Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

  1. Of course Celtic saying they are going to take their time over a new manager is sensible right?

Thank goodness there are no season defining games looming at in July.

And after all they wouldn’t have known Ronny was leaving until errrrr, errrr, emmmm. The last week or so, so they had no time to prepare a replacement.

And let’s face it. We can’t announce the new manager until after the ST renewal deadline.

After all we can’t shave the support second guessing the board now.

    Can we?

  2. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

If the board havent appointed the new manager by now.

There is a good chance they are waiting for someone.

    Roy Keane or Michael O’Neil?

Probably be Neil Lennon, who has clammed up recently after telling us he wants the job, and doesnt need a transfer budget.

That will tick all the boxes for PL.

Another yes man, and the same tired old strategy.

    Depressing.

Ronny’s fate was sealed withthe conclusion of the Europa League camaign this season.

I find it incongruous that the Leadership of the club have not moved to replace him until it was announced that he was leaving.

Succession planning in all key areas of the business is a prerequisite. We seem to have failed in thi regard.

The new manager ought to have been appointed (quietly) months ago, and been getting a head start on the job in the meantime.

Poor form. And unnecessary at that.

His own expectations probably exceeded those of the club.

Probably in a not expecting the world,Peter, but I don’t expect to be treated like something you scraped off your shoe kind of way.

So,Brendan turns us down, the club say that he was never really a genuine article, others do the same,wi similar retorts,we get left wi who?

And almost certainly after the end of the month,or even the financial year.

To give a balance to the article, I suppose the opposite polar to this is the “keep the blind faith” brigade, where no matter what happens or what is done to them or their club, they will wake up in the morning, content in the knowledge that they are a Celtic supporter.

Busy 2 weeks ahead for Celtic to which they can build upon 5IAR and lay the foundations to bring back the thunder ( copyright :Lenny). They can either chose to listen to some or all of the fools, that do not know any better, around them or decide that they themselves have been foolish in some of the strategy engaged on, both on and off the pitch and re-engage.

I just question the way the PLC conduct themselves in these kind of negotiations.

Most candidates will assume that Celtic want get back to a decent level, and be shocked when they find out that the PLC want to be successful….but without spending any money.

Not too sure what Di Matteo’s input into winning the CL would have been. Had a group of players who knew what it was all about. Record since then not too hot.

  8. FOLLOWING some speculation regarding the appointment of a new Celtic manager, the facts are as follows:(trans: anything in the press is nonsense)

The club has been and will be speaking to a number of candidates and we will take our time to go through this process thoroughly and in the proper manner. There is no ‘preferred’ candidate.(trans: we do have priority candidates but they don’t just get the job regardless of the interview and we won’t be announcing anything until it’s sealed and the other candidates informed)

We will continue this process with the aim of identifying a new manager who we believe will deliver success to the club. (trans: we’re not just going to jump into bed with the 1st guy that fits the bill)

Clearly we will not be able to provide daily updates on this issue. However, our supporters will be the first to know when a new manager has been appointed.(trans: the press will make up stories on a daily basis but the real news will be on here first)

  9. As the faithful gathered on the Celtic Way, the Celtic Conclave met behind closed doors to choose the next leader of the greatest club in the world.

The new head of the Holy C has a big job ahead reuniting the faithful torn apart by the Delia Out Schism, DOS, of the most recent season.

Lobby Dossers will need to be brought back into the fold before season ticket renewals.

Reporters, fans and various club staff were ushered from the board room when the head of the selection committee, PL uttered the historical order, “Extra omnes.”

East End Glasgow parlance which translates as “GTF.”

The chosen ones will be in conclave until white smoke is seen emanating from the ventilation ducts in Paul67’s famous North Stand bathroom and the bells ring out for Celtic.

  10. Reading between the lines is not always the way to go, but since it’s all we have who can blame us for speculating.

I reckon all the crap about DD being unhappy and will push for a change is just that, crap.

The policy will stay the same, there will be minimum spend on a manager, there will be no increase in spend on the playing staff and the scattergun policy of trying to unearth the diamond will continue to our detriment.

I honestly hope I am 100% wrong, but I doubt It.

  11. As I see it:

Rangers Retail Ltd are the sole owners of the right to make official RFC merchandise. However as of today they can no longer use the ‘official’ badges.

TRFC – can use the ‘official’ badges but are likely to run into difficulties making and selling merchandise.

If I was MASH, I’d come up with some new badges. Or simply re-brand all the stock with SEVCO and sell it for £1. That’d be a complete GIRFUY.

I have said for long enough that we need a few old heads in the squad, but not Carlton Cole types, ones who can actually play a bit :-)

As for the scouts, fair play to them for the VvD and VW of the world, but there have been far too many misses.

It’s not an easy job to balance things and keep everyone sort of happy, one of our biggest problems is that we are a PLC first and foremost, while we are only concerned about what is on the pitch, I fear our CEO is not keeping things in kilter.

Sporting success brings financial success. That’s the bottom line.

It increases commercial deals (which in my opinion is the root of PLs bonus). It increases fan engagement, which in turn increases merchandise and ticketing revenue. If that’s not the key definition of success for the board then they need a new dictionary.
