Midfield protection

930

While Neil Lennon’s mind will be more engaged with preparations for next season than SPL results between now and then he will be a bit alarmed at how porous his midfield has been recently. Celtic have been leaking goals at the back in an alarming manner but the cover from midfield has contributed most to the problem.

Injuries have been disruptive but it’s surprising that the team shape has not been maintained, irrespective of who is playing.

I see the top manager is spouting off again today:

The Rangers manager said: “It is incredible. The fact there are no Rangers players in the national team does not help either, I do not care what anyone says. Where our club is at the moment does not help the national team.”

Well – first of all they wanted to jump two divisions for the good of the wee teams. Now they want into a bigger SPL for the good of the national team. Is there no end to the selflessness of this club? Absolutely heartwarming…….

The team is set up to defend and counter attack.

In domestic duties lets have the team set up in a more attack minded line up. Starting with McGeouch on the right wing and Rogic in the middle with only 1 sitting midfielder.

We have better players than any other team in the SPL, yet we are set out to contain the opposition first rather than attack them.’

We tried that lineup at Motherwell last month. We were outnumbered and out kicked in midfield.

Neil has to strike a balance between attacking and defensive players, something that’s giving him problems just now.

Ideally I’d like to see Forrest and Samaras wide of a central striker, with Rogic supporting. Would stretch opposition teams, while still providing protection to our defence.

  17. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Evening all,

Love the site Paul but blaming the midfield for the loss of goals by this Celtic team is, IMHO, resorting to cliche.

Defensive solidity is dependent on the whole unit (and individuals within it) doing a job. Its really quite simple.

    1) Defend from the front. Strikers chase down balls. Don’t allow defenders time to make passes. (Celtic rating 4/10)

    2) Midfielders form a shield that moves from side to side or back and forth. (5/10)

    3) The back four move in a line and utilise the invisible extra man called the offside trap. This allows the defence to control the situation even when the other team has the ball.

    (1/10)

PS – having a centre back that leaves a big hole in the defensive line by dropping back toward our goal like Lance Corporal Jones shouting “Don’t Panic” has no place in modern football. Please take note Kelvin and Charlie.

    4) If the 3 above fail – a proper defender should step up and think “Right. Danger. Time to do my job” and deal with the situation on his own. (2/10)

What if steps 1-4 above have been well executed but the goalie still gets called upon?

Then the keeper steps up to the mark and gets ready to earn his money – Chances are the striker will realise the scarcity of the opportunity, panic and miss. (FF 7/10)

    =====================

    Very interesting post.

I follow baseball (Redsox; how’d you Yankees like that 8-2 pounding yesterday? ;p) and note that the Dodgers (still belong to Brooklyn!) this season have become the highest spending franchise in MLB history as they chase the 2013 World Series. Your old buddy must have been full of fascinating insights and anecdotes.

On that note – anyone wanting to see THE greatest sporting documentary series ever made should track down ‘Ken Burns Baseball’ (11 parts, around 25 hours viewing) which charts the story of the game from inception with remarkable archive footage and explains above all others just why baseball is THE American sport, so interwoven with society and cultural history as it is.

You’ll have a new respect for the sport and its definitive methods of player selection and development, its farm systems and feeder teams – a taste of which some of you will have had on here over the past 12 months since Paul67 highlighted the ‘Moneyball’ methods from the great book written about the Oakland Athletics triumph in player analysis; football is slowly learning from it but we could do with adopting a hell of a lot more of baseball’s methods, particularly the player professionalism and discipline required to cope with a relentless 162-game regular season.

Motherwell away was a game we dominated possession wise but lost due to individual mistakes from Izzy + Ambrose. Our forward play improved significantly as soon as Hooper appeared alongside Sammi.

I also remember Paddy coming on as sub at Fir Park in Nov 11 and tearing them a new one. That sparked our unbeaten run to the top of the league.

The football we are playing now will not bring the missing fans back next season.

  25. So the SPL are to try and claw back 500k legal costs from either deadco or nearly deadco, nobody appears to know which,
