Midtjylland, Danes again for Celtic

302

Celtic face Danish runners-up Midtjylland in the Champions League qualification round 2, with the first leg played at Celtic Park five weeks from now.  While there is an enormous amount of work for Ange Postecoglou and Dom McKay to turn the current squad into a force to be reckoned with between now and then, this is a decent draw.

Midtjylland disintegrated in May.  They won one, drew one and lost two of their final four games to blow the league title by a point.  Manager, Bo Henriksen, has been in the Midtjylland job just a week longer than Ange has been Celtic boss, so like us, they are very much a team in transition.

Unlike Sweden, Denmark do not play through the summer.  Danish football has a short, seven-week, break from May to July.  The new season starts the weekend before Midtjylland travel to Glasgow.  On paper, this puts them ahead of us but I doubt that seven-week window allows them to return to training much ahead of Celtic’s return next week.

Having done what looked like the hard work against then Danish champions, Copenhagen, in a Europa League away leg in February last year, Celtic capitulated at home, further exposing some of the wounds that would cost us dearly last season.  Copenhagen exited the tournament at the quarterfinal stage, where they lost a one-off tie to Manchester United by a single goal.  This was an opportunity a better Celtic team would have made more of.

Lots to do but this is one we should rise to the occasion for.

  2. Ronnie Whelan the ROI and star of the all-conquering Liverpool of the Eighties must have been envoloped in a green mist when commentating on Scotland’s match against the Czechs this week on a couple of occasions Ronnie lost the run of himself when declaring CELTIC were finding great difficulty trying to break down the Czech defence. Jeez Ronnie get a grip.

    Would have preferred an easier draw in the Champions League for Ange’s first outing. Huge improvement in the Danish Super league and we cannot forget a very good Celtic team’s loss to Copenhagen recently although Ange’s first taste of Europoean football cannot be any worse than Brendan Rodgers being shocked in Gibraltar. The tie can go either way.

  4. Looking at our squad, we’re quite bloated in areas and have real gaps in places. The current squad looks like:

    Bain; Barkas; Hazard;

    Ralston; Welsh; Julien; Ajer; Hendry; Bitton; Boli; Taylor;

    Soro; CalMac; Turnbull; Christie; Rogic; Shaw; Connell; Henderson; Ntcham;

    Forrest; Johnson; Dembele; Schved;

    Ajeti; Eddie; Griff and Bayo.

    Clearly Ajer, Eddie, Christie and Ntcham are for the off, and CalMac and Griff may also leave. That still leaves us with 21 players, so I can see us buying half a dozen players – GK; RB; CB; left winger; and a striker. After that I think that we need to offload before anyone else arrives.

  5. Wales playing brave attacking inventive football – no fear. Scotland missed that opportunity against Czechs , now we need to defend and hope for luck against engerland

    ……….

    YOU FAILED to make mention on the TORYCULT Govt run by Bonkers Boris, allowing Fans into Wembley ?

    You also FAILED to mention about THOUSANDS in ENGLISH FAN ZONES ?

    You also FAILED to mention the 12 THOUSAND punters allowed into Ascot each of FIVE Days of Racing ?

    I wonder why ?

    YOU live in ENGLAND….What happens in Scotland has NOTHING to do with you or your Ilk….The BNP.

    CHUMP !

  12. England have a lot of great players with lots of skill. For Scotland, this once, I don’t want to see any SPFL players in our starting line up.

    We need players who play week in week out against players of that calibrate. If I was Steve Clarke I’d be filling my team with as many Premiership players as possible. Wee Jamsie as an impact sub with 15 mins to go.

    Last week’s test match, racing at Ascot and Wimbledon are so called test events 😉

    I’m surprised the Scottish government aren’t following a similar path – or maybe George Square was one 🤭
