Mikey, Moh and converting talent

414

I could not make sense of why we signed Mohamed Elyounoussi on loan from Southampton in the last days of the 2019 summer transfer window.  He played in Mikey Johnston’s position, a prospect I had great hopes for.  Just days later, Mikey was a star at Ibrox, winning possession (albeit without much difficulty) and setting up Odsonne Edouard for the opening goal.

Mohamed proved to be an important part of yet another treble in our second nine-in-a-row season, whereas the Celtic coaches saw gaps in Mikey’s play I had missed.

It has been five years since Mikey made his debut, so long, perhaps, that we have lost sight of the fact he is only 23 and missed much of the intervening period through injury.  Jota we more readily think of as young, although the Portuguese is three weeks older.

I’m not prepared to write Mikey off.  He has an ability to switch left-to-right and back better than anyone else in the squad at the moment (including Jota).  His battles with form and end product have been common among wingers for decades and are not fatal to a successful career.

With three years left on his contract, he needs regular football and encouragement.  Celtic have to learn how to convert this level of natural talent into a successful career, even if it means sending them out for a period.

So we’ve had Rodgers , Lennon, Kennedy , Strachan ,McManus, Davies, Duff, Postecoglu to name a few.

But Celtic are to blame as per usual for not ‘offering Mikey enough coaching’

  3. BSR,

I would put Tony in front of JJ at the moment for a starting place. On present form.

good stuff, give us a report back on the experience, and could you identify any future candidates for the scape goat position, ta much.

  5. If I were Celtics sports psychologist I’d start with a simple name change to Mike or even Micheal.

  6. A football career waits for no one. Mikey J needs a good run of games week after week. That will not be with Celtic. Stay fit and healthy, mind and body.

Off topic. The Hibs guy, Ron Gordon, is beginning to make the old Hearts guy, V Romanov, appear to be the definition of common sense. Would be quite pleased if Hibs went down this season. They will have earned it.

Maybe Tony will change agents as Juranovic’s seems to have a very fertile imagination.

Josip is another player that needs to establish himself at Celtic by staying in the side for a longer period than he’s done so far.

Was a friendly game played in preparation got facing Vodjvo D ina as far as I remember.

Big jock promised a new formation that would be even more exciting than normal with players playing in unaccustomed positions.

As a youngster I thought it was a possible plan for the future, but looking back now it was probably a scheme by big Jock to get a crowd in or to suss out yougslavian style of play without Vodjvodina getting any clues about what might await them in the quarterfinal.

  12. *PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2022-23*

    *COMPETITION STARTING THIS WEEKEND*

Just a wee reminder that this season’s Player Of The Year competition officially kicks off in just 3 sleeps’ time 😊

If anyone wants a full explanation of how everything works just email me at the address below and I’ll happily provide the detail. But the main points to remember are as follows –

    1. Importantly, its open to all and everyone to join in when they can. No need to register, sign up or pay fees as it’s just a bit of fun. No need to vote after EVERY game but just the ones you see. And you don’t need to be in from the start – join in any time so spread the word around!

    2. All each person does is watch the game, decide which 3 players in your opinion performed best on any given day and then stick the 3 names in an email to me at SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM .

    3. You don’t have to put your 3 nominations in order and neither do you have to explain your reasoning behind your pick. Whilst I’m always happy to read every email I don’t always have time to reply to everyone so those detailed thoughts might be better put onto the blog? Especially those lurkers who regularly join in on the voting 😉

    4. I then add up the votes cast and issue the results for that game, usually between 10.00pm and 10.30pm on the evening following the game. These will be posted on Sentinel Celts but, again, I’ve no problem if they are then copied elsewhere.

    5. For each game, the Man Of The Match (as voted by you, readers!) wins 5 points. Next best gets 4, next gets 3 etc. These points accumulate on a game by game basis to eventually determine our Player Of The Year.

    6. Finally, please remember that absolutely anyone is welcome to join in, whether you post on here, post elsewhere, lurk, or even just know someone who posts or lurks. So, I’m happy for you to encourage friends, family etc to have their opinions counted too.

Just been given the history of the long forgotten Dumbarton Phoenix CSC. This is why I am doing this book, so present day histories will be preserved for posterity. Now up to 164 CSC’s who have contacted me. If you want your club added, please give me a shout.

    1. Brief explanation of why Celtic will get more CL money because of Olympiacos’ defeat last night.

Money for CL group participation is given in 4 ways

    – Fixed starting fee of €15.64M

    – Performance payments for a win/draw

    – Coefficient based amounts

    – Share of TV Market Pool

So are we now in agreement that at the time of the Highland Clearances there was no English army?

Because that would be a good place to start any further elucidation of the subject.

    2. The Olympiacos result only affects the coefficient amount. How it works…

UEFA has a pool of €600.6M for coefficient payments. This is divided into 528 equal shares, with each being worth ~€1.137M – currently around £950K.

    5. Their elimination now guarantees that all 4 champions route qualifiers will ranked below us. That adds another 4 shares on to our total, taking us up to 7 – €7.96M.

Had Olympiacos qualified, they’d have taken one of those shares away.
