MIH poison, poetic history, value of good players

2883

If you’ve been here for 12 years you’ll know that Celtic Quick News started because there was a great untold financial story going on in Scottish football. Celtic were castigated by many, including a large portion of their own support, as “prudent”, while Rangers, then under the majority ownership of Sir David Murray, were lauded for their willingness to ambitiously push the boat out.

But there was a problem. Celtic were losing millions every year. Rangers were losing a lot more, £35m in one season alone. David Murray’s company, Murray International Holdings (MIH), were ½ a billion in debt to Bank of Scotland, and rising.

By this stage MIH’s steel business was dwarfed in significance by its property portfolio. They borrowed from the bank and, perhaps with an eye on the fantasy Ibrox Super Casino, gambled that the market would rise inextricably.

For a few years the debt kept rising. “What’s the problem?” many said, if the Bank are prepared to lend MIH and Rangers, their strategy must be sound. These were difficult times to be preaching financial responsibility in Scottish football, but the reality was written in mile-high font for many of us. “They’re going to crash and burn”, seemed inevitable.

Today we read the news that MIH are, like Rangers before them, finally liquidated. Ignore the reported £200m that Lloyds Banking Group (now owners of Bank of Scotland) lost, that’s just the loose change. The Bank had swapped debt for shares in MIH as clouds gathered. The true financial cost to Lloyds (significantly owned by UK taxpayers) is vastly higher.

Much of the story of David Murray will never be told, not while he’s alive, anyway, as it took place well away from verifiable sources. This might change after he’s dead. The one redeeming positive he brought to football was to end the sectarian signing policy at Rangers in 1989. For that he should be lauded, many before him had the chance to do the same but chose not to.

That aside, the influence of Murray and MIH was poisonous to his club. He sold out for £1 to a liquidation expert in May 2011, against the wishes of his own board’s advisory committee, as his club claimed its last ever league title. The rest, is poetic history.

As luck would have it, tonight I’ll be with some Celtic supporter friends.  We’ll raise a glass to Sir David and his legacy.  Thanks for all you achieved, David, it could never have happened without you.

Erik Sviatchenko is a lesson in the difference good players make to a team. He’s started 11 games since joining in January, we’ve lost four goals over that period. In our previous 11 games we lost 12 goals. His impact on team performance has been phenomenal.

We’ll miss him tomorrow – so should make tactical changes to accommodate the perceived risk.

Motherwell are on fire. Less than two months ago they were in the play-off spot. Now they need just one point to guarantee a top six finish. They will battle every second for that point. If we are going to win tomorrow’s game, we will need to put in our of our best shifts of the season.

Time to get it together, Celtic.

    Hi Phil

Don’t you think if there was even a sniff of illegality around Celtic and DD’s tax affairs the succulent lamb brigade would have it on bill posters all round Scotland let alone their rags that masquerade as newspapers.

Just a note on Res 12. I was in the local on Saturday and I asked 5 Celtic and 1 Sevco supporter if they had even heard of Res 12 and 100% of them knew nothing about it.

This is quite alarming as I thought these guys would have been up to speed. It seems that word is not getting out about this situation. I now think it’s time for some sort of action to bring Res 12 to everyone’s attention.

I recently seen a protest by Charlton Athletic’s fans (ITHINK). They blew whistles and the referee had to stop the game. Now just imagine if in the 12th minute next Sunday that all the Celtic fans who know about Res 12 were to start blowing whistles and the game was stopped on live TV.

A worldwide audience would be asking what’s all this about? Surely at halftime the studio guests would have to address the incident. I see this as a very good way of using the media to our advantage for once.

So I ask all the informed Bhoys and Ghirls who are attending the game to take a whistle for themselves and at least one other for the people around you and on the 12th minute blow it like you were on a St Patrick’s day parade in Boston.

At half time everyone will be asking what’s all the whistles about and we can enlighten others around us and even if the media don’t discuss it on TV at the end of the game there will be at least 20,000 Celtic supporters aware of the cheating that has gone on.

Tell them when they go back to their local’s after the game to tell their family and friends what the whistle’s were for. Tell them that when they return to work on Monday to inform ALL football supporters in their workplace about the cheating that has gone on in this country regarding the football authorities and the clubs in the crumbledome both past and present.

    SPREAD THE WORD

    KEEP THE FAITH

Good idea … I suggested a few weeks back that we distribute leaflets on resolution 12 as the majority of supporters don’t blog .

A bit late to organise but a leaflet distribution combined with 12th minute whistles would really raise awareness

MJ…If Sevco and Rangers are one and the same club, why didn’t they use the £500,000 to pay towards the circa-170 creditors that they owe somewhere in the region of £130,000,000 to?

Do you think it is fair on all those creditors?

Do you think it is right that there is 17 Schools closed down in Edinburgh, who all need repaired and a football club is gleefully boasting about being up to their knees in EBT’s, whilst such schools need repaired and you and your like think it’s ok that this ‘football club’ can carry on as if nothing significant has happened.

Do you think it is fair on all the other clubs who paid their way (even Hearts,Dundee, Dunfermline who reached an agreement with their creditors in order to save their history).

Do you think it is fair on the supporters of all those other clubs, who have given their hard earned cash to watch their team for many years and win fleck all trophies but they paid their money anyway, knowing they had to live within their means, knowing that if they did not live within their means, their club would go out of business…administration and Liquidation, then they would have no team for example, Clydebank, Third Lanark, Gretna…

All played by the same rules…only one club did not play by the same rules…yet they still went to the wall, out of business and Liquidated

and because you can’t accept Rangers went bust and out of business

You think we should allow you the indulgence of you telling us that Sevco and Rangers are one and the same…when they are clearly NOT !!

  13. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

I’m not going to the game next week but I think it’s a spiffing idea to take a whistle yo blow on the 12 th minute with perhaps a Green Brigade banner highlighting Res 12. As a former heidie can I recommend the Acme Thunderer whistle. When we’re 5-0 up you can use them to whistle the Celtic a Song and save your vocal chords.

    Judas,

I once decided, out of sheer curiosity, to have a look on some Sevco bloggs just to see what the other half thought about the issues of the day.

However, I was horrified at the sheer volume of sectarian hatred on these sites that I vowed never to visit them again.

On this site there is very little of that kind of stuff allowed through. Ironically most of it comes from the contributions of your fellow Sevconians.

So you have absolutely no right to climb any moral high ground considering that it was your dead team that introduced such sectarian hatred into Scottish football.

A chap called Ure Primrose, I believe, ably backed by all subsequent boards and managers for the next 70 odd years.

I should add the Scottish media to that list of aiders and abettors I think.

A part of this policy was even still in place until your new club signed its first Irish Catholic in John Daley.

So spare us all the ‘haters’ and ‘bigots’ nonsense. If no one likes you it’s because you brought it on yourselves.

And it’s certainly not for sectarian reasons you are so disliked.

Oh really. Perhaps he should contact Canamalar and give him his name and address so that his bona files can be checked. Do you think you can throw in a reference to Ireland and we all keel over and accept your word? There are hundreds and sometimes thousands of Irish Celtic supporters who travel to Celtic’s games at great expense but don’t go demanding the names of supporters who are financing Resolution 12. Maybe you could give Canamalar more information about yourself while you’re at it.

Public opinion changed things in West Dunbartonshire. I cannot remember the last time they walked here. The council and polis do not allow them to walk here. Civil disorder from the Fenians here stopped it 20 odd years ago.

He’s not a good Celtic man if he would place other good Celtic men in danger. There is no good reason for informing him of the identities of people who have given financial backing to Resolution 12 and why would he want to spend money on finding out who they are? What is his name? If he’s spending money then, using his logic, I think we have a right to know who he is.

It is good to support a friend but if you don’t mind. If someone has been assured that there is no funding from CFC and doesn’t accept that and demands to see accounts- when it seems he has made no financial contribution. He is then advised that Auldheid has received threats -a likely carry over from a leak from the Herald Newspaper Group. He replies that DIRECT threats are to be condemned. What about indirect threats?

I suggested that if he continued to think that CFC were meeting some or any of the costs he could get an answer from CFC Finance Department.

He continued to demand to see financial documents and would PAY costs.

Now I know that some occupations pay for information, An Garda Siochana for one, and one or two others.

At this juncture the concentration should be in having an examination of the matters of Res12 in Switzerland not in demands of who paid what, to whom, when and why?

May I say some of your friend’s language did not sound too Celtic like.

I note that he no longer supports Res12 which is sad. Oiche maith
