Mid-hibernating Zenit for Celtic

281

Celtic will face Zenit St Petersburg on the last 32 of the Europa League in February next year. The first leg will be at Celtic Park on 15 February, three weeks before Zenit’s season resumes after a three-month winter shutdown, with the return leg a week later. They take to the field for the final time before the break tonight.

After going through the nerves of tackling mid-season Scandinavian opponents in the Champions League qualifiers, this draw is encouraging. While Brendan and the players have plenty of work today before our own three week break, they will be encouraged at the prospect of extending our run in Europe into the spring.

We’re happy.

  1. Burgas Hoops, aye, but they’ll probably want to be our bestest friends when they come over here… I bet you won’t catch even the briefest glimpse of a blue, red & white football shirt or scarf anywhere near Glasgow until the Zenit “fans” have all gone back to Russia!

It’s in their DNA………………… hard to explain why they dont like us or any away side for that matter. I’ve a pal in St Pete’s and he’s always said to me dont come here if your club ever draw this Zenit mob. That’ll do for most folk from a guy living there. Ruski’s dont like themselves as a rule ……………….and believe me …………I Know.

  3. Thanks, Burgas

Trying to look at it from a positive angle: I suppose the world would be a duller place if everyone liked us …

    ;-)

  4. The Zenit ‘supporters’ sound like a horrible lot . A quick scan of the news reports reveals Racism and total thuggery.

Best stay safe and relatively warm at home.

  5. Not impressed with this draw.Terrible for the fans.Baltic just does not cover it.Very dodgy home fans

The Russians were hammered by Uefa and found guilty of racist behaviour after displaying a banner praising former Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic during a 2-1 home win over Macedonian side Vardar Skopje.

See what I mean.Keep the GB well away.Apart from that, they are a very good team and we will be lucky to get through.Big bonus for the club is 1st game at home,so should get a very good crowd in.

Awarded ? is that the new buzz word in brit land for “Bought” ? :-)

  9. St Petersburg is closer to Glasgow than Faro in Portugal.

Canny be a 5 hour flight!

    Tough draw though.

  10. This is why I am not to keen that my oldest grandson goes over there. They do not like anything to do with the UK. I bet some of them will be looking for the union Jack flags at our home game, how wrong could they be

Cheers for that Starry, I’ve heard a few stories about Zenit fans over the yrs ? The only time that a teams fans outshamed ( is that a word) them was when a now defunct lot from Glasgow met them in the UEFA final a few yrs back.

You know something is wrong when your fans have a worse rep than Zenits.

That was their firm of course there were also plenty of scarfers, Dads and sons and even a few Mums there to support their team but in my humble opinion if you’re going over there take care, looks like a Metro in and out always places where wee firms gather!!

  15. That’s a tough tie.

As would be any opponent at this stage and certainly not the toughest.

A beautiful city with dour angry people.

Spent two weeks there in 1983 and there was an uneasy air about the place and people who were kept in check by an equally tough police force.

Visited the Hermitage museum which had the largest collection of impressionist art in the world and stood inches away from Rembrandt;s and Van Gogh’s.

The only security was the very stern looking Russian old ladies sitting in a seat in the corner.

I guess the thought of spending time in Siberian salt mines was a great theft deterrent .

It was called Leningrad at that time

  16. Fc Zenit knocked out Real Sociedad 5-2 in agg in there last Europa cup game who sit in 9th place in la liga above Celta Vigo & Real Betis who are 10th & 11th place respectively

I’d expect our home leg to be 8pm with the away leg at 6pm,due to the time difference.

  19. I can’t be the only one thinking that there is a link between the reduction in the number of goal scoring chances we are taking and the reduction in the number of games Leigh Griffiths is starting – can I?

  20. You can be sure Arsenal will get first dibs on KO times, don’t think BT would want us playing at same time

Not quite a full house…..Celtic will play in front of a partially shut stadium when they travel to Russia to face Zenit St Petersburg.

The Russians were hammered by Uefa and found guilty of racist behaviour after displaying a banner praising former Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic during a 2-1 home win over Macedonian side Vardar Skopje.

*they also caused the Manchester riot or so the smsm would have you believe.

  22. What was the name of that rather classy , English midfielder Aberdeen had on loan last year?

    Bugging me.

    JJ

  23. I assume Lenny will not get slaughtered by the SMSM for his comments after the game yesterday? I assume he will if he says the same things after the game against Sevco? I also assume that Brendan said nothing about the foul (penalty) which McGregor should have had after a couple of minutes, the ‘offside’ given against Edouard when in his own half with a Hibs player behind him, McGinn fouling Broony 5 or 6 times with not even a severe finger wagging from the ref never mind a yellow card. Why not Brendan? You have class and while I like Lenny talk like that is poor as every manager after every game could say the same.

  24. Gene- i think they will try and avoid both games at same time, when 2 time slots are available, you see a lot of games over there kicking off early in Euro tournaments too HH

  25. For the record, Celtic have played 6 previous matches against Russian opposition in UEFA competition.

In 2007 Celtic met Spartak Moscow, drawing 1-1 home and away, with Celtic progressing to the CL group stage after a penalty shoot-out.

In 2009 Celtic lost 0-1 at home to Dynamo Moscow in before winning the away leg 2-0 to qualify for the final CL Play-Off round.

In 2012 Celtic beat Spartak Moscow home (2-1) and away (3-2) in the CL group stage, to seal qualification for the last 16 of UEFA’s premier competition.

Celtic’s record to date against teams from Russia reads W3 D2 L1.
