Midfield fight, CSA article and Football Memories

I had a look at the story on the official site this morning about a compilation CD with various versions of the Celtic Song being released.  After the initial pleasure of seeing Emilio Izaguirre and Scott Brown on their feet unaided, what struck me most was the apparent body mass of the two players we would normally consider our midfield enforcers, Scott and Beram Kayal.

Against Paddy McCourt, Joe Ledley and Emilio, not to mention men of considerable bulk, like Charlie Mulgrew, they are comparatively svelte and diminutive.  The central midfield role is about mobility and football-intelligence more than anything else.  How you use your weight against an opponent is as important as having the weight to begin with, but when the margins between winning and not winning are so tight, getting the physical balance right is important.

I don’t think I’ve been happy with a Celtic 4-4-2 line-up for years but playing Scott, Beram and a couple of wingers across midfield feels like an invitation for more limited opponents to bully this area, something the Highlanders did very effectively the last time we visited Inverness.

After mentioning tomorrow’s Fans Against Criminalisation meeting in yesterday’s blog I read Joe O’Rourke’s item on the Supporters’ Association site on the same subject with a mixture of horror and foreboding.  The First Minister would be well advised to quickly reign-in whatever loose cannons he has roaming the corridors of power.  Well done to Joe for bringing this to the attention of a wider audience.

The guys from the Alzheimer’s charity, FootballMemories, org.uk asked me to bring their site to your attention.  They work with Alzheimer patients, using the universal platform football provides us all, to engage and invoke recollections.  The site has lots of great Celtic stories, take a look and add your own.

De, de-de de de, de, de-de, de de, de de…

There was a home game this season (ICT I think)where Dan got criticised for being weak with the ball over the top ,even though he recovered in all instances .

To be fair there was nothing he could do regards the ball being played over the top but the fact that when it did he dealt with meant nothing to the LL ,cue the ball being played over the top by our next few opponents .

IMO with DAN not being blessed with great pace and Forster never coming of his line it was not hard to see we could be exposed ,you can’t make dan faster so Forster has to be quicker to close the ball down when it comes over the top .

    hail hail

  2. Lots of them Stricklee luvvies the night.

Re the excellent ditty FMUTC – we had the pleasure of playing that at a wedding for an Irishman at RAF Lossiemouth who was based there. Those that knew it (and there were many) enjoyed it very much.

A great wee song to pull out of the hat for a mixed crowd in Scotland as those that know it, very much enjoy it. Those that don’t know it love the tune, but wish they knew what the lyrics meant :)

    BMCUW,

Re Stevie Nicks – used to go into John Menzies record section every Saturday in the 80s just to get another look at her album cover.

Heard a lot of huns mentioning that big Jock knew…

    Here is ma thoughts.

Of course big Jock knew, he knew the following:

    1) Celtic are the most welcoming club (by the people who own it, ie the fans)!

    2) Celtic and it’s fans face an uphill struggle just to be on equal ground with the rest!

    3) He could spot a world class player a mile aff!

    4) He could spot a mason a mile aff!

    5) He knew the battle that lay ahead with regards to the:

    SFA

    Bigots

    Anti anything but WASP’s

    6) How to make football beautiful

    7) How the fans elevate this game above any sport (“football without the fans is nothing”)

Tell all the fecking hun jokers that is what big Jock knew and don’t you forget it!!!!!!!!!

Only a coward challenges a man after he has died!

    Back tae lurkdom bhoyos

Celtic and Albion Rovers onwards and upwards ye haaaaaaaaaaa……….!

  5. BT ouch!

I think he’s coming down to Blackpool en route to driving down to the south coast, if he does I’ll go into B’pool to meet him and introduce him to the south shore rebels (St Stivs uncle Dunky), will give him something for his CSC’s charity do innaw (just thought about that as I was typing.

  6. From reuters.com (also check out BRT&H on p.7)

Why has Nick Train bought a 6% stake in Celtic football club?

On the pitch Celtic Football Club has an illustrious history but off the field it has had its fair share of problems. The Glasgow-based club has 42 league championship titles to its name, alongside 35 Scottish Cup victories and has also lifted the European Cup.

However, off the field, the fortunes of Celtic Plc couldn’t be more different. Over the 12 months to the end of June the popular Glasgow side posted a £9.2 million slide in revenue.

Although the financial fortunes of football clubs often swing in time with their squad’s performance, during the season Neil Lennon’s team added to its haul of silverware with both league and cup wins.

However Nick Train, the respected founder of Lindsell Train and manager of the Finsbury Growth Trust, believes that the club can considerably add to its value if it is eventually sold, making it worth of a 6% position spread across his client and trust holdings.

‘The stock market value of Celtic is about £35 million. If you look at any football club that has changed hands over the last two years, all have changed hands at a value way more than £30 million,’ Train explained. ‘We think that one day, given the history, the passionate support, Celtic will be worth more than £30 million to £40 million.’

Moreover, the football club’s franchise is one that is known around the globe, thanks largely to the strong ancestral ties between Scotland and America and expats staying in touch with their sporting roots via club channel, Celtic TV.

Train told Wealth Manager that sports rights are particularly lucrative. ‘ When you look at the media industry what’s most valuable is the thing that brings a large number of people together at the same time, therefore sports is extremely valuable to broadcasters.’ Train said.

  7. Did we really need another has been like Mr Zenden at Celtic, no regrets to see him ride off into the sunset. Surely we can do better than this after the non event of the Swede Freddie L.

Starting to get excited as the countdown to the ROI’s big Euro qualifier draws closer. Who will partner Robbie Keane up front , Stoke City’s Jonathan Walters or West Brom’s Simon Cox. Hard to decide, but I fancy Walters.

The Republic are odds on favourites to make next summer’s finals and hopefully Anthony Stokes can continue to show good form and get into Trapattoni’s squad.

If the Republic fail to beat the Estonians then what will that tell us about the EPL as the whole squad (Aiden in Russia) ply their talents in the mid to lower regions of the so-called best league in the world. Under Trapattoni the ROI are unbeaten away from home in competition since 2007.

Hopefully things continue that way to-night.

  9. Sorry to break the blog bhoys but i thought this would perhaps interest a few of you.

Mark Hirst is at this moment on a celtic forum giving his views.

Here is what he say’s in relation to the allegations he has made towards Grahame:

    Posted Today, 07:18 PM

I believe Grahame’s backing of the Bill only happened after the Catholic Church came out strongly against the Bill. Remember she had initially been hostile to it, calling for a sunset clause. Same pattern happened with Margos End of Life Choices Bill which she was at the start opposed to, but then backed again after the Catholic church came out strongly against.

As for MacAskill, well you could have heard that chanting in Wick! MacAskill hears what he wants to hear. Today he has come out backing Grahame and calling for my allegations to be treated with the “contempt they deserve”. Strange position to take when he hasn’t seen the evidence!

There are a few well known Rangers supporters working as Special Advisers to Ministers.

When I was working with Craig Brown on the “No to Team GB Campaign” I issued a release attacking the SFA, specifically Gordon Smith and George Peats apparent softening on SFA objections to this. Both Peat and Smith were/are known Rangers supporters. One ministerial Special Adviser emailed me in strong terms saying there was an instruction from the First Minister that the SFA and Smith and Peat in particular should not be criticised. I wondered if they were worried they might lose their batch of complimentary ministerial seats at major games. I was told “You’re basically saying they are unionist c**ts” in the press release that went out… Well, that’s not really for me to say! Others will have their own opinions!

MacAskill would be well advised to stay out of this, as would the rest of the SNP. My target, which I believe is a legitimate one, is Christine Grahame.

There is a great deal of additional information I have, not related to the sectarian issue, that I am certain the Party would not be revealled… If they have any sense left, they will drop this unnecessary Bill, let Grahame face the music herself and we can all get on with our lives… Minus one less sectarian MSP!

  10. His reply to a question on why did he not come out with this before he was sacked:

For the record, I did inform the SNP NEC several months before my dismissal and have emails to prove that – now with the investigating authorities. I also notified the SNP Chief Exec of these issues last month and before the story broke, but no reply from either…

Councillor Terry Kelly is a lunatic and his comments on his blog three years ago is also factually incorrect. I was not sacked by Sandra White but resigned after she lied about the circumstances in which that press release went out. After I resigned I published the email from her showing she had authorised it. A fact Kelly overlooks. If Kelly had taken the time to check he would know I have been actively involved in promoting the peace process in Ireland for over a decade. He’s a complete prat.
