoist. “The doc saw him on Wednesday night and [yesterday] morning and says he is not well. Medically, Nikica is not fit to play. That’s the truth.

“It’s not ideal if [any potential sale] goes to the death, but I won’t lie to you. I think we all had a wee feeling that might be the case. It’s not ideal, but it’s something I can’t affect, so we need to wait and see. If he does go, I’d hope there are things I could move on. I certainly have targets.”

That documentary on Craig Whyte was a good job, admit it. 26. We’ve Gord to stop lunatics taking over the stadiums

By Hugh Keevins on Jan 15, 12 06:27 AM

There are times when you really miss Gordon Strachan – and now is definitely one of them.

The wee man was on ITV London last weekend pontificating on the subject of racism in football.

He delivered his verdict with the biting accuracy of his “Fans with devil dogs” rant when he worked at Celtic.

The subject was Oldham Athletic’s Tom Adeyemi who was allegedly taunted at Anfield during a FA Cup tie with Liverpool.

Paul Ince sat beside Strachan on the studio couch, either too afraid or too inarticulate to voice an opinion. But Gordon gleefully waded in, referring back for inspiration to his time in the Old Firm’s hate-fuelled atmosphere.

Any person who goes in to a ground and spouts anti-social nonsense about race, creed or colour is defined by Strachan as a moron on entry and a moron on departure. But the extent to which clubs can be held responsible for such sub-human behaviour is highly debatable in Gordon’s eyes. And he’s right. It has taken Hibs’ new boss Pat Fenlon just weeks to make his first complaint to the police about anti-Irish insults that were hurled at him when his team played Cowdenbeath last weekend. But can a team normally watched by two men and a dog be accused of harbouring a sectarian cell of people with a grudge against Irish Catholics? A dimwit, or dimwits, wandered in to Central Park and used the facilities to demonstrate their lack of intelligence and latent feelings of religious prejudice.

Cowdenbeath weren’t the problem, they were just the vehicle used by the passing pond life. Fenlon decided not to pursue the matter after consulting the police and now says there’s not much he can do about Scottish society’s ills. That much is certain since those of us born and brought up here have failed for over a hundred years to find any solution to sectarianism.

But will Cowden chairman Jim Methven now be summoned to Bute House in Edinburgh to meet First Minister Alex Salmond in the wake of this public embarrassment? Of course not.

Is there a fear that Fenlon will get more mindless abuse in copycat attacks? Very likely, and for the same reason that alleged racial abuse aimed at Rangers’ Kyle Bartley on his twitter account last week is being investigated.

There are too many morons and not enough Gordon Strachans.

Scott Allan even used the fear of personal attack as a reason for getting out of Dundee United and Scotland to seek sanctuary in English football, Allan thought his well-documented affection for Rangers might land him in trouble if he joined one of the Old Firm.

The only flaw in that argument is summed up in two words, Dylan McGeouch.

If you can play for Celtic as a kid, move to Rangers then go back to Parkhead without the need to live under the witness protection programme, then Glasgow hasn’t yet been told it is under a state of emergency.

But I’d bring wee Gordon back here in an advisory capacity to help out our police forces and political leaders. Strachan brings a refreshing disdain for mumbo-jumbo to the party and isn’t afraid to out the morons for what they are.

The transfer window reminds us of the extent to which the country’s standards have declined on the park, but there’s no need for acceptable behaviour to vanish too.

Nobody in uniform at Central Park heard what was shouted at Fenlon apparently.

Nobody got there in time to prevent Lennon being attacked by a moron at Tynecastle last season.

Government legislation to criminalise unacceptable behaviour inside football grounds will only work if the law enforcers start enforcing when it’s necessary.

Meantime, well done to Rangers’ Dorin Goian for revealing how his prayers to a Turkish saint, said in a Bucharest monastery, cured him of his back problems.

Strachan might feel medical science would have done more than divine intervention – but he’d defend Goian’s right to express his beliefs without fear of retribution.

And tell the morons where to stick their corrupt brand of theology and their knuckledragging philosophies on life in general.

  27. Philbhoy –

Don’t fret though because by accounts Aluka is going to bring over some of his drinking buddies from Nigeria. There are pub teams out there who are more affluent and dignified than Rangers at the moment.
