Migration is beneficial. Even in football

310

If Gary Mackay-Steven moves from Celtic to Aberdeen he will be the third creative midfield player to transfer between the clubs this window. Ryan Christie’s loan to Aberdeen was extended for this season. Jonny Hayes move to Celtic created a vacancy on Aberdeen’s right, and in doing so moved Mackay-Steven down the Celtic pecking order. On paper the move north would be great for the Celtic winger.

This is not quite the top two clubs collaborating on squad management, but it’s as close as you are likely to get. Aberdeen would have preferred to keep Hayes, but with money on the table for a player running down his contract he was sold to the highest bidder: Celtic.

Christie was brought to Celtic by Ronny Deila as a development project. Openings for the creative mid slots at Celtic are incredibly competitive. The risk to Christie is that his development, which was purring along nicely at Inverness, stalls in the Celtic stands. It is in Celtic’s and his best interests that the he plays regularly in an attacking team.

Mackay-Steven has a glorious first few weeks at Celtic but has been hampered by the perennial burden of wingers: consistency. His confidence appears shot. If he moved to Pittodrie, Derek McInnes may be able to get the best out of him.

There’s an empirically established economic fact: migration is economically beneficial for both the gaining and losing nations. This summer’s proposed migration between Celtic and Aberdeen is likely to fall into this category.

In the words of Conor MacGregor there’s no talent in himself, or anyone, only hard work with an aligned attitude. Who can argue with him?

Dismissing someone summarily is an opinion, nothing less. Including your own.

GMS has all the support and coaching he needs to be a success if he chooses to embrace that side of himself.

On the condition of being njury free, which he has not been until recently, it’s up to him, hence my comment about a dose of Glasgow gallus being the present requirement.

Ask Kieran Tierney about hard work improving your “talent”. The young man is a role model for any athlete.

For Conor MacGregor and Kieran. Coincidence?

Sorry pal. Too much fluffy stuff/waffle for me. No specifics about the technical aspects of the game we are talking about. Couldn’t really give a monkeys about Conor Mcgregor.

GMS is decent but not good enough for us. Bottom line.

    Thats why he’s offski.

    Timaloy29,

BR told Hayes he wasn’t good enough for the Celtic first team.

Now he is, me, I’d have GMS before Hayes every time.

    ____

Ah, I missed that. Bizarre thing to say to a new player.

Anyway, I like GMS as well. Wouldn’t mind seeing him stay.

    Sun City Bhoy. 4.52.

I saw GMS train, when he was at Airdrie for a few months, ability wise an absolute standout, hence why he moved on to better things quickly.

However!!! Even then I used to think how more belief in yourself.

A really nice ghuy, but football wise,I always wished he had that ruthless streak others have or to put it another way be more streetwise.

I suppose he wouldn’t be the ghuy he is if he did though. Wherever he ends up I wish him well.

    Canamalar,

    A bit disingenuous there,old bean.

BR’s words to Hayes was when he, Brendan, was trying to get a young Hayes to join him at Reading, not when he was a player at Inverness or Aberdeen.

It was then that he told him that he wouldn’t make the first team at Celtic, but that the coaching at Reading would be a better option.

  8. thetimreaper on

GMS would be a great signing for Aberdeen. I think he struggles playing for Celtic as much as any shortfalls in ability. The jersey is just a wee bit too big for him. The burden is much less at Aberdeen and i genuinely think he would flourish. I don’t think he would be likely to return to Celtic however i would still look to include a buy back option just in case he comes back to haunt us. These buy back deals are interesting in that they are essentially quasi loans deals, it’s something i think we will see a lot more of.

Attitude and hard work is fluffy? Lucky your not in Brendan’s management team! :-)

My comment about Conor MacGregor was to reference role models and mentors.

A few pearls of wisdom from him in Kieran’s direction would do wonders.

  10. JIMMYNOTPAUL on 11TH JULY 2017 5:04 PM

I’m with you there. His first month with Celtic was a showcase of his abilities. Whether he can regain that form is up to him. I hope it’s just not in a red jersey against us!

I wish him well wherever he lands.

    ======

    Is that a direct quote?

    Didnt think so.

As I mentioned above, I don’t care about Conor McGregor. And I still don’t.

If you want to discuss the abilities of a footballer, I’d recommend starting with some technical aspects of… the game of football!

A good attitude and hard work, by the way, are the bare minimum. GMS has both imo. But he falls down on the technical side of the game (which remarkably you have omitted to touch on, when joining a debate on the qualities of a footballer!)

GMS doesnt fall short by a long way, but we have to be ruthless.

The bar has been raised, which is what we were all screaming out for 2/3 years ago.

    Offski.

    TTT,

I don’t believe it’s disingenuous, a younger player was not good enough but at 31 he’s now good enough, I don’t think so.

    Trad88,

Technical ability is there although you appear to either miss or ignore it.

Positional play is excellent, passing and crossing ability as good if not better than most, I’m sure our new stato provided a set of stats during his only decent run of games under RD that showed him to be more effective in the limited game time he had than the regulars he replaced. Now I expected no less than condescending dismissal of his six game run in which he carried the team because your opinion of him will not allow you to be objective, of that six game run he won MotM I’m sure it was at least four times. You tell us that’s not enough to determine that he’s good enough but it’s plenty for you to make up your mind he’s no good enough, that betrays a closed mind and informs that it’s pointless discussing GMS with you any further.

    Can,

At the age he was, 18-19, Brendan told him that he would not get into our first team, but that he would coach him to be a better player.

He would have been lost under Strachan or Lennon, neither of whom were interested in developing young players.

Rodgers used this to get the lad to join him. He never at any time told him he wasn’t good enough , just that he needed coaching, that he could give.

    But, hey, you knew that.
