Mind the Kayal Gap

794

Neil Lennon, his goalkeeper and defenders will not be too concerned at the loss of their first goal in domestic football yesterday since Noah was a boy.  John Rankin’s pot-shot from 20-odd yards clipped the post on its way in but the Dundee United player scored from an area of the field that is usually vigorously monitored by Beram Kayal.

We’re going to miss that guy……

Agree – think Celtic implemented an EBT for Juninho but Brian Quinn put the kibosh on it going any further.

As you say though – the bottom line, they were/are more interested in winning than fairness.

Remember, Paul Le Guen (a manager with a very impressive European footballing CV) was ousted when Sir Minty Moonbeams sided with Barry Ferguson & Boydochenko. Second place was not an option.

  3. and on the huns game, the saint j centre half who rattles the ball of the bar, to let the huns score, what was he trying to do , seriously, how can he head the ball in that direction, from that position.

I’m happy my signing figures are broadly accurate – Lubo was £0.35m, Viduka £3.5m, Mjallby £1.2m. I’m sure Riseth was around the £0.5m mark. Maybe someone could provide the figure?

Dignity signed a shedload of players, and again I’m confident that the figure of £36m is close to the mark.

The point I’m making is that Fergus DID invest in the team that season, and significantly so. If we spend £3.5m on a striker this month, I’m sure we’ll all be doing cartwheels.

You simply can’t criticise Fergus’ investment and commitment that season when you put it in the context of what the Huns were embarking on.

Let’s not forget either that Celtic were the best-represented club in the world at the World Cup in France in June 1998, and virtually all of the players involved suffered fatigue, injury and loss of form in the first few months of that campaign. Marc Reiper’s career was ended a couple of weeks in. That on top of Wim walking out at the end of the previous season, leaving us with little time to get in a new manager.

It’s east to sit here now and suggest a wee bit more money spent that season would have won us the league, but it would not be true.

£36m was bet against us winning the league that year, and we know the game’s crooked to start with anyway.

  5. Sabre67 – as I said I dont care how unpopular the message is but we are not reinventing history.

I agree with a lot of what you have said – the support needed someone to galvanise behind – it was the support who bankrolled it all and made it a success. Fergus got £40M odd profit in the end (again I’m not criticising – but that was his reward for taking the risk). But the very people who made him the money were the ones he blythly let down. Thats why he got booed – not cause the daily record told us to.

Some of you really do have a dim view of your fellow supporters eh? I’ve news for you – without these people who you often have disgust for our club would amount to nothing.

The campaign to allow a phoenix hun team back in, has Darryl King as its main cheerleader. The nonsense he was spouting was embarrassing. He also said Rangers have not done anything criminal otherwise people would be going to jail.

Well lets see on that following the tribunal. If it seen as evasion and not avoidance, then criminal proceedings will follow.

Of course according to Traynor et al, we are seen as been blinded by hatred for demanding fairness!!!

StMichaelsBhoy – many Celtic supporters hold that view and Fergus did put his money where his mouth is. I am not sure you have your facts right on those signings.

Its never an all or nothing scenario – i am not suggesting we should have matched their spending regardless – I’ve never advocated that. But we could have done better and built on our success – we could have afforded that. But we didnt.

Could we afford it? I’m sure the final phase of stadium redevelopment was only completed that season at a cost of £5m or thereabouts. Our turnover at the time was about £28m.

We had just bought, whilst building a stadium, Reiper, Larsson, Burley, Brattbakk and Lambert for a considerable outlay.

    Orcs 98/99 signings:

    Numan £4.5m

    Amato £4.2m

    van Bronckhurst £5m

    Kancheskis £5.5m

    Charbonnier £1.2m

    Prodan £2.2m

    Hendry £4m

    Guivarch £3.5m

    McCann £2m

    Klos £750k

    Moore £1m

    Reyna £2m

    Cheers for that link.

There’s definitely something very dodgy about the Huns’ dealings in those years.

I remember an article on The Dog’s Bollix (fore-runner of e-Tims) from around 1998, regarding the £40m ENIC investment, and how ENIC were trying to rein in the spending. It suggested the Huns’ big-spending days were over, but somehow, Moonbeams was able to circumvent ENIC and continue as before. He eventually bought back their shares for £8m.

A journo later boasted that Moonbeams was brilliant at parting other people from their money. Might even have been that infamous Ken Gallacher article.

Due to Hearts policy of selling directly to Celtic supporters, they tend to be rarer than a handsome hun.

However, prior to the last game at Tynecastle there were plenty of tickets being sold outside the ground. You may wish to try that.

In any case you continue to miss my point – I’m not attempting to put this into context with the huns. We had more TV money etc in those days and could have easily afforded to do better – but Fergus refused. And just because you say spending more money would not have resulted in more success doesnt make it true – thats called defeatism

Thanks again! So that makes our spending in Fergus’ last season about £6m.

That was an ambitious, but not reckless spend and certainly gives the lie to, “Fergus let Celtic down.”

  23. Neganon2

I am 99% sure Jansen did not manage again. If we matched the huns spending at the time we would now be broke.

If you booed Fergus McCann and claim to be right in doing so I am not going to change your belief that he let us down.

I think you were wrong,I also think that many fans at that time were not as aware of a media agenda compared to now.

I agree to disagree but nothing personal. We most likely share the same hopes for our club but remember our history

  27. Neg Anon,

The boos that day were in the context of Bhoys Against Bigotry and Fergus’ attempts to dilute the IRA songbook. The papers took every opportunity to try and drive a wedge, but at the heart of the dissention was the message around the songbook.

That message was delivered by the mainstream media in their usual slanted manner, as we have seen in recent years with loose, twisted and disengenious reports. Fortunately we have the power of the internet to challenge that style of reporting, but it remains a challenge as we have witnessed with treatment of Neil Lennon, The Green Brigade and the Celtic support in general.

Fergus did not deserve boos that day, he should have been given the acclaim his involvement in Celtic’s recovery warranted. Nobody is re-writing history, but the plus column leaves the minus column significantly behind. That is the truth.
