Midtjylland look as ill prepared as Celtic

291

After two preseason games we have Bristol City tomorrow, Preston North End on Saturday before Midtjylland in Champions League qualification one week today.  Midtjylland have played one more game then us since their return to training last month and start their league campaign on Friday evening.

Our only consolation is the Danes look as ill prepared for a fixture of this magnitude as we are.  There are only two group stage places available in the non-champions route of the tournament; you would be forgiven for thinking this possibility was not worth hoping for, but we are in strange times.

By ranking, those two places are earmarked for Benfica and Shakhtar Donetsk.  Shakhtar have not played a competitive game since March and Benfica’s only competitive game in that period was a cup final in May (they lost).  The Euros is another complication for preseason regimes.

There is a clear opportunity for a well-prepared team to punch above their weight in these qualifiers.  Ange has a lot of work to do if he’s to take advantage.  We will learn more against Midtjylland.

  1. I saw PhilBhoy mentioning Julien earlier. Anyone know if he is remotely close to being able to play? That’s 6-7 months now since he hobbled the post.

also does anyone know if he has managed to clear up his mysterious back injury also.

Thanks for your angles on the team/squad. I’ve vowed to be more positive this year so I’m hoping the existing guys show up for the qualifiers and we have additions before the league starts and they maybe leave. Another positive for me is that anyone signing for Celtic now, cannot be accused of only doing it for CL games. They see a future maybe we can’t

  3. CJ is back running normally, and doing strenght training to rebuild leg muscle.

Originally thought to be out till Novemebr this year, his recovery is ahead of schedule and he could be back playing in september.

  4. Celtic signing 2 more projects – the winger is another 5.6 type like schved, Moffat, m. Johnson. Is he another 3rd choice – after all we have ben linked with winger with physicality and experience!

it really painful watching us make the same mistake over and over and over again! ok, we have plenty time in the window and we will generate money from sales – but we never have a team prepared in advance.

The board has an awful strategy! what happened to the wider Lens?

  5. We missed Julien and James, I am looking forward to both being fit and available.

  6. we need bigger players. fitter players. last season we wwere out fought in lots of games. looked very unfit and weak

  7. According to William Hill, this game takes place at 6pm this evening:

    13 Jul 18:00 Hibernian v Arsenal.

    Does it really?

Ps I am not getting mixed up with ` Hibernians` of, I think, Malta.

  8. I think Dom needs to come out and explain what the business model and recruitment model is.

Even then people will moan about cold water and rubbish scran.

    It was ever thus.

  9. Hopefully they fixed it while we were out. Simply for the Hygenie factor and virus spreading prevention.

The state of the burgers is a whole other subject that could have a blog of its own.

  10. Go tell the Spartim on

It’s often said but always worth repeating the only thing big about our club is the support. I think it’s obvious why we’ve not made any first team purchases, the scouting team are too busy chasing prospects, at least in few years time we’ll see the fruits …….. oh wait we’ve been told this has been our strategy for ten years

I have confidence in AP as it doesn’t look like he suffers fools, Dom well he’s promised a lot and delivered nothing …… so far.

Is it beyond the stretch of imagination to say we never learn ?

  11. CHAIRBHOY,

Not a supporter of PL,but 9 leagues in a row 4 trebles, tells me he must have done something right.Brokered all the best Sponsorship deals we ever had.Think its 27 or 29 trophies while he was CEO.To class this as failure in any walk of life, just sounds churlish to me.Glad he is gone, and it looks like we have the right man in charge, but time will tell.Should be remembered,Dermot Desmond was his boss.

  12. timmy7_noted on

Hurrah for the timaloys all is well midtjyland are even less prepared than we are.

Anyone brave enough to put money on it?

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

  13. For this game against “Midgieland” if I were Ange I’d be drumming it into the players that WE are the underdogs based on the last few years European embarrassments.

I think we have collectively, fans, team and management have entered these games with the big I am attitude, simply because we have a bigger turnover, profits and fan base. The reality is, as a European force we are definitely one of the smaller teams

I’d be amazed if anything meaningful or detailed would be laid out for the supporters ( and enemies) strategy, policy , all the new tangled stuff to recruit and keep fit a bunch of blokes between 20 and 35

We may get a few sound bites but all the real stuff needs to be kept under raps , I am hoping that this is the start of a revolution in how we approach playing moving away from a team of tanner ba wee fellas and more like a modern Northern European outfit who pass , move and have some vague notion that is OK to defend …. I’ll be able to work out for myself where we are headed without having to have it spelt out for me

Can’t quite decide if it’s exciting or scary , probably both , probably explains a lot of panty wetting on the blog …. There are a few lads it could be difficult to sit beside at a match on here 👍

Cornelius…… 4.03 Now thems the kinda posts that make the heart go…whoa whoa whoa whoa…

    H.H.

  16. looks like juliann is another long term injured player that gets superstar status the longer he is out by most on here other than how poor a centre back he is.

  17. RC on 13TH JULY 2021 5:24 PM

looks like juliann is another long term injured player that gets fairly judged the longer he is out by most on here because of how poor the other centre back brought in was.

is he target for today because all out of attacking ryan and ncham ?

  18. ConeyBhoy: I’ve given up buying jerseys, the new home one will probably be the last one I’ll buy. Will continue to buy polo shirts and wear them in the classroom to annoy any possible huns😁😁

Teaching/learning this year has been horrendous for just about everyone so really hoping we’ll be close to normality come September. Thanks for asking.

Hope all is well your end.

  19. our #1 problem as a football team has been losing goals at set pieces. For YEARS!! This should be our #1 priority to solve.

Howe do we solve? first by identifying the issue – the issue is a combination of both full backs under 5ft 7 and center backs like Ajer who can’t jump or are not tall enough to dominate the box. Forget zonal v man on man – its about capability!

We need players who are known for attacking and winning the ball in the air (can’t be difficult to identify), they need to have pace to fit into the new celtic style (defending with little protection from midfield) and full backs need to have physical presence to defend back post crosses.

Please – no more Taylors at the back post, no more Kenny/raltsons at the back post.

Why is it so fkn difficult to profile a player type!!

  20. Ask yourself if you were accused of being a Celtic supporter would there be enough evidence to convict

  21. Is it just me that seems to think that the Scottish Government has decreed that clubs will be allowed 2000 fans per match except for special one off events. There is no promise that after 9th August that this will change.

It would be an anti climax is we end up on the pass to paradise for the full season

  22. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Cornelius @ 4:03pm

    Brilliant.

    What DrambowieCelt said !

  23. Tom McLaughlin on

I see Celtic are interested in a Swede. What the hell is going on? Larsson was a Swede.

    Obviously nothing has changed.

  24. What is the Stars on

Lawwell has left…and apparently he has left the club in a shambolic state …and has lined his pockets with 200 trillion dollars in bit coin (funds that had been raised to help starving orphans by the green brigade)

But apparently his evil doing doesn’t end there…He is still responsible for EVERY thing that goes wrong ..these include…not singing anyone…signing only duds….not selling anyone….selling too many players…the list goes on

    Lawwell must go

  25. Sláinte Ange on

    SLÁINTE

    Sorry for late reply.

We have known for months that Brown, Elyounoussi and Kenny would need replaced . Not one of them has .

    * Could that have been a policy to ensure the new manager would have an input / final say in the replacements? Eminently sensible if so (IMO)

Do you also think that Ange had any input with the decisions to sign SW boys and sanction contracts for Ralston and Griffiths

    * Without a shadow of doubt, yes.

  26. STEBHOY on 13TH JULY 2021 5:32 PM

The club has been obsessed with playing the Celtic way which often translates into not giving a toss about defending…. excruciating in extreme

  27. Back to Basics @ 4:00 pm

“…. does anyone on here know what the pathway from 2,000 to 60,000 in our stadium looks like?”

    ———————-

I am guessing that dressing like the Bay City Rollers and waving Saltires would help improve our attendance allowance. Might even get allowed half waht the Rugby Wallahs get.

  28. Pope confirms he plans to come to Glasgow for COP26!

Scotland’s bishops, having written to the Holy Father to assure him of a warm welcome, should he attend the Conference, are delighted to hear that he DOES hope to attend and would be glad to meet with them in Glasgow.

    ——————-

suggestion for anyone in the know, vfr maybe, could we get the pope to St Marys to bless the An Gorta Mor memorial, and/or invite him to Celtic park if there is a game on during his visit.

or is that an ecumenical matter.
