Milanese mistakes, Sevco Annual Return

705

Milan’s mistake with their Champions League squad – they inadvertently included Stephan El Shaarawy in their restricted A List of players, instead of the B List, denying a place in either list for M’Baye Niang, is welcome news. Their squad is strong, with or without Niang, but the oversight lends credence to the notion that a malaise has settled over the club. Director, Umberto Gandini apologised, but already the Milanese are focused on what they don’t have in their armory as a result of the oversight – an excuse for failure is ready made.

I met the owner of an IT company shortly before they went into liquidation and asked him who he had on his board.  “Are you not on our board too?” was his jocular response.  The company had already gone through a couple of difficult years.  With each passing period investors became increasingly concerned; they all wanted a place around the boardroom table, convinced that their gilt-edged experience would be able to guide the company through its troubles.

The chief exec had to cope not-so-much with a boardroom full of captains of industry (which they were), as another pressure group to satisfy, along with clients, creditors, staff and the bank (they may have been weeks from liquidation, but they still had borrowing, this was not a Metro Bank deposit account-only operation).

The chief exec understood the industry and, left to his own devices, stood a sporting chance at survival, but when the boardroom table became occupied by a parcel of rogues the game was up.

On a completely separate matter, I am delighted at the prospect of Paul Murray and John McClelland having a second shot at being a non-executive director of a football club.  Wikipedia’s definition of the roles of a non-exec is worth a cursory glance to indicate why.  They did so well last time.  The others, who it is proposed will share a place at Newco’s table, also appear perfect for the role.  If only Sir David would come out of retirement and join them.

Will one of the many directors insist that The Rangers Football Club Ltd submits its Annual Return to Companies House? Under its previous name, Sevco Scotland Ltd, The Rangers Football Club Ltd bought liquidation assets from Duff and Phelps, and which, according to Rangers International’ PLC’s interim financial statement in March, was incorporated into the PLC’s group.

The Return is over two months late.  Perhaps, with so many directors available for comment, one will be asked by a journalist or shareholder why the company which bought all the assets has not submitted basic information, revealing ownership details. Perhaps not. No hurry, a striking off notice will be weeks away.

  1. Auldheid – did they not get away with it this year on the basis that Companies House didn’t require accounts until after the SFA date and therefore they had none.

  4. Auldheid – I must admit my energies have largely had to be directed at non Celtic, non Football issues this last few years and I have very much been coming to CQN and to Celtic in fact as a form of release from other stuff…. so forgive me for not having paid enough attention to the licensing thing. I’ve read some of your stuff but it takes more digesting than I have been able to commit to.

However, this has caught my eye. Are you saying that in changing rules to guard against the types of errors and sins committed by OldCo the SFA have actually made it even more possible for them to issue licenses to clubs who are living out with their means?

We all had hope when Platini introduced the Fair Play stuff, but £600 Million spent in England, £85 million spent on Bale and the ongoing bloating of players wages in richer leagues tells me UEFA won’t be giving a sh1te any time soon about the Pontious Pilate clause in the SFA’s rules.

I’ve been struck for a long time at the similarities between the Banking crisis and the Rangers one. In one case the Government, egged on by the banks cheer leaders and free marketeers, the incestuous corporate world and all it’s cronyism forced two governments to implement measures which were effectively state aid for ailing financial institutions at the tax payers expense (indeed at the expense of the NHS and the Welfare system) – while the SFA (read Government) were pressured (in the way you pressure an open door to get through it) did what they could to prop up and save a dying institution at the people’s expense. In both cases the idiocy continues and the recovery as a result is delayed if not stopped all together.

It would lead one to despair but far better it leads us to fight.

And we must not ignore the fact that Scotland does not operate in total isolation. We have often hoped in the past that HMRC, BDO, UEFA, English football people – anyone from outside Scotland would be the catalyst for change here, would tell the adminstrators of the game here to cease and desist. But we were wrong to do so. When these people meet in board rooms and in executive boxes at big games they are meeting like minded people looking out for their own patch, their own influence, their own kind. There is no knight in shining armour about to bring honesty and integrity to the game – here or elsewhere. Money talks, money rules and money corrupts.

I fear the game may actually have to die a little in order to be truly reborn. I fear it will take genuine financial implosion across the european game before we see any ‘return’ (if we were ever there in the first place) to fair play, fair competition and real sporting endevour and merit being rewarded rather than financial muscle and TV money ruling everything about Association Football.

    Riskorrie,

I stayed in the Double Tree Suites in January in New York, its right on Times Square, the hotel is very good actually and pretty reasonable.

If its for your wife, one child and yourself then one room will sleep all as they have a reasonable sized living area separated from the bedroom with a sofa (bed) in it, a small kitchen and decent sized bathroom.

Spit distance from times square, with valet parking, but I wouldn’t recommend to drive in New York.

  10. A real good opportunity for Big Peter to apply the rules of the SFA in his new job regards the appointment of former Directors of Deidco to Sevco.

  12. Mark Hately says he cannot possibly estimate the enormous number of new players the return of wee Craigie would be worth.

  13. Re get rid of the Sevco FC 5 stars petition. Cares not a jot if Zombie FC keeps them on the shirt. All the more risible as far as I am concerned. I have an allegedly match worn Henke Larsson Celtic home shirt ( a gift not bought so tend to believe Ghod actually wore it). Now I can put it on strut around my local football pitch claiming I am Henke. But everyone knows I am not and tells me such however the more I am told I am not Henke the more irate I become and vigorously protest that I am Ghod look says I “my shirt has Larsson clearly printed on the back, this proves I am Henrick” – result lots raucous laughter at my expense which only adds to my frustration and hence continues the cycle of me making an absolute a*se of myself continually trying to prove I am someone that I am patently not.

Everyone including the Sevco support knows they are not Rangers 1872 and that club died. The whole farce is the proverbial gift that keeps on giving. Long may their delusion last.

  14. ‘Milanese mistakes’?

The biggest ‘Milanese mistake’ I can think of is signing Mark Hateley in 1984.

Milan fans still have nightmares about this dud.

  15. Senhores,

Thanks for all the NYC info. We’d a great time up there last Xmas, including one of the (surprise) “family” hits being a visit to the Manhattan #1 CSC in Jack Dempsey’s

Anyway, not much to tell you fitba-wise from here, except that there’s (yet) another corruption at high levels of fitba administration storm blowing. This time it’s a question of over 500m USD (allegedly 200m alone in the last two years) which has gone missing from CONMEBOL’s coffers.

THere was a meeting of the dissidents yesterday with Romario (who I used to loathe as a player, but grows more in stature each day) saying amongst other things “…by an enormous “coincidence” three corrupt organisations, the CBF, CONMEBOL and FIFA all have one name in common – Marco Polo del Nero.

Remember that name. He’s Ricardo Teixeira’s successor (in more ways than one).

Finally speaking of the corrupt, bottom sucking toad that Teixeira is/was – see that Andorra are now considering booting him out of his wee “fiscal haven” there.

PS. Five hooses or One Hotel? Braw !!!
