Milne’s prompt for Aberdeen fans

522

A few points about Stewart Milne’s comments this week. Immediately after the Court of Session overturned the earlier rulings on Rangers EBTs, putting the issue of sporting advantage in the spotlight, I noted that it would be the clubs who would decide if this matter would be looked at again, and that if Celtic were unable to gain support from a number of clubs, the issue was dead in the water.

The conversation has been parked until after BDO hear about their application to appeal to the Supreme Court but the issue remains active. Celtic are not alone on this matter, but as you hear from Milne, everyone is not on the same page.

I was a bit surprised Milne spoke openly on the issue but this needed to come out. Just as the SPFL’s decision to act or not is in the hands of the clubs, Aberdeen’s stance on the matter is ultimately in the hands of their supporters. If they care enough about the issue, they must express this view to Milne as clearly as they did in 2012, when they changed his plans on an earlier matter.

Milne’s comments about Scottish football’s position relative to the game in England were among the most futile ever uttered. He is one of the few people in a position to work for change. Aberdeen have more going for them than Swansea – a smaller club based outside England who earn over £100m from Premier League TV rights each season.

No wonder we’re outside the party when one of the men in charge has only just recognised a party exists.

Many thanks to all who donated to our Mary’s Meals appeal yesterday. The generosity of one or two of you blew me away. If you entered the Magners’ ticket competition, check your email this afternoon, as the winner will be notified shortly.

There’s still time to order a book or DVD from CQN Bookstore. Take a look at what’s on offer.

Christmas time, and it turns out there was room enough at this inn for a kitten. Very cute little thing that’s brought smiles all round, except to Munn and Dunning that is, who really haven’t taken too well to little McCrone cramping their style.

  10. I said a long time ago that the Rangers/Sevco fiasco would not be addressed by the football authorities in Scotland but by the London police and courts. Nothing particularly perceptive about this, many thought similarly.

However, given the recent comments by a judge in the Ashley v King case and although not related the judgment for the paratroopers yesterday, I’m less optimistic.

The UK is run for the establishment for the establishment and that will not be allowed to change. In short it is corrupt to its core.

We want justice for years of corruption by a bent club and a bent football ‘governing’ body.

However, think of those who have been murdered and those who were abused by MPs and others in the establishment in the on-going CSA Inquiry.

As JFH is alluding to,we have too many players, and not enough good ones,we need more quality less quantity. We are starting to collect players,as we did under WGS. We clone players we already have. For Allan, see Christie,McGregor,Rogic,Forrest. We need to sign specific players for specific positions. All of the above’can play anywhere across the middle, and off the front…’ We are trying to create round pegs for square holes,if you want a right winger, identify one ,then buy him. HH

  15. Good article on Chris Sutton. Like this wee snippet…. “Writes a decent, very opinionated newspaper column, in which he gives a good impression of a man who doesn’t give a flying feck, which is very refreshing, especially in Scotland where insiders tell me it’s usual to have to be nice to all things Rangers in order to get on. But even so, he wasn’t afraid to give the current Celtic team a proper kicking after their European exit. Works on BT Sport, especially on Scottish games where he sometimes shows an amusing degree of disdain for his fellow panelists.”

REVAMPING Scottish leagues to help Rangers or Hibs if they failed to gain promotion would send our game into total meltdown says Gers former captain.

IF it was down to me I’d reconstruct Scottish football tomorrow. The sooner we shake up the current league structure the better.

It makes perfect sense to expand the top division to 16 teams and I would go further by introducing two further leagues of 16 to create a new-look three-tier set-up, with clubs from the Highland and Lowland Leagues fast-tracked into the professional game.

That’s my model for changing the face of our football and I’m convinced these changes would work really well across the board. In an ideal world I’d implement them as quickly as possible because we’re crying out for something radical and new.

But here’s the thing, this is not an ideal world. This is Scotland – and it’s no place for common sense.

The truth is, if I was sitting in Neil Doncaster’s chair this morning I wouldn’t touch my own grand plan with a bargepole. Because introducing a new and improved set-up for the start of next season would result in all hell breaking loose throughout the Scottish game.

Everyone knows what the problem is here. Fans from all clubs might be desperate for reconstruction to take place but not if Rangers are seen to be the club benefitting most from the alterations.

Can you imagine it? If my old club failed to win promotion back into the top flight under its own steam this season only to be handed a Premiership place regardless? This whole place would go into meltdown. Reconstruction wouldn’t be welcomed as something positive for the whole Scottish game – it would become a dirty word in every stadium in the country. The new EBT.

And after spending the last three-and-a-half years working their way back up through the leagues, no one would feel more aggrieved about it than Rangers themselves.

They would never be allowed to forget it. It would be exactly the same for Hibs who would also be accused of receiving special treatment.

But it’s Rangers who would suffer the most. Listen, I realise everyone had different ideas about what should have happened to Rangers after administration and liquidation.

These were difficult times when football had to make really hard decisions. I didn’t want to see Rangers sent to the lowest tier because it felt as if they were being punished for the behaviour of folk who had no right to be inside that boardroom.

But, looking back, I understand why others felt very strongly that Rangers had to pay the price.

I don’t recall Rangers crying in public about it either. They accepted the decision and went about trying to play their way back up through the divisions fairly and squarely

Yes, the top flight has missed them. It’s a poorer league because of the lack of competition on the park and lack of finances off it. To have a strong top flight you need to have all the biggest clubs punching their weight and going toe to toe.

That’s what creates competition and excitement. And it’s why the thought of three big clubs like Rangers, Hibs and Dundee United all stuck in the Championship next season seems ridiculous to me.

But that doesn’t mean the leagues should be ripped up just to make sure it doesn’t happen. On the contrary, it’s why nothing should be done until the time is right.

I also know first hand from my experience at Clyde that the clubs in the lower leagues benefitted hugely from getting a couple of visits a season from Rangers and their fans.

And as for Rangers? They just got on with it. They did their time. The last thing they want now is to be given a leg up by reconstruction. They don’t want to be gifted a return to the top flight. They will want to earn it.

So now is not the time to start shifting goalposts even if I do believe the sooner the set-up is changed the better for all concerned. No, now is the time to have proper conversations about what is best for the game long term.

That gives us all four months to get around the table and come up with a plan that can be agreed on by the clubs. Like Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson I would like to see the changes announced in the summer then introduced for the start of the following season, in 2017. That way there can be no recriminations or accusations.

For me, it would be a 16-team top flight and the same numbers in the Championship and League One. People may think we already have too many clubs but I’ve seen the standard in the Highland and Lowland Leagues and they are ready to make the step up. We could bring half a dozen of them in tomorrow with no problems.

Again, it would be fresh and new for the fans who have become bored with watching the same old fixtures every few weeks. For example, by early January we’ll have played Queens Park three times. How is that meant to excite punters and keep them coming back for more?

I would also like to see the reintroduction of the reserve leagues so our youngsters get a proper education in the real world, not pampered in five-star academies where they are wrapped in cotton wool.

There are lots of alterations I feel could make a real difference to our game and there seems to be a mood to make them happen. I’ll be right behind those who are leading the charge for change.

But don’t push them through right now or Scottish football might never get over it.

  17. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

    Joe Filippis Haircut

100% agree – too much dead wood at Celtic – Christmas clearout before we bring folk in. I wrote this last year – my view is we need 33 players. 11 first choice players on £10-20K each (4x£10K, 4x15K, 3x20K), 11 second team players on £5-7.5K each and 11 youth prospects on £2k each. that gives us:

    3 players for each position

competition to incentivise progression between and within 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams

a rigid pay scale and certainty for financial planning

a reduction on current player wage bill

Ideally this would encourage more home grown development.
