Millions on line for Celtic as CL qualifiers pivot

440

Sustained football success is all about the money.  Any team can do a St Johnstone, win three trophies in a decade to become Scotland’s second most decorated club in that era, but if you don’t have the income, you will revert to a lowly mean soon enough.

This season’s Champions League qualification ties, therefore, are vitally important in determining the structural advantage Celtic have over would-be rivals.

Newco opened strongly against Union Saint-Gilloise.  The Belgians, playing in front of their home fans, clearly set out a stall to inhibit the visitors and play on the counter.  This paid dividends 27 minutes in when calamitous defensive gaps allowed Union to score their first ever European goal (they lost both legs to Juventus 1-0 in their previous tie 58 years ago).

Union’s penalty clearly shocked Newco, not to mention their former players in the Premier Sports studio.  That’s not the kind of decision that goes against this team in domestic football and they were not happy seeing “rules” catch them out, which an infuriated Kenny Miller bemoaned after the game.

Long before the second goal arrived, Newco were a diminished force.  They have played only four games since last season, Union played twice as many.  The contrasting fitness was clear as the game concluded with Union creating openings that could have put the tie to bed.  This short Newco preseason looked like a potential mistake beforehand, four games is not enough to get a squad fully fit.

As it stands, Newco retain a fighting chance of qualifying for the play-off round.  If they get there, they earn a €5m bonus, plus gate money.  Failure against Union, and they go straight to the Europa League, no bonus payment and not even a play-off round to generate gate money.  If Celtic are the only Scottish team to reach the CL Group Stage, they retain the entire Scottish TV pot, which would be worth an extra €3m to Celtic.

Make no mistake, we have a real and active interest in the Champions League qualifiers.  These figures are huge factors in determining competitive outcomes in Scotland.  There is a spreadsheet somewhere in Govan that no one will open today.

Do free prescriptions, dental care, eye tests, bus travel for over 60s – (now extended to the young people) not count. All introduced by the SNP and not available across the border if I’m not mistaken.

We’re practically living in a socialist hell up here compared to Englandshire.

For sure the Port was really divided, the early Irish that came over were lassies for the ropeworks, then the men came as labourers for the yards, but very divided communities.

The Bay area behind the town buildings the description of the conditions are unbelievable.

I might post some more another time, 400+ pages, a magnificent iece of work.

It’s true that in Scotland the comfortably off get free prescriptions and eye tests, whereas in England the comfortably off (other than those with a medical exemption) have to pay a small charge.

The SNP government funded those measures from existing budgets, so to benefit the comfortably off something else within the budget was cut. That’s not socialism. That’s populism.

Dental care is not universally free in Scotland.`

Bus travel is free in London for the over 60s, and in the rest of England for those of pensionable age.

And please don’t get me started on tuition fees. Another sop to the middle classes paid for by cutting provision for the less advantaged.

Spot on fella. I’ve heard the hubris kick in – “we reached the Europa final, we are too good for these diddy teams”. The spotlight has shifted to a poorly set up team from a conservative thinking manager, a lack of pace that was taken for granted at the back with Bassey around, a lack of creativity when you stick Kamara, Lundstrum and Jack in a team without Aribo. Itten has been reincarnated by Colak (round peg, square hole) and you know where we are now:

    1. The hun crowd will win it.

    2. Kent, the non-goalscoring winger, will be the difference.

    3. Fatboy Alf gets better the more he’s out of the team regardless of the three chins he currently carries.

    Hell mend them. The feckers.

Do what fake working class do -vote Conservative.

If worked for wee racist George

    ““““““““

If you want Krankies abracadabra financial looting of the public purse to end, then you have to vote within the gerrymandered set up in Scotland were Krankie gets 35% of the votes = 75% of the seats, and if in your constituency has a tory nearest challenger, then its vote tory, or suck Krankie?

Krankie isn’t the problem, daft TIMMY is the problem.

If I was in George Galloway`s constiuency and the opposition to Krankie was a hold your nose and vote for either of the 3 walloper, neoliberal, imperialist foreign policy favouring paries, OR, vote for Krankies Celtic hating, slyly agreeing with the imperialists foreign policy, say one thing and do another policy, women hating, children hating, Catholic hating, refugee fake affection policy, grandstanding about the poor refugees and then dumping them all onto a boat once the compliant MSM cameras stopped rolling, waiting for folk to snuff it before the poor refugees can be homed pile of bs policy, hating the English policy and then shamefacedly trying to deny it, lol, public purse abracadabra financial policy, standing in a voting queue with daft TIMMY talking guff, guff, and more guff, etc, etc, then I’d vote for the first group of hideous demons, rather than the second, I’d vote for libtory, labtory, or just tory.

Then every time an evil rat looked at me out on the streets of Scotland, I’d console myself wih the comforting knowledge that at least I’m not a daft TIMMY who voted for that vermin.

  14. One of the biggest issues for progressive politics at the moment is that too many pushing for constructive change deal with the world that they remember not the one in front of them / around them.

They try to sell a view of the world that too many can see as being a fallacy or an abstract based on memory rather than a working reality — credibility for change is much reduced even before the rich man’s media / greed / nationalism / identity politics gets in on the act.

We have our GGG friendly moon howler talking about living standards being shredded since 1979 — fortunately for the UK that is nowhere near the truth and unfortunately for the alphabet salad of micro parties listed too many can see through the fallacy they are trying to sell.

The issue — which is rarely taken on — is that living standards have risen just a case that not by enough given the bounty of North Sea Oil and technological progress plus that the increases have been far from consistent / universal with some shooting ahead while others suffer periods of stagnation.

Look at the wages on the railways — great progress has been made since 1979 both in absolute sense and also relatively as the drivers regained their historical position of being the wage aristocracy of the British working class.

Less however is said about the organised theft being carried out by those who deal with the track — upgrades more so than day to day maintenance — where a wages / books in culture has been replaced by a contracting system with far too many self employed and doing tax gymnastics to Olympic standard.

The biggest failure of 1997-2010 was the rise of the part of the population that seemingly earned little or nothing but who consumed a lot — skewed the income figures somewhat to GB’s embarrassment — but the issue was never investigated far less understood. That is a political view that has lost its appetite to understand the world around it and therefore shape the future.

The Tories worked out that they couldn’t hold the dam back any longer.

So it was better to open the floodgates and manage who “drowns”

    .

Progressive politics is now all too much about giving the “dead” the right pronouns at their economic burial rather than fighting to shape the flow of the waters and who gets to ride the waves.

It is a strange world we live in.

  15. So who carried the can for our 4 years of CL failure?

From memory very little discussed on here.

It’s 2 years till next GE, I’ve a feeling it will be called before that, with Tories and opposition all over the place, and, the MP`s will be brown enveloped to go along with a rigged GE which will see Starmer winning a majority and his mission will be to take us into a closer relationship with EU, but it won’t called overturning Brexit, or anything contentious like that, BUT, it’ll be a GE which hugely strengthens Britains foreign policies.

If you base your expectations on how the Huns played in the Europa last year then yes you would give them a decent chance.

They were playing high octane aggressive football at 100mph.

So far they are playing a different game this year, the newbies haven’t settled in yet and right now they are vulnerable. I wish we could play them net Saturday, I reckon we would mollicate them.

I don’t expect them to qualify for Group Stage, I’d give them 40/60 chance against Belgians but I reckon winners of PSV & Monaco will get the Group place.
