Mid-hibernating Zenit for Celtic

281

Celtic will face Zenit St Petersburg on the last 32 of the Europa League in February next year. The first leg will be at Celtic Park on 15 February, three weeks before Zenit’s season resumes after a three-month winter shutdown, with the return leg a week later. They take to the field for the final time before the break tonight.

After going through the nerves of tackling mid-season Scandinavian opponents in the Champions League qualifiers, this draw is encouraging. While Brendan and the players have plenty of work today before our own three week break, they will be encouraged at the prospect of extending our run in Europe into the spring.

We’re happy.

  1. That read like the funds which were sourced by Orlit prevented administration in 2012, I am confused.

Thanks, I’m can’t claim it as my own though.

I read it somewhere before and like you it amused me, so it stuck in my head.

Good draw for us I think. Was in St Petersburg last year. Amazing city but various folk just shook their heads when I asked about the Zenit fans. They have a very, very nasty element by the sound of it, and that was fellow St Petersburgians (?) telling me that.

However, it’s only about 2 and a bit hours from Oslo, so…

I can’t stand Leckie, but if he’s coming out with stuff like that in The Sun, then the hyenas really have started to eat one another.

  5. Hope Brendan had the team practicing throw-ins today. We don’t seem to give the thrower many options.

  7. Watched one of those EPL classics on SKY earlier today, Crystal Palace 3-3 v Liverpool. Brendan was the Manager at the time, it was the infamous game at the end of the season when Liverpool were 3-0 up and threw it away.

The first Palace goal was a deflected shot from 30 yards. At the point in such a crucial game you would think Liverpool would shut the game down but that’s not that Brendan way. The second Palace goal came from a Liverpool corner, Palace broke and ended up 3v3. The question being how does a team going for the League and 3-1 up away from home end up 3v3 at the back? Goal 3 came from a long ball through the middle.

Anyway my point is I drew parallels between that and yesterday. We were in control at 2-0 but even at 2–1 we were still pretty open and overcommitted. I’d love to sit down with Brendan for 10 minutes and ask him what his thinking is in these situations. I suspect he backs his team to score more goals than the opponent but it’s the loss of momentum in these situations that makes it difficult.

One Malloy, sad to hear of the passing of your friend. As a brother of a serving firefighter, i know there will be huge support from the professional community in which the young man worked. Very sad news and thoughts and prayers with the family and friends.

Surely the law of averages and Zenit on their winter break (longer than us) a wee home win could be a shout

As long as i have watched Celtic, throw ins have been hopeless…:)

  14. I was wondering how much of a handicap the winter break was to Russian teams.

Here is a sample of their progress over recent years in Europa League last 32:-

2010/11- In February both Spartak and Zenit won against Swiss teams but Kazan went out to Twente. in the last 16 in March, Twente knocked out Zenit and Porto beat Spartak.

2011/12- Lokomotiv lost on away goals to Bilbao and Kazan lost narrowly home and away to Olympiakos

2012/13- Zenit beat Liverpool on away goals, Kazan beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 on agg, and Angi Machakalaka beat Hannover 4-2 on agg. Anzhi & Zenit lost narrowly in the last 16 but Kazan got through to the quarters only to lose 5:4 to Chelsea on agg.

2013/14- Kazan lost to Betis, and Anzhi beat Genk before losing to AZ by 1:0 on agg in the last 16.

2014/15- Dynamo Moscow beat Anderlecht, and Zenit beat PSV. In the last 16 Dynamo lost to Napoli but Zenit beat Torino before losing to Seville in the quarters.

2015/16- Lokomotiv lost to Fenerbache and Krasnodar lost to Sparta Prague.

2016/17- Zenit lost to Anderlecht on away goals, Rostov gubbed Sparta prague and Krasnodar beat Fenerbache. In the last 16 Celta Vigo gubbed Krasnodar and Rostov lost narrowly to Man U.

By my reckoning that means, in Europa last 32 ties, Russian teams played 16 opposition teams winning 10 times and getting knocked out only on six occasions. It was usually a good team that knocked them out and they took a few big scalps themselves along the way.

Zenit themselves have a record of winning 3 of the 4 last 32 ties they played in, losing only on away goals.

The evidence does not suggest that they have a very dificult handicap to overcome (lack of match practice is easily rectified and, on the plus side, injuries have time to recover).

For our home tie, the bookies have us as 7/4 favourites with Zenit at 9/5. To win the Europa, Zenit are 25/1 (joint 8th favourite) and we are available at 100/1 (joint 20th favourite out of 32)

Thanks for that information. I was wondering if there was any evidence to support the view re Winter shut down effect. Your facts reinforce what I had suspected. We have a chance of progress but Zenit are favourites. Unless, of course, we come out of january even stronger than we go into it.

One of the difficulties in scoring from corners is the apparent suspension of the Rule against holding as the ball is delivered into the box.

  25. Throw ins is it. Does my nut in. We turn the most simple of issues into a long drawn out deep thinking progress. For example, is there a rule I don’t know about stipulating that only full backs may take throw in? The sole, single objective should just be to get the ball back in play at anyone’s feet as quickly as possible. Therefore, as soon as it’s clear that a ball is going out on the side – 1. the nearerst player: run and get the ball, 2. the 2nd and 3rd nearest players – find a bit of space ANYWHERE, even 25 yards back and shout for the early throw. 3. Pass it 2 or 3 times, get back into our shape, run up the park and shoot for goal. Simples.

Did Roy Aitken phwannee aboot at Hampden Park in the Joe Miller final. Did he think “erm, Chriss Morris is the right back therefore I must really leave it to him”? Naw, he grabbed the ball, didn’t even look but threw it to Peter Grant, Peter to Joe – Goal. Cup won.

  26. See awe this stuff aboot hun court cases…..

ah mean, they’ve been fun oot in the Supreme Court, a 0-5 tanking…..

and guess whit happened tae thum ?

    Nothin, Zilch, Nada, Hee Haw…..

Rainjurs will git away wi murder, like they have done for 150 years, litteraly.

Only Cellic PLC are capable of hammering the widdin stake through the cheating hun monsters heart.

    But,…….they wulny.

If, as some on here believe, that Rangers FC died, why then, did Celtic PLC rubber stamp the same club lie, by agreeing to the £49 Old Firm match ticket pricing structure, for games against a new club ?

And, even worse than that, why did Celtic supporters go along wi that pricing structure ?

Talk about, deserving what you get!

Because, Cellic PLC know that, when Rainjurs FC urny aboot, Cellic Park will be hauf empty.

When the huns were oot the league for five years, Cellic Park wiz hauf empty, due to apathy.

Yeah, 50 odd k of season tickets might have been sold, but, honestly, how many times were those seats filled ?

    The worst examples…..

Playing Aberdeen FC at Cellic Park in the SC, and being dismissed withoot as much as a whimper, and the dismal dismissal at home from Morton, and the top half of the stadium was closed, for both those games.

Europa League games wi the top half of the stadium closed.

    Apathy emptied those seats.

Apathy, Lawwells puppet managers, and their pishy plastic roar efter the gemme, and a pishy product on the pitch, aye it was a product that won the Scottish pub league, but, so what ?

And, the fans knowledge that, Neil Lennon had walked oot because, Lawwell wanted to add him to the growing list of, Confidentiality Claused Puppet Managers, even after the PLC board had flung Neil Lennon under a bus, after NFL had been done up like a kipper, after the ‘Shame Game’ , it didny seem like a grand old club to some of us.

The last puppet manager, RD, was eliminated from the SCSF, by a Rainjurs team, playing in a league below us. This proved too much for, Cellic’s slippery PLC board, who knew that, the puppet manager had to be replaced by a real manager, and, there was the Res:12 issues about to rage from under the surface.

So, a fans rebellion was about to rage onto the scene, the puppet manager infliction had to be seriously dealt with, Rainjurs were about to re-enter the top league along wi us so, Cellic PLC had to answer the call, but, instead, they introduced,a fudge in the shape of Brendan Rodgers, the slayer of Scoattish pub teams.

Or was it a, master stroke ?

    It filled the park √

It got the PLC aff wi the same club issue √

The PLC agreed the £49 ticket, and got away with it √

It got the PLC away wi paying scant regard to Res:12 √

So, is Brendan Rodgers a, PLC master stroke, or, a PLC fudge ?

    Put it this wye,…….

If, Brendan knew how to defeat big teams, then he himself would be at a big team.

All of the above will get me kicking, I know, but, is that the point ?

    Anywye,…….HH

    …….oot.
