Mikey, Moh and converting talent

414

I could not make sense of why we signed Mohamed Elyounoussi on loan from Southampton in the last days of the 2019 summer transfer window.  He played in Mikey Johnston’s position, a prospect I had great hopes for.  Just days later, Mikey was a star at Ibrox, winning possession (albeit without much difficulty) and setting up Odsonne Edouard for the opening goal.

Mohamed proved to be an important part of yet another treble in our second nine-in-a-row season, whereas the Celtic coaches saw gaps in Mikey’s play I had missed.

It has been five years since Mikey made his debut, so long, perhaps, that we have lost sight of the fact he is only 23 and missed much of the intervening period through injury.  Jota we more readily think of as young, although the Portuguese is three weeks older.

I’m not prepared to write Mikey off.  He has an ability to switch left-to-right and back better than anyone else in the squad at the moment (including Jota).  His battles with form and end product have been common among wingers for decades and are not fatal to a successful career.

With three years left on his contract, he needs regular football and encouragement.  Celtic have to learn how to convert this level of natural talent into a successful career, even if it means sending them out for a period.

Agree re Motherwell. Atrocious performance. I can see why the new Hibs manager chased Paul McGinn out of Easter Road.

  3. Motherwell beat home and away by a team sitting 5th in the league of Ireland is nothing short of shameful for the Scottish game. Well done Sligo.

has one rationale behind his posts, i.e. to demean and ridicule anyone who simply offers a point of view that does not suit his view of the world.

I liken it to the Mason Boyne view of the world, never underpin any opinion with facts, when faced with overwhelming defeat in a debate just double down on your rhetoric and shift focus to another topic plus spice it all by demeaning your opponent personally, as is often the Brit Nat way, maybe its difficult to copy and paste from such a small book of world history, there is a small cult following on here who have a similar outlook, the irony of being an anonymous troll/alter-ego calling out other posters I’m afraid is beyond parody.

Much more important is our forthcoming League campaign, at this point, we have to prepare for another battle with Sevco, they have a manager who ended the season in a Europa cup final and won the Scottish cup, they have money to spend, Ange is made of strong stuff we have faith though looking forwrd to it

The Champions, ie Celtic should be first out in the new league season. Tv or no TV we should not have to unfurl the title flag after the season has kicked off.

I also think its very poor timing to televise our game when there is a major Euro final taking place that has caught the imagination of many newcomers.

This woman’s competition has galvanised many families, woman and girls.

It may be of no interest to the vast majority on here , of course Celtic is our priority, however I would wager many female supporters watching on TV will be channel hopping.

This is a disgraceful and disrespectful ko time to be imposed on the Champions of Scotland.

    HH.

PS : Imagine the outcry if there were no trains back from Wembley on Sunday.

Weefra – Sorry to hear of your loss, may your good lady RIP.

I always loved your posts of tales from the Dale’s (farm) keep on posting.

BelmontBrian- Do not listen to that gregarious, gallous, gallavanting govanhillite that is BRRB he deserves a place on the subs bench for his off field frolics.

Petec – 4 – 1 to the Timaloys was me being reserved. It could quite possible be more, but a win any win will do to start off. To think where we were last year at this point a good start to the season would put the cat among the pigeons or just make everyone in scottish fitba sick.

Right coal face beckons early start/early finish.

We’ve had our own European set backs so I won’t be giving Motherwell stick.

Of course the Euro game is on council telly – if it was on pay TV the audience would be much less.

If England win it will be a major embarrassment for the men’s team.

Although my comment was tongue-in-cheek, there was a serious point behind it in that I was looking forward to watching the women’s final until I saw the kick-off time and I was disappointed to know I would miss it.

You have elucidated the point perfectly. Thanks for that.

It is wholly ironic that it is now the women singing “It’s coming home” as the menfolk usually forget to bring it home.

  18. Tom

The only time they’ve ever won anything i.e 66 was at home. Let’s see if the women can do the same.

My nerves enjoyed the break from the football but I can feel them awakening in time for Sunday. No room for a slow start this year.
