Midfield fight, CSA article and Football Memories

I had a look at the story on the official site this morning about a compilation CD with various versions of the Celtic Song being released.  After the initial pleasure of seeing Emilio Izaguirre and Scott Brown on their feet unaided, what struck me most was the apparent body mass of the two players we would normally consider our midfield enforcers, Scott and Beram Kayal.

Against Paddy McCourt, Joe Ledley and Emilio, not to mention men of considerable bulk, like Charlie Mulgrew, they are comparatively svelte and diminutive.  The central midfield role is about mobility and football-intelligence more than anything else.  How you use your weight against an opponent is as important as having the weight to begin with, but when the margins between winning and not winning are so tight, getting the physical balance right is important.

I don’t think I’ve been happy with a Celtic 4-4-2 line-up for years but playing Scott, Beram and a couple of wingers across midfield feels like an invitation for more limited opponents to bully this area, something the Highlanders did very effectively the last time we visited Inverness.

After mentioning tomorrow’s Fans Against Criminalisation meeting in yesterday’s blog I read Joe O’Rourke’s item on the Supporters’ Association site on the same subject with a mixture of horror and foreboding.  The First Minister would be well advised to quickly reign-in whatever loose cannons he has roaming the corridors of power.  Well done to Joe for bringing this to the attention of a wider audience.

The guys from the Alzheimer’s charity, FootballMemories, org.uk asked me to bring their site to your attention.  They work with Alzheimer patients, using the universal platform football provides us all, to engage and invoke recollections.  The site has lots of great Celtic stories, take a look and add your own.

Thanks a lot mate, your words are appreciated.

I am better than some tonight and for that I am thankful. This is my first night without my wife of 22 years – I only hope she is feeling a tiny bit of what I am feeling.

This ship (CQN) and the people who sail on her are special – I am humbled by the support I have had, in fact I am lost for words.

    Hail Hail

Of to bed – promised my daughter I wouldn’t drown my sorrows.

Geez, and the old traditions haven’t died, eh? Hope the huns don’t pick up on that. Dread to think what they’d do. Whytey will be investing £500 in a 4Metre banner with Haig’s coupon on it as we speak.

I’ll give you some of those, but a quick reminder that those government ministers (Charlie Haughy and Neil Blaney) and Capt Kelly were prosecuted for their actions by the same government that had, secretly, condoned their actions. Proud of that?

Sure the government took the RUC to court, not the Brit army nor Brit government and won the case. Good for them…but it didn’t stop the state sanctioned killings, detentions and diplock courts. In fact, the Irish government brought in their own “trial without jury” system with the Special Criminal Courts. Very democratic.

And yes, the good people of Ireland took their revenge on the Brit embassy….in the ’70s. Anything since?

Are you proud that during the hunger strikes that the gardai were allowed to take their numbers off their uniforms as they batoned everyone in sight including pregnant women, nuns, TV crews and reporters so much so the only way they could get protect themselves was to run into foreign embassies?

So the goodwill from those of the 26 counties to their own people in the 6 counties disappeared because a few hundred joined the provos to try protect themselves? Really?

Look, WITS I am not in the mood to have a major debate on here about how the south disappeared up their own ar$eholes and forgot how they got their own freedom at the expense of the north…it’ll bore the rest on here to tears.

Suffice to say, well done to the RoI football team for winning the game today.

  9. Morning all, just a quick look in on my phone. Not been on for a while, been a busy few weeks and also knackered my knee into the bargain which has meant me having to frustratingly adjust to a less mobile lifestyle. But hey nothing when I read about recent events for Kitalba, Spongebhoy and some other friends here in EK who are dealing with some real difficult times in their lives. My thoughts and prayers are with them and their families! For those regular Friday nite music followers, I will be back soon with my usual eclectic mix of Sting and various Celtic vibed music from the 80’s etc. For now, God bless to you and yours, jtsTICks. Ps, I note that my good friend Jobo B, aka Judith Chalmers is on yet another foreign holiday! For info in his absence, the weather looks good this next few days! Well in EK anyway. Hail hail

It’s best not to judge anyone in history in this propagated world, until we’ve read the accounts of at least 100 witnesses, and, ideally, saw it for ourselves as well. imo.

what about the 4000 deaths that occurred during the rising through the war of independence to the end of the civil war. history books record nearly 4000!!!!! nearly 3 times the number of deaths during the most recent period of conflict in Ireland that can be attributable to the PIRA.

can you explain how this is acceptable???

petec, I am not a religious man but I am not a dis-believer, if that makes sense. In fact, I admire people who have faith. However, I have learnt over the past few days that there are some very, very special people amongst us.

    Yes fair enough

Haughey and co were charged (and were acquited and carried shoulder high out of court)

Apart from invading the north there was not much more they could have done at the time.

The Irish Govt did prosecute the RUC they prosecuted the British Govt

Yes by the time of the hunger strikes the pendulum had swung so far that the protesters were battered by the Garda (terrible)

But and this is the big but

So the goodwill from those of the 26 counties to their own people in the 6 counties disappeared because a few hundred joined the provos to try protect themselves? Really?

No the goodwill did not disappear because of that version of history

It was because of the mass slaughter of civilians by the PIRA

  18. What is the Stars @ 01:07

I know, but i wouldn’t walk into a pub in Eire and jump into the midst of a similar discussion (unless i was there to order my 16th pint) :)

It’s an emotive subject indeed, and upsets me when i see pals debating heatedly over it to the point of falling out. When that happens, Churchill is being proven right imo, and the British Establishment are still winning.

Vic Ajax needs to step in here now :)

  19. Margaret McGill on

Some interesting discussions earlier about the Celts.

No one really knows who the Celts were. Its lost in history.

They had no written language and all we have is written in stone .Literally.

    Whatever fragments are left.

One of the best examples in Scotland is in Fowlis Wester neat Crieff.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8twvrLy7SA

I visited this church in 2006. Awe inspiring stuff.

There is an old Church there where the dug out a stone from the wall in ~1936.

It was built into the wall in the 11th century in some Christian pagan destruction ritual.

A practice that destroyed much information about any of our ancient ancestry.

The stone itself is from 300 BC approx. Its pristine.

Its considered one of the best links to Celtic history.

The Victorians adopted the ancient Greek “Keltoi” meaning western people to describe Celts.

The Greeks themselves probably got the word from traveling Celts themselves.

From that the upper 19thC British classes spelled it Kelts to differentiate from Celts ( with a soft “s” sound) that the working classes in Scotland and Ireland called themselves.

One of the modern tragedies of infected hunnery today in Scotland and Norn Ireland is that this ancient Celtic link between the periphery of peoples of North Western Europe is now despised.

“It was because of the mass slaughter of civilians by the PIRA ”

history shows that the vast majority of civilian deaths atrtibutable to PIRA is 30%.???? i.e the vast majority of casualities were in fact British security force personnel.

of course a Dubliner would know.

Aye,. don’t know where it came from. Just got an urge to hear some of their songs. Still listening.

The first album of theirs for me was Disintegration in 1988 or thereabouts. Played it on the turntable non-stop for 10 weeks :) Then when the internet came along, realised they had a few more songs :)

Please start reading the Bible My Good man, that will empower you more than ANYTHING ever could.

Stick strictly to the New Testament, if you are new to it and Let the Lords Love For Everyones Mistakes Engulf YOU especially, and that will have the Greater impact on Your Wonderful Kids in the long run and I know that you are thinking mainly about them, it was obvious in your initial post.

    God Bless.
